Does Facebook Have Dark Mode?

The short version: Yes, Facebook has dark mode, and it's been rolling out since 2020, but it works differently on the app versus the desktop site, and some people still cannot find the toggle because Facebook buries it in a different menu depending on your phone, your app version and sometimes which country you're in. I'll walk you through every version below.

Yes, dark mode exists, but Facebook makes it unnecessarily fiddly

I get why this question gets typed into Google so often. You'd think a company worth hundreds of billions of pounds could put a simple dark/light toggle somewhere obvious, like Instagram does, or like your phone's own settings do. Facebook doesn't. It splits dark mode across three different places depending on whether you're on the mobile app, the mobile browser, or desktop, and each one has its own quirks.

This is the bit most "how to" pages skip past: Facebook's dark mode isn't one feature, it's three separate implementations that Meta built at different times for different platforms, and they don't always talk to each other. Turn it on in your app and your desktop browser session can still be blinding white. That's not a bug you're imagining, it's just how Facebook built it.

How to turn on dark mode on the Facebook app (iPhone and Android)

  • Open the Facebook app and tap the three-line menu icon, usually top right.
  • Scroll down and tap Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
  • Scroll to Dark Mode (sometimes listed under "Preferences" depending on your app version).
  • Choose On, Off, or Match System Settings, which is the one I'd pick because it ties Facebook to whatever schedule your phone already uses.

If you've updated your app in the last year or two, you'll probably see it immediately. If you're on an older app version, it may not be there at all, which is worth checking before you assume your phone is broken.

How to turn on dark mode on Facebook.com (desktop)

  • Log into Facebook in a desktop browser.
  • Click your profile picture, top right.
  • Click Display & Accessibility.
  • Under Dark Mode, select On.

This one's simpler than the app, but it's been inconsistent in rollout. I've seen people on the same browser, same operating system, logged in from two different accounts, where one has the option and the other doesn't. Meta tests features on rolling percentages of users rather than switching everything on globally at once, which is standard practice for most large platforms, but it means two people comparing notes can be looking at different menus.

A worked example

Say you run a small marketing agency with four people on the team. Two of you use iPhones with the latest app, one uses an older Android handset that hasn't auto-updated in months, and one manages the business Page exclusively from a laptop. You'll likely get four different experiences: two phones with the toggle sitting neatly under Settings, one phone with no dark mode option visible at all until the app updates, and a desktop user who has to dig into Display & Accessibility separately because the phone settings don't carry over to browser sessions. If your team has ever argued about whether "Facebook dark mode doesn't work," this mismatch is usually why.

Why dark mode sometimes doesn't look right once you turn it on

This is the uncomfortable bit nobody likes admitting: dark mode on Facebook isn't finished, polished design across the whole platform. Some third-party embedded content, certain ad formats, and older Page templates still render with white backgrounds even when your main feed has gone dark, because Meta hasn't rebuilt every single element to respect the dark theme. You'll see this most on Pages with custom cover images or embedded forms, where the surrounding chrome goes dark but a chunk in the middle stays stubbornly white.

If you're managing a business Page rather than just scrolling your own feed, this matters more than it sounds. A Page that suddenly looks half-dark, half-white, or has sections that appear broken isn't necessarily a dark mode glitch, it can be a genuine display problem. If that's happening to you, it's worth reading why your Facebook Page might look black or broken before you assume it's just a theme setting, because the fix is often completely different.

Dark mode and battery life: the number that matters

People assume dark mode saves meaningful battery because that's the pitch everywhere. The truth is more specific: it only makes a real difference on phones with OLED or AMOLED screens, because those screens turn pixels fully off to show black, rather than just dimming them. On an OLED screen, studies by display researchers have found battery savings of roughly 15 to 30 percent at high brightness when switching an app's background from white to true black, depending on how much of the screen is dark content versus images and video. On an older LCD screen, the saving is close to zero, because LCDs light the whole panel regardless of what colour is being shown. So if you're on an iPhone SE or an older LCD Android, don't expect dark mode to meaningfully change your battery day. If you're on a newer flagship with OLED, it can.

What dark mode doesn't fix

A few things people assume dark mode will solve, and it won't:

  • Notifications still show previews in light backgrounds on the lock screen, depending on your phone's own settings, not Facebook's.
  • Messenger has its own separate dark mode toggle. Turning it on in Facebook doesn't automatically switch Messenger, and vice versa. Instagram works the same way, and if you also use Instagram DMs at night, it's worth knowing how to turn on dark mode for Instagram DMs separately, because that's a different setting entirely.
  • Ads and some embedded web content can still render in their original colours regardless of your theme choice, because advertisers control their own creative.

If dark mode still won't appear for you

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  • Update the app. Go to your app store, search Facebook, check for an update. This fixes the majority of "I don't have the option" cases.
  • Check whether you're using Facebook Lite instead of the full app. Lite has historically had fewer display options, including slower dark mode rollout.
  • Log out and back in. Sounds basic, but Meta's feature flags sometimes only refresh on a fresh session, and this is the same first step worth trying if your Facebook Page isn't loading in general, not just for dark mode.

If none of that works after a week, it's just a rollout timing issue on Meta's end, not something wrong with your account or device, and there's no setting buried deeper that will force it on.

A quick word for anyone managing a business Page

If you're the one running your company's Facebook presence alongside Instagram, it's worth remembering that display issues, disappearing content and broken-looking Pages get reported constantly, and dark mode confusion is just one small branch of a much bigger topic. If your Page has ever vanished from search or from your own admin view, that's a different and more serious issue worth reading about separately in why Facebook Pages sometimes disappear, because dark mode is cosmetic, but a disappearing Page is a business problem.

Frequently asked questions

Does Facebook have dark mode on iPhone?

Yes. Go to the menu icon, then Settings & Privacy, then Settings, then Dark Mode, and choose On or Match System Settings. If you don't see the option, update the app first.

Why doesn't my Facebook app have a dark mode option?

Usually it's an outdated app version, or you're using Facebook Lite rather than the full app, both of which have historically rolled out dark mode slower or not at all.

Does dark mode save battery on Facebook?

Only on phones with OLED or AMOLED screens, where it can save roughly 15 to 30 percent battery at high brightness. On LCD screens the saving is negligible because the whole panel stays lit regardless of colour.

Is Messenger dark mode the same as Facebook dark mode?

No, they're separate settings. Turning on dark mode in the main Facebook app or site does not switch Messenger automatically, and you'll need to toggle it inside Messenger itself.
