Xbox is the console most people think of as always online, so it surprises plenty of owners that it has a clear offline routine at all. It does, and it rests on two settings: your home Xbox, and offline mode. Get those right and your downloaded games keep going when the router doesn't.
I've built this page from Xbox Support and Xbox's own Game Pass pages. Microsoft's support site doesn't always make its detail easy to read, so where I couldn't confirm something on an official page, I've left it out and told you where to look.
What does making a console your home Xbox do?
Xbox Support says making a console your home Xbox gives friends and family access to your games and content when you're not signed in. The line that matters here: your home Xbox also lets you play your digital games offline.
You can only have one home Xbox at a time. Xbox Support also says you can change your home Xbox up to five times in any one-year period, so it's not something to flip back and forth every weekend.
To set it, Xbox Support gives this path: Settings, then General, then Personalization, then My home Xbox, then Make this my home Xbox. If you didn't choose to lock things down during setup, your console may already be your home Xbox, but it's worth checking.
How do I put my Xbox into offline mode?
Here's the routine I'd follow before a trip or a planned broadband switch, using the menu path from Xbox Support:
- While you're still connected, make sure the console has finished any system update and your profile is added. Xbox says you must be online to set up a console for the first time.
- Make this console your home Xbox: Settings, General, Personalization, My home Xbox.
- Install the games you want and let any updates finish.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then go to Profile and system, Settings, General, Network settings, Go offline.
- Start each game once to check it plays.
- When you're back online, go to the same Network settings screen and choose to go online again.
Xbox Support has one warning worth repeating. If you're offline because of an outage, whether that's your home network, your provider or the Xbox service itself, Microsoft recommends you don't set the console to offline. Leaving it set to online lets it reconnect automatically as soon as the service comes back.
Can Game Pass downloads run without Wi-Fi?
Here's what Xbox's own Game Pass pages confirm. Game Pass lets you download games to your Xbox console, PC and supported handhelds. Separately, cloud gaming lets you skip the download and stream games instead, and Xbox says cloud gaming requires internet.
So the first rule is simple: a game you're streaming will never work offline. Download it to the console if you want any chance of playing without a connection. For help choosing what to download first, see my guide to Game Pass games worth starting first.
The finer detail of how Game Pass titles behave offline over longer periods is covered in Microsoft's Game Pass FAQ on Xbox Support. I couldn't confirm that wording on Microsoft's page, so I'm not going to repeat the check-in periods you'll see quoted elsewhere. If you'll be offline for a long stretch, read that FAQ and reconnect before you go.
Do disc-based Xbox titles need installing first?
Yes. Xbox Support says that whether you buy a game on disc or download it from the Microsoft Store or Game Pass, you need to install it to your console's hard drive before you can play. So a disc isn't a shortcut around the prep. Install it and let it update while you're connected, like any other game.

Here's a summary of what each official page confirms:
| Setting or game type | What Xbox's own pages say |
|---|---|
| Home Xbox | Lets you play your digital games offline; one at a time |
| Changing home Xbox | Up to five times in any one-year period |
| Offline mode | Guide, Profile and system, Settings, General, Network settings, Go offline |
| First-time setup | Must be online to finish setup |
| Disc and downloaded games | Must be installed to the console drive before you play |
| Cloud gaming | Requires internet and a supported device |
What stops working on Xbox while you're disconnected?
Xbox Support's page on offline mode for Windows lists a couple of things that don't work offline: buying extra items from the Store, and leaderboards. Common sense covers the rest. Anything that needs other people, such as online multiplayer, parties and chat, needs a connection.
And if you want to play on your phone while you're away, that's cloud gaming, so it needs internet. My guide on playing Xbox games on your phone with cloud gaming explains how it works for when you're back on a decent signal.
Why does Xbox ask you to stay online during an outage?
It sounds backwards, but Microsoft's reasoning is practical. A console set to offline won't connect to any networks, so it won't notice when the service returns. Left online, it reconnects automatically. Offline mode is for when you've chosen to be offline, like a trip, not for riding out a short outage.
If you'd like the bigger picture on why some games want the internet and others don't, I've written a plain explainer on what offline games are.
