Free Readability Checker: Flesch Reading Ease Score in Seconds

A readability checker scores how easy your writing is to read. Paste your text and this free tool gives you the Flesch Reading Ease score, the reading grade level, and your word and sentence stats in seconds. It runs in your browser, stores nothing, and works on emails, blog posts, landing pages or any copy.

How to read your score

The Flesch Reading Ease score runs from 0 to 100, and higher is easier. Most successful web copy sits between 60 and 70, which reads at roughly an 8th to 9th grade level and feels effortless to a general audience. If your score is low, the tool tells you why: usually long sentences, long words, or both. The reading grade level is the other side of the same coin, the school grade a reader needs to follow your text comfortably. For business writing, a grade level of 8 or 9 is the sweet spot.

Why easy reading wins

Clear writing is not dumbing down. It respects the reader who is busy, skimming, and one tab away from leaving. Shorter sentences and plainer words keep people reading, and the same qualities make your writing easy for AI answer engines to quote and cite. If you want your content to be read and to rank, readable beats clever every time.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good readability score?

For web copy, aim for a Flesch Reading Ease of 60 or higher, which lands around an 8th to 9th grade reading level. That is where most general audiences read comfortably. Technical or academic writing sits lower, and that is fine when the reader expects it.

What is Flesch Reading Ease?

It is a formula that scores text from 0 to 100 based on how long your sentences are and how many syllables your words have. Higher means easier. It was designed by Rudolf Flesch and is one of the most widely used readability measures in the world.

How can I make my writing more readable?

Shorten your sentences, aim for 15 to 20 words each, cut the long words when a short one will do, use everyday language, and break big blocks of text into shorter paragraphs. Read it out loud: anywhere you run out of breath is a sentence to split.

Does this readability checker use AI or store my text?

No. It runs entirely in your browser and calculates the scores from your text on the spot, so nothing is sent anywhere or saved. You can paste sensitive drafts without worry.

Why does readability matter for SEO?

Clear writing keeps people on the page longer and answers their question faster, which both help search rankings. It also makes your content easier for AI answer engines to quote, because short, direct sentences are simpler to lift and cite.
