To unsend a message on Messenger, press and hold the message you sent, tap Remove and choose Unsend for everyone. On a computer, hover over it, click the three dots, then Remove. Remove for you only clears your own view. Menus vary by app version and there is a time limit, so check Meta's help centre.
Wrong chat, wrong person, wrong tone. Most of us have sent a Messenger message a second too soon and felt our stomach drop. The good news is that Messenger lets you take a message back, and the whole thing takes a few taps. The less good news is that unsending has limits, and it won't always save you. This guide covers how to unsend a message on Messenger, how it differs from removing a message only for yourself, and what to do when the option won't show up.
I've followed the way Meta describes removing messages in the Messenger help centre. Meta changes its menus and wording from time to time and rolls things out unevenly, so menus vary by app version, device and region. Where a detail depends on that, I say so rather than guess. If you're also tidying up your Messenger setup for work, my notes on Facebook Messenger hacks are a handy companion.
Unsend vs remove for you: what Messenger offers
When you hold down on a message you've sent, Messenger gives you a choice. These two options do very different things, and mixing them up is where most mistakes happen:
- Unsend for everyone. This takes the message out of the chat for you and for the people in it. It's the one you want when you've sent the wrong thing.
- Remove for you. This clears the message from your own view only. The other person still sees it.
- Neither option gives you a way to quietly pull a message after someone has read it and screenshotted it.
Meta's help page is the source for these two options, and wording on the button can differ slightly, for example Remove or Unsend. If you can see both choices, read each label carefully before you tap.
How to unsend a message on Messenger on your phone
On the Messenger app for iPhone or Android, the steps go like this:
- Open the chat that contains the message.
- Press and hold the message you sent until a menu appears.
- Tap Remove, or More and then Remove, depending on your version.
- Choose Unsend for everyone.
- Confirm if the app asks you to. The message should be replaced by a note that it was removed.
If you only see Remove for you, you may be outside the time Messenger allows for unsending, or the message may not be one you sent. I'll come back to that below.
How to unsend a Messenger message on a computer
You can also do it from Messenger on the web or the desktop app, and from Facebook's chat windows:
- Open the conversation.
- Hover over the message you sent. A row of small icons appears next to it.
- Click the three dots (More).
- Click Remove, then choose Unsend for everyone.
- Click Remove again if asked to confirm.
The layout is not identical everywhere, so if you can't find the three dots, hover slowly over the message itself rather than the empty space beside it.
What other people see after you unsend a message on Messenger
Unsending feels like rewinding time, but it isn't a perfect eraser. Here's what to expect:
- The message is taken out of the conversation for the people in it.
- A note may remain in the chat showing that a message was removed, so people may know something was there.
- A phone notification may already have shown part of the text before you unsent it.
- If someone read it first, or took a screenshot, unsending can't undo that.
- Copies you've shared elsewhere, such as a forwarded message, aren't affected.
If you need to know whether a deleted message can ever be recovered, I cover that in how to see deleted Messenger messages. The short version is that you shouldn't count on anything being retrievable, either way.
Why you can't unsend a message on Messenger
If the unsend option has vanished, check these in order:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Time limit. Messenger only lets you unsend for everyone for a limited time after sending. Meta's help centre sets out the current limit, so check it there.
- It wasn't your message. You can only unsend things you sent. You can remove other people's messages for yourself only.
- Old app version. Update Messenger from your app store and try again.
- Different chat type. Some chat types, such as encrypted chats or business conversations, may handle removal differently.
- A glitch. Close the app, reopen it and press and hold the message again.
If you're still stuck, use the Report a problem option inside Messenger so Meta can look at it.
Unsending a Messenger message in a business chat
Customers message businesses on Messenger constantly, so this isn't only a personal skill. A rushed reply with a typo, a wrong order detail or the wrong customer's name can cause real confusion. A calm approach helps.
- Unsend the message as soon as you spot the mistake.
- Follow up with a short, correct message. "Apologies, I sent that to the wrong chat" is enough.
- Don't repeat private details when you apologise.
- If the message contained sensitive information, tell your team and check your page's settings.
- Use saved replies for common answers so there's less to get wrong.
If you run a Page, my guide to Messenger tricks for business Pages covers more ways to keep customer chats tidy. And if images and GIFs are part of your replies, posting GIFs and images in Messenger business chats shows how to keep it professional.
Keeping your Messenger account tidy after you unsend
Once the panic passes, it's worth thinking about habits. Slow down before you hit send, especially on messages containing addresses, order details or opinions about other people. Check the name at the top of the chat. And keep your account itself safe, because a hijacked account can send things you never wrote. My straight-talking guide to keeping your Messenger account secure is worth ten minutes.
| Option | Who it affects | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Unsend for everyone | You and the people in the chat | Sending the wrong message |
| Remove for you | Only you | Tidying your own view |
| Report a problem | Meta support | When the option won't appear |

Frequently asked questions
How do I unsend a message on Messenger?
Press and hold the message you sent, tap Remove (sometimes under More) and choose Unsend for everyone. On a computer, hover over the message, click the three dots and then Remove.
What is the difference between unsend and remove for you?
Unsend for everyone takes the message out of the chat for everyone in it. Remove for you only clears it from your own view, so the other person can still read it.
Will the other person know I unsent a message?
A note may stay in the chat to show a message was removed. They may also have seen a notification or read the text before you unsent it.
Why can't I unsend a message on Messenger?
There is a time limit for unsending, you can only unsend messages you sent, and menus vary by app version. Update the app and check Meta's help centre for the current rules.
Can I unsend a message that someone has already read?
You may still be able to remove it if you're within the time limit, but they have already seen it. Unsending can't undo a read message or a screenshot.
