Free Instagram Username Generator: 30 Handle Ideas From Your Name or Niche

An Instagram username generator combines your name or brand with your niche, a short suffix and Instagram-safe punctuation to produce handle ideas that are short, readable and more likely to be free. Type a name and a keyword below and copy the ones you like; then check each one in the Instagram app before you commit.

What makes a good Instagram username

Short, sayable and spellable after hearing it once. Two words joined by a full stop or underscore read better than three words run together, numbers look like a fallback unless they mean something, and the closer the handle is to the name people will search, the more of them will find you. If your first choice is taken, add your niche rather than a random number: maya.bakes beats maya2847 every time.

Rules Instagram enforces

Usernames can be up to 30 characters and can only contain letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. They cannot end in a full stop, cannot contain two full stops in a row, and are not case sensitive. You can change your username later, but every link you have shared breaks when you do, so pick one you can keep.

Once you have the handle, style your display name with the Instagram font generator, write the bio with the Instagram bio generator and read what an Instagram handle is and how to choose one. Every Instagram guide is indexed on the Instagram help page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Instagram username generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up and stores nothing. Generate as many sets as you like.

Does it check whether a username is available?

No tool can do that reliably without Instagram's own search, and Instagram does not offer a public availability API. Copy your favourites and try them in the app's Edit profile screen; it tells you instantly if a handle is taken.

What characters are allowed in an Instagram username?

Letters, numbers, full stops and underscores only, up to 30 characters, no spaces, and it cannot end with a full stop.

Should I use my real name or my niche?

If you are the brand, use your name and add the niche only if the name is taken. If you are building a themed account, lead with the niche so the handle tells people what they get before they tap.

Can I change my Instagram username later?

Yes, from Edit profile, and the old one becomes available to others after a short hold. Links in bios, printed material and older posts will break, so change it early or not at all.
