To create an event on Facebook, open Events from the menu, tap Create, choose online or in person, add the name, date, time and details, then tap Create event. For a Page or group, start from the Page or group instead. Check the privacy setting before you publish, because it decides who can find the event.
Facebook events are one of the easiest ways to get people to turn up to something, whether it's a birthday drinks, a school fair, a workshop or a launch for your business. Everyone who responds gets reminders, and the event page holds the time, place and details in one spot. I use them for webinars and in-person talks, and the setup takes a few minutes once you know where to start.
There are three places you can create an event from: your own profile, a Page you manage, or a group. Facebook's Help Centre has a separate article for each, and this guide follows them. Menus vary by app version, so a label on your screen might be worded a little differently.
Create a Facebook event from your profile
In the Facebook app
- Tap the menu (your profile picture or the three lines).
- Tap Events. If you can't see it, tap See more first.
- Tap Create or the plus sign.
- Choose whether the event is online or in person.
- Add the event name, start date and time, and an end time if you want one.
- Choose who can see it, add a location or link and write a description.
- Tap Create event.
On a computer
- Click Events in the left-hand menu of your Feed.
- Click Create new event.
- Fill in the name, date, time and privacy, then choose online or in person.
- Add the details and a cover image.
- Click Create event.
Create an event for your Facebook Page
Facebook's article Create an event for your Facebook Page starts from the Page itself. Switch into the Page first, then:
- Go to the Page and open the Events section (it can sit under More on the Page).
- Click or tap Create new event.
- Choose online or in person and fill in the details.
- Add co-hosts if another Page or person is running it with you.
- Publish the event.
Facebook's business help pages say you need a role on the Page that allows you to create events. If the option's missing, ask whoever has full control of the Page to check your access. Not set up yet? Here's how to create a Facebook business Page first.
Create an event inside a Facebook group
Events in a group are ideal for members-only meetups or community sessions, because they're shown to the group rather than to the world.
- Open the group.
- Tap More or the three dots, or look for Events in the group's menu.
- Tap Create event.
- Choose online or in person and add the details.
- Publish it, and members will see it in the group.
If you can't find the option, the admin may have limited who can create events. Group admins control this in the group's settings. Not sure whether your community belongs in a group or on a Page? I've explained the difference between Facebook Pages and groups.
Online or in person: which Facebook event type to pick
| Event type | What you add | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| In person | An address or place, date and time | Shop events, meetups, workshops, parties |
| Online with Facebook Live | Nothing extra, it streams on Facebook | Talks, Q and A sessions, launches |
| Online with an external link | A link to your video call or webinar | Webinars and classes on another platform |
For a Page, Facebook's business help article on online events says you open the Page, go to Events, choose Online under Create event and then pick Facebook Live. When the time comes, you go live into the event. I've written up how to go live on Facebook from a phone or computer if that's your plan.

Facebook event settings worth checking before you publish
- Privacy. Profile events offer choices such as public, friends or private, and group events are tied to the group. The options you see depend on where you create the event, so read them before you publish, because they decide who can find and share it.
- Co-hosts. Adding a co-host lets another person or Page help manage and promote the event.
- Guests inviting friends. Decide whether guests can invite other people.
- Repeat dates. Facebook's business help pages describe recurring events, so a weekly class can be set up once.
- Cover image. Use a clear image with no tiny text, because it's shown at different sizes.
Editing a Facebook event after it's created
Facebook has a help article called Edit your Facebook event. Open the event and look for Edit, usually under the three dots or next to the event name. You can change the time, description, cover and most details. If you move the date, add a post to the event explaining why, so nobody turns up at the old time. If plans fall through, look in the same menu for the option to cancel the event.
If you can't create an event on Facebook
- Update the app. Events moves around between versions.
- Check you're in the right place. A Page event needs you to switch into the Page first.
- Ask the group admin if group events are switched off for members.
- Ask the person with full control of a Page to confirm your access.
- Try a computer if the phone app won't show the option.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create a private event on Facebook?
Yes, from your profile. Choose Private as the privacy option when you set it up. Events created from a Page or group follow different privacy choices.
Can I create an online event on Facebook?
Yes. Choose Online when you create the event, then pick Facebook Live or add an external link.
Who can create an event in a Facebook group?
Members can usually create group events, but admins can limit this in the group's settings.
Can I add a co-host to my Facebook event?
Yes. Co-hosts can help manage and promote the event. Add them in the event settings while you create it or when you edit it.
Can I set up a weekly event on Facebook?
Facebook's business help pages describe recurring events, so you can set the pattern once instead of creating each date separately.
