How to Screen Share on Discord (and Stream With Go Live)

To screen share on Discord, join a voice channel or call, select the streaming icon in the voice status panel, choose a window or your whole screen, then click Go Live. Streaming on Discord uses the same Go Live button. If the icon's missing in a server, your role or that channel doesn't have the Video permission.

Showing beats telling. When I'm walking a client through a dashboard or helping a community member find a setting, sharing my screen saves ten minutes of back-and-forth messages. Discord makes this easy once you know that screen sharing and streaming are the same feature, called Go Live.

Below you'll find the desktop and phone steps, how to stream a game, what decides your quality, and what to check when the button won't appear. It's all based on Discord's own Go Live and Mobile Screenshare help articles.

Screen share on Discord from a computer

On the desktop app, Discord's help describes it like this:

  1. Join a voice channel in a server where you have permission to screen share, or start a voice call in a DM.
  2. Look at the voice status panel at the bottom left of the app and select the streaming icon, the small screen with an arrow.
  3. Choose what to share: a single application window or your entire screen.
  4. Check the options, such as stream preview, then click Go Live.

Other people in that voice channel can now click your stream to watch it. To stop, use the streaming controls in the same panel; the exact button wording varies a little by app version.

How to stream on Discord with Go Live

People search for streaming and screen sharing as if they were two different things, but on Discord they're one tool. Go Live lets you share any application window or your entire screen in a server or voice call. Discord says up to 50 people can share their video or screen at a time in a voice chat, so a whole group can take turns.

To stream a game, Discord needs to recognise it through its built-in game detection. If your game doesn't appear, Discord suggests adding it manually under User Settings, then Game Activity, then Add it. Discord's help is honest that if a game isn't recognised by detection or by adding it manually, you won't be able to stream it as a game. In that case, sharing the window or whole screen is the workaround.

Screen share on Discord from your phone

Discord's Mobile Screenshare FAQ says you can share your screen from your phone any time you're in voice, whether that's a DM, a group DM or a server voice channel.

  1. Join the voice channel or call.
  2. In a voice-only call, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the call controls and tap Screenshare. In a video call, the screenshare icon sits in the bottom row of controls.
  3. Your phone shows a system message asking if you're ready to start sharing. Confirm it.
  4. To stop, return to Discord and use the same call controls. Menus vary by app version.

Two catches from Discord's FAQ. Certain streaming apps, including Netflix and Spotify, don't allow screenshare or audioshare because of their own restrictions, so you'll see a blank screen or hear nothing. And the feature needs a reasonably recent phone operating system, so update your phone if the option is missing.

Discord screen share quality and stream preview settings

According to Discord's help, all users can stream at up to 720p/30fps. Nitro users can stream at up to 4k/60fps on desktop, and Discord's mobile FAQ says Nitro users on iOS can stream in HD at up to 1080p/60fps. For a slideshow or a spreadsheet, the standard quality is usually fine.

When you start sharing, you'll see a Hide stream preview option. It controls whether people in the channel see a little preview of your stream before they join it. If you're sharing anything personal, such as an inbox or a client file, I'd tick it and be careful which window you pick. You can also switch previews off for every stream in Voice and Video settings.

Why the Discord screen share button is missing

Discord's help says the ability to share your screen in a voice channel is on by default, but it sits behind the Video permission. Server owners and admins can switch that permission off for a role or a specific channel. If you can't see the streaming icon in a server, it's very likely that channel or your role doesn't have Video turned on.

  • Try a different voice channel in the same server, or a DM call, to see if the option appears there.
  • Ask a moderator whether your role has the Video permission in that channel.
  • On a phone, make sure you confirmed the system message that asks if you're ready to start sharing.
  • On Windows, Discord has a separate help article about capturing application windows, which is worth reading if a window shows up black.

Using Discord screen sharing for a community or small business

If you run a server for customers, students or members, screen sharing turns Discord into a light webinar tool. A few habits help:

  • Set up a dedicated voice channel for demos and give the Video permission only to the roles that should present.
  • Close notifications and private tabs before you click Go Live, or share one window rather than your whole screen.
  • Tick Hide stream preview for anything sensitive, so nobody glimpses it before they join.

If you'd like attendees to keep watching after the session, a playlist works better than a live stream. My guide on how to share a YouTube playlist shows how to send a whole set of videos in one link. And if you only need to pass on a short clip instead of streaming, my walkthrough on copying a link from a Facebook Reel to share is quicker.

Stage channels and Go Live on Discord

Stage channels work a little differently from normal voice channels. Discord's Stage FAQ says moderators, server admins and speakers with the right permission can Go Live with one stream at a time, and up to five people on stage can turn on their cameras. If you host talks or AMAs, that's useful to know before you plan a panel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I screen share on Discord?

Join a voice channel or call, select the streaming icon in the voice status panel, choose a window or your whole screen, then click Go Live. On a phone, open the call controls and tap Screenshare.

How do I stream on Discord?

Streaming and screen sharing are the same feature, called Go Live. To stream a game, Discord must recognise it, and you can add it manually under User Settings, then Game Activity.

Why can't I screen share in a Discord server?

Screen sharing is linked to the Video permission. If an admin has turned it off for your role or the channel, the option won't appear.

Can I screen share on Discord from my phone?

Yes. Discord says you can share your screen from a phone in DMs, group DMs and server voice channels, though some apps such as Netflix and Spotify block it.

Can people see my screen before they join?

They can see a preview unless you tick Hide stream preview when you start, or switch previews off in Voice and Video settings.
