The short version: if WhatsApp is showing phone numbers instead of names, it's almost always because WhatsApp doesn't have permission to read your phone contacts, or the number wasn't saved with the correct country code. Fix the contacts permission first, then re-sync, and the names come back within a minute or two.
What's really happening
WhatsApp doesn't store its own address book. It reads the names straight out of your phone's contacts app and matches them to numbers. When a name goes missing and a raw number shows up instead, one of three things has broken that link: WhatsApp can't see your contacts at all, the saved number doesn't match the format WhatsApp expects, or the sync between your phone and WhatsApp hasn't run recently.
This is annoying rather than serious. Your messages are still there, your chats are still in order, and nothing has been deleted. It's a display problem, not a data problem, which is good news because it means there's almost always a simple fix. I've seen this on both iPhone and Android, and it's rarely caused by anything you've done wrong. Usually it follows a phone update, a WhatsApp update, or a phone restore.
The three most common causes
1. Contacts permission is off
This is the number one cause by a distance. At some point, either during setup or after a phone update, WhatsApp lost permission to access your contacts. Without that permission it has no address book to check against, so every chat just shows the raw number. This tends to reset itself silently after a big operating system update, which is why it can feel like it's come from nowhere.
2. The number was saved without a country code
If a contact was saved as a local number, for example starting with a 0 instead of +44, WhatsApp sometimes can't match it to the international format it uses internally. The contact exists, the number is right, but the two versions don't line up cleanly. This is especially common with older contacts that were added years ago, before you or the other person had an international number saved correctly.
3. Contact sync is switched off or stuck
Android in particular has a separate toggle for syncing contacts inside WhatsApp itself, on top of the general phone permission. If that toggle is off, or the sync job is stuck after a poor connection, new or edited contacts won't show even though older ones still display fine. This is the trickiest cause to spot because everything looks set up correctly on the surface, it's just not running.
Fixes to try, in order
- Check and turn on the contacts permission. On iPhone: go to Settings, scroll down to WhatsApp, and make sure Contacts is switched on. On Android: go to Settings, then Apps, then WhatsApp, then Permissions, and turn on Contacts. If the toggle was already on, turn it off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. This forces WhatsApp to re-request the list rather than relying on a stale read. If names still don't appear after this, move to the next step rather than repeating it.
- Force close and reopen WhatsApp. On iPhone: swipe up from the bottom and hold, find WhatsApp in the app switcher, and swipe it away, then reopen from the home screen. On Android: go to Settings, then Apps, then WhatsApp, then tap Force Stop, then reopen it. This clears whatever the app was holding in memory and makes it re-read the contacts list fresh. If it still shows numbers, the problem is more likely the saved contact format than the app state, so go to step three.
- Fix the number format in your phone's contacts app, not WhatsApp. Open the contact directly in Contacts (iPhone) or the Contacts or Google Contacts app (Android), and check the number includes the country code with a plus sign, for example +447700900000 rather than 07700900000. Save the change, then reopen WhatsApp. If the name still doesn't show, the contact may be saved on a different account than the one syncing to your phone, so check step four.
- Check which account the contact is saved under. On Android especially, contacts can be saved to your phone's local storage, your Google account, or a SIM card, and WhatsApp may only be syncing one of those. Open the contact and check where it's saved, and if it's on the SIM, move it to your Google account or phone storage instead. On iPhone, check whether the contact is under iCloud or under a work or school account with restricted sync. If moving the contact doesn't help within a minute, restart the phone before trying anything else.
- Restart your phone. This sounds basic but it clears background processes that get stuck holding an old version of your contacts cache, which is a truly common cause after a phone update. Turn the phone fully off, wait ten seconds, then turn it back on and open WhatsApp. If names are still missing after a full restart, you're likely dealing with a WhatsApp update bug rather than a settings problem.
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version. On iPhone: open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and check for a WhatsApp update. On Android: open the Play Store, search WhatsApp, and check for an update. Older versions occasionally have contact-matching bugs that get fixed in the next release. If you're already on the latest version and names still won't show for specific contacts only, it's worth reinstalling WhatsApp as a last resort, since your chat history backs up automatically and will restore on reinstall.
A quick way to check it's really fixed
Once you've made a change, don't just glance at your recent chats list, because WhatsApp can take a minute to refresh names across the whole app even after the underlying fix has worked. Instead, open a chat with a contact you know is affected, tap their name at the top to open the contact info screen, and check whether the correct name shows there. If it does, back out and the main chat list should catch up within a minute or two. If the info screen still shows a raw number, the fix hasn't taken yet and you should move to the next step on the list above.
What to do if only some contacts are affected
If most of your contacts show names fine and it's only a handful missing, don't bother with the full reset above. It's almost always one of two things: those specific contacts were saved recently and haven't synced yet, or they were saved with a typo in the number. Open each one in your contacts app, check the number carefully against what's really saved in WhatsApp under that chat's info screen, and correct anything that doesn't match exactly, including spaces and the country code.
If you've recently restored your phone from a backup, give it a few hours. Contact sync after a full phone restore can take longer than you'd expect, especially if you have a large contacts list, and WhatsApp will usually catch up on its own without you needing to touch a setting.
When it's not a permissions problem at all
Occasionally the issue isn't your contacts at all but a group chat, where WhatsApp shows the name someone set for themselves in their own profile rather than the name you saved them under, if you haven't saved them as a contact. That's expected behaviour, not a fault. Save their number as a contact and the name you chose will take over in your view.
It's also worth ruling out that the other person has simply changed their number, which will show as a new, unnamed contact until you update it in your address book. If a regular contact suddenly shows as an unfamiliar number, check with them through another channel before assuming it's a display bug.

Frequently asked questions
Will fixing this delete any of my chat history?
No. Everything above only touches how WhatsApp reads your contacts, not your messages or chat backups. Your conversations stay exactly where they are throughout.
Why did this start happening out of nowhere?
The most common trigger is a phone software update resetting app permissions, or a WhatsApp update changing how it reads the contacts list. Neither is something you did wrong.
Does this affect the other person too, or just my view?
It only affects your view. Contact names are stored locally on each device, so the other person sees whatever name they've saved you under, regardless of what's showing on your screen.
I saved the contact correctly and it still shows a number. What now?
Try removing the contact from your phone entirely, restarting the phone, then re-adding it fresh with the full country code. A clean re-add clears any corrupted link between the old entry and WhatsApp's cache.
Does this happen on WhatsApp Web or Desktop too?
Yes, because WhatsApp Web and Desktop mirror your phone's contacts rather than holding their own copy. Fix the contact on your phone first, and the correct name will appear on Web and Desktop once your phone reconnects and syncs.
