How to Get Voice Chat on Roblox: Age Check, Settings and Fixes

To get voice chat on Roblox, you need to be 13 or older and complete Roblox's age check in the app, then turn voice chat on in your privacy or communication settings and allow microphone access on your device. The game you're playing must also support voice. Roblox has changed these rules several times, so check its own help article on voice chat for the latest.

Voice chat lets you talk to other players in a game instead of typing. It's not switched on for everyone by default, and that surprises a lot of people. The good news is that the steps are short, as long as you meet the requirements.

Check you're eligible first

Run through this checklist before you touch any settings. If you can't tick every box, the later steps won't help.

  • You're 13 or older. Voice chat is for users aged 13 and over.
  • You've completed the age check. Roblox asks you to confirm your age in the app, either with a selfie for facial age estimation or by verifying with an ID.
  • Your account details are accurate. Use your real age and your own ID, never someone else's.
  • Your device has a working microphone. Phones, tablets and most laptops have one built in.
  • The game supports voice. Not every experience on Roblox has it.

Please don't try to get round the age check by entering a false age or using someone else's ID. It breaks Roblox's rules, and the checks exist to keep younger players safe. If you're under 13, voice chat isn't available to you yet, and that's fine. Text chat and the games themselves are still there.

Step 1: complete the age check

  1. Open Roblox and sign in to your account.
  2. Open Settings, then Account Info.
  3. Look for the age check option and tap it.
  4. Follow the prompts. Roblox may ask you to take a selfie so it can estimate your age, or to verify with an ID.
  5. Wait for the confirmation. It can take a short while to come through.

Menus change often. If you can't find the age check, search the Roblox settings for the word age and look for any prompt on the home screen.

Step 2: turn voice chat on

  1. Go back to Settings.
  2. Open Privacy, or the Communication section if your version uses that name.
  3. Find the Voice or Enable voice chat switch and turn it on.
  4. Save any changes if the app asks you to.

If you can't see the switch at all, the age check usually hasn't finished, or your account isn't eligible at the moment.

Step 3: allow your microphone

Roblox can't hear you until your device says it may use the microphone. On a phone or tablet, open your device settings, find Roblox in the app list and allow microphone access. On a computer, your system will normally ask the first time you join a voice game, so choose Allow. If you said no by mistake, go back into your system's privacy settings and change it.

Step 4: join a game with voice

Voice chat only works in games where the creator has turned it on. When you're in one, look for a small microphone icon above your avatar's head. Tap it to mute or unmute yourself. Other players who also have voice chat will see the same icon above their characters.

If you're not sure where to play, plenty of group-friendly games work well with voice. My list of co-op horror games is a good place to start if you like playing with friends.

A section for parents

If you're a parent, you've got control over how your child uses chat and voice. Roblox provides Parental Controls in the Settings menu, and you can link your own parent account to your child's to manage things from your side. From there you can look at the communication options and decide what's switched on.

  • Talk with your child about who they play with and what to do if someone makes them uncomfortable.
  • Show them how to mute, block and report other players in the app.
  • Review the settings together every so often, since Roblox updates them.
  • Check Roblox's own help pages for the latest guidance on parental controls and voice chat.

I'd treat voice chat as something a family agrees on together, not a setting to hide. Children are usually more open when they know the rules and have helped to set them.

Playing safely with voice

Voice makes a game feel friendlier, but it also means you can hear strangers. A few habits help everyone stay comfortable.

  • Mute yourself when you aren't speaking, so background noise and private conversations stay private.
  • Never share your full name, address, school, phone number or passwords with someone you've met in a game.
  • Use the mute, block and report tools if somebody is rude or makes you uncomfortable. You don't need to explain yourself.
  • Leave a game if the voice chat in it doesn't feel right. There are plenty of others.

Troubleshooting: voice chat isn't working

I can't see the voice chat option

Make sure you're 13 or over and have finished the age check. Update the Roblox app too, because new settings only appear in recent versions.

The microphone icon is missing in the game

The game may not support voice. Try a different experience to test. Also check that voice chat is switched on in your settings.

People can't hear me

  1. Check you aren't muted. Tap the microphone icon above your avatar.
  2. Check your device volume and that no other app is using the microphone.
  3. Allow microphone access for Roblox in your device settings.
  4. If you're using a headset, make sure it's connected and selected as the input.

I'm playing on a laptop or Chromebook

Voice works the same way, but your laptop needs a working microphone and permission to use it. If you're on a school or work device, there may be restrictions. My guide to playing Roblox on a Chromebook covers the main hurdles, and if your mouse is the problem, there's help for playing Roblox on a laptop without a mouse.

Since Roblox has changed its voice chat rules more than once, I'd always check its help article on voice chat before you spend time troubleshooting. It's the one place that will always match the current version of the app.
