How Much Does Shipt Pay Shoppers? The Earnings Standard

Shipt pays shoppers a set amount per order offer, plus 100% of customer tips and any bonuses. Under its Earnings Standard, Shipt says every shopper in every city will earn at least 16 US dollars per hour for each offer, based on Shipt's own time and effort estimates. Pay can rise if the customer adds items.

Shipt is the delivery app owned by Target, and it does something none of the bigger delivery apps do on their public pages: it names an hourly floor for every offer, in every city. That makes it easier to judge than most. I've gone through Shipt's shopper pay pages to explain how that floor works, what it doesn't cover, and how quickly the money arrives.

Who runs Shipt

The company started in Birmingham, Alabama in 2014, founded by Bill Smith. Target announced it was buying the company on December 13, 2017, and Shipt now runs as a subsidiary of Target Corporation. As a shopper you pick up offers in the Shipt app, then shop and deliver each order yourself.

How Shipt sets pay for each order

Every order comes as an offer card with one estimated pay amount. That amount is based on Shipt's estimate of the time and effort the order will take: shopping, driving and handing it over. You see it before you accept, and you can pass on offers that don't look worth it.

Once you accept, the amount is fairly fixed. Shipt says pay can go up if the customer adds items to the order. It also says that if you take less time than estimated, it won't subtract pay, and if you take longer, it won't add any. So a quick, organised shopper keeps the full offer for less time, while a slow shop spreads the same money over more hours.

The Shipt Earnings Standard explained

This is the headline feature. Shipt says every shopper across all cities will earn at least 16 US dollars per hour for each offer. The important detail is how that hour is measured: it's based on Shipt's time and effort estimate for the order, not on the time you spend.

Shipt gives a formula so you can check any offer yourself: Offer Amount X 60 / Estimated Time = Pay Per Hour. Take the offer amount, multiply it by 60, and divide by the estimated minutes. If the answer comes out at or above the floor, the offer meets the standard. What the formula can't tell you is how long the store, parking or traffic will take you on the day.

Tips and bonuses on top of Shipt pay

Shipt says shoppers receive 100% of customer tips, and tips are paid out separately from order pay. Bonuses are extra earnings on top of offer pay, tied to requirements such as delivering on time. Shipt tells you the criteria and when the bonus will be paid, so read those details before chasing one.

When Shipt shoppers get paid

  • Weekly: direct deposit on Fridays for orders completed, and tips captured, from the previous Monday to Sunday.
  • Instant Payout: transfer available funds on demand 3 times per day. You'll need to agree to the Stripe Connect terms in the app and have at least one successful weekly payout from Shipt first.
  • Fallback: if you don't request an Instant Payout by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. CT, you'll get the normal Friday deposit.

Shipt's pay page doesn't mention a fee for Instant Payout, so check the app screen before you transfer.

Getting more from each Shipt offer

Because Shipt pays per offer rather than per minute, your speed decides how far the money stretches. A few habits help. Learn the layout of the stores you shop most, so you're not hunting for items. Group your shopping by aisle in the app before you start. Message the customer early about replacements rather than at the till. And look at the drive time on the card, not only the amount, because a long trip back home after the drop-off isn't part of Shipt's estimate.

It's also worth running the formula on every offer for your first week. You'll quickly spot the kinds of orders where Shipt's estimate is generous compared with how long they take you, and the ones where it isn't.

What Shipt pay doesn't cover

The hourly floor is about the offer, not your costs. Your car, fuel and parking are yours to pay for, and so is the time spent waiting between offers. Shipt also points out that taxes aren't taken out of your pay. It links shoppers to a tax information page, and for your own situation an accountant is the person to ask.

That's why I'd judge Shipt by what's left after a week, not by the floor on its own. Keep a note of the hours you're logged in, the miles you drive and what you receive, and you'll see your real hourly result quickly.

Shipt pay compared with other grocery apps

Shipt's approach differs from per-batch apps. Instacart, for example, sets batch pay from distance, items and expected shopping time, and adds boosts and heavy pay. Shipt names an hourly floor per offer instead. My guide to how Instacart pays shoppers walks through that model if you're choosing between the two.
