You can get free green screen footage from free stock video libraries and a few subscription sites that offer some clips without a plan. Licences vary by site and by clip, and some ask for a credit. This page lists eight options in no particular order, then explains the licence checks and how to remove the green.

Green screen footage is one of the quickest ways to make a simple video look more polished. A subscribe button that pops in, a phone screen showing your app, a puff of smoke or a news-style frame can all be dropped over your own footage in a few clicks. You don't need a studio or a motion designer, just the right clip and a basic editor.
Free green screen clips come from two places: free stock libraries that let anyone download, and subscription libraries that offer a handful of free files or let you browse before you sign up. Licences differ from site to site and sometimes from clip to clip, so I've listed eight places to look, a mix of large libraries and smaller sites, with the checks to make before you publish.

In the Free plan column, Yes means the site's own pages say you can download at least some green screen clips without a subscription. No means you'll need a plan to download clean files. Either way, check the licence on each clip before you use it.

What should you check before you use free green screen videos?
A free download isn't the same as free to use anywhere. Before a clip goes into a client video, an ad or a monetised channel, run through these checks.
- The licence for that exact clip. Some sites use one licence for everything. Others label each clip differently, such as standard, creative commons or editorial only.
- Attribution. Some free licences need a credit to the creator in your description or end card. Others say a credit is welcome but not required.
- Commercial use. Most free stock sites allow it, but some limit it, especially for products you sell or for printed items.
- People and brands in the clip. A recognisable face, logo or product may need extra permission, and you shouldn't imply that a person or brand endorses you.
- Resolution and frame rate. Match the clip to your project so it doesn't look soft or stutter next to your own footage.
- A record of the download. Save the page link and licence wording with the date, in case a platform ever queries it.
How do you remove a green screen background in a video editor?
The effect you're after is called chroma key. Almost every modern video editor has it, including free desktop editors and phone apps. The steps are much the same everywhere.
- Put your main footage on the bottom track of the timeline.
- Drag the green screen clip onto a track above it.
- Select the top clip and find the chroma key, green screen or remove colour option.
- Pick the green with the colour picker tool, then adjust strength or tolerance until the green disappears.
- Soften the edges slightly and reduce any green tint left around hair or objects.
- Resize, move and time the clip, then preview at full screen before you export.
If your editor doesn't have chroma key, or it struggles with fine edges, my guide to picking video editing software explains what to look for.
Which green screen clips work well for business videos?
- Subscribe, follow and like buttons for YouTube videos and Shorts.
- Phone, tablet and laptop screens where you can place a product demo or website walkthrough.
- Lower-third name bars and simple news-style frames for interviews.
- Transitions such as smoke, ink, light leaks or paper tears between sections.
- Arrows, circles and highlight effects for tutorials.
- Weather, sparkle and confetti overlays for announcements and launches.
If you're running a channel without showing your face, green screen overlays and stock clips do a lot of the heavy lifting. I've collected faceless YouTube channel ideas that suit this style. For general cutaway shots rather than overlays, see where to get free B-roll for YouTube.
Why do some free green screen clips look bad once keyed?
Not every free clip is made with the same care. These are the usual problems and what they tell you.
- Patchy green. Uneven lighting leaves light and dark patches, so the key leaves blotches. Choose clips with a flat, even green.
- Green spill. A green glow around edges is hard to clean. Look for clean outlines in the preview.
- Low resolution. Small files look soft when scaled. Download the largest size your project can handle.
- Compression blocks. Heavily compressed clips break up at the edges once keyed.
- Hidden watermarks. Some previews carry a faint mark. Check the downloaded file, not just the thumbnail.
Do you make green screen footage or a stock video library? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
Final checks before you add green screen footage to a video
Download a clip, key it in your editor and watch the result at full screen before you commit. If it looks clean, save the licence wording with the file, add any credit the licence asks for, and keep a folder of clips that worked so your next video is faster to make.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I download free green screen videos?
Free stock video sites and some subscription libraries offer green screen clips you can download without a plan. This page lists eight places to look, in no particular order.
Can I use free green screen footage on YouTube?
Usually yes, if the clip's licence allows commercial use. Some free licences ask for a credit in your description, so read the licence for each clip before you publish.
Do I need to credit free green screen clips?
It depends on the site and sometimes on the clip. Some licences don't need attribution, while others are free only if you credit the creator.
How do I remove the green background from a clip?
Use the chroma key or green screen effect in your video editor. Place the clip above your footage, pick the green and adjust the strength until it disappears.
Why does my green screen leave a green outline?
That's called green spill. Soften the edges, use the spill or despill control if your editor has one, and pick clips with clean, evenly lit green.
