DoorDash pays Dashers base pay plus promotions plus 100% of tips. On Earn per Offer, DoorDash says base pay ranges from 2 to 10+ US dollars per offer depending on time, distance and how popular the order is. On Earn by Time you get a set minimum active hourly rate instead, with tips and promotions on top.
DoorDash is one of the few delivery apps that spells out a base pay range on its own help pages, which makes it easier to answer than most. I've pulled together what DoorDash says about Dasher pay, the two pay modes you can choose between, and what comes out before the money lands. It won't give you a promised hourly number, because DoorDash doesn't publish one, but you'll know exactly where your pay comes from.
The three parts of DoorDash Dasher pay
DoorDash splits every payment into three pieces: base pay, promotions and tips. Base pay is what DoorDash itself pays for the delivery. Promotions are extras it switches on when it needs more Dashers. Tips come from the customer. DoorDash is firm that the first two don't move with the third: the base pay and promotions you get will never vary based on the tip.
Earn per Offer vs Earn by Time on DoorDash
This choice is the biggest thing that sets DoorDash apart from the other delivery apps. You pick a mode before you start a dash, and it changes how base pay is worked out.
Earn per Offer
You're paid per offer you accept. DoorDash says base pay ranges from 2 to 10+ US dollars for each offer, depending on the estimated time, distance and desirability of the job. Offers that mean a longer drive, more time or a less popular restaurant carry a higher base. You see the offer before you take it, so you can turn down the ones that don't add up.
Earn by Time
Here you earn a set minimum hourly rate for the time you're actively on a delivery, with tips and promotions added on top. DoorDash doesn't publish that hourly rate on its pay page, so check it in the app for your area. One thing to know: DoorDash says tips may be less frequent when you dash in Earn by Time mode. That's worth testing over a few shifts before you settle on one mode. A simple way to compare is to note your total for a week in each mode, then divide by the hours you were out, including the waiting time between orders, which neither mode pays for directly.
DoorDash promotions that raise your pay
- Peak Pay: when it's switched on, select Dashers earn extra on each offer.
- Challenges: extra money for finishing a set number of deliveries.
- Delivery Streaks and Boosts: further incentives DoorDash lists alongside the first two.
These change by market and by hour, so the Dashers who do best tend to be the ones who check the app before deciding when to go out.
Tips on DoorDash orders and who keeps them
DoorDash says 100% of the tips it receives go to the Dasher, or Dashers, who fulfilled the order. A tip added after checkout shows up later in your earnings tab. Since base pay doesn't change with the tip, a generous customer simply adds to what you'd have earned anyway.
How DoorDash pays out Dasher earnings
You've got three options, and they differ on speed and fees:
- Weekly direct deposit: automatic and free. You're paid for the previous Monday to Sunday, and DoorDash says payments usually arrive by Wednesday night, with transfers taking 2-3 days to show.
- Fast Pay: once a day for a fee of 1.99 US dollars per transfer, and you need a debit card rather than a prepaid card.
- DoorDash Crimson: a personal banking account where earnings are deposited automatically after every dash with no fee.
What can reduce a DoorDash payout
Cash on Delivery orders catch some new Dashers out. If a customer pays you cash, DoorDash deducts that cash amount, minus the tip, from your next payout, because you've already got the money in your hand. It's not lost pay, but it can make a weekly deposit look smaller than you expected.

The bigger cost is the one DoorDash doesn't pay at all: running your own car or bike. Fuel, maintenance and insurance come out of your pocket, and you're responsible for tax on what you earn. DoorDash's pay page mentions keeping records through the year. For anything to do with tax on your own earnings, an accountant is the right person to ask.
Who can dash with DoorDash, and local pay rules
DoorDash says you need to be 18 or older, though the minimum age varies by state. Some cities also set their own rules on pay. In New York City, for example, restaurant and grocery delivery apps have to pay at least 22.13 US dollars per hour from the first pay period on or after April 1, 2026, set by the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.
