To change your Snapchat password, open My Account, tap the gear icon to open Settings, tap Password and follow the on-screen directions. If you've forgotten the current one, use Forgot your password? on the login screen instead, and remember Snapchat can only reset it through the email or phone number on your account.
A fresh password is one of the easiest ways to protect a Snapchat account, whether it holds years of Memories or the Snaps you use to talk to customers. I'd change it straight away if you've ever reused it elsewhere, shared it with someone, or logged in on a friend's phone and forgotten to log out.
You can do it inside the app or from a web browser, and both take a couple of minutes. Below are the official steps from Snapchat's help centre, plus what to do if you've forgotten the current one and a few security settings worth turning on while you're there.
Change your Snapchat password in the app
If you're logged in on your phone, this is the quickest route.
- Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon to open My Account.
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Tap Password.
- Follow the directions on the screen to set your new password.
You may be asked to confirm your current password or enter a code first. That's Snapchat checking it's really you, so have your phone or email to hand.
Change your Snapchat password on a computer
Snapchat's help article also describes changing it through its Accounts Portal in a web browser, which is handy if your phone is out of reach.
- Go to Snapchat's Accounts Portal and sign in with your username or email.
- Enter the verification code Snapchat sends you.
- Follow the prompts on screen to set a new password.
Type the Accounts Portal address yourself rather than following a link from a message, so you know you're on Snapchat's own site.
Forgot your current Snapchat password?
Changing a password assumes you know the old one. If you don't, you'll need a reset instead, which starts from the login screen.
- On the login screen, tap Forgot your password?
- Choose email or SMS.
- For email, open the reset link sent to the address on your account and enter a new password. If the link won't open, copy and paste it into your browser.
- For SMS, enter the verification code sent to your phone and tap Continue, then update your password in Settings.
Snapchat's help centre is firm that both routes depend on access to the email address or mobile number linked to your account. If you can't reach either, its help article says the password can't be reset, and knowing your username doesn't change that.
Choosing a strong new Snapchat password
Snapchat's help pages give a clear checklist for the new password:
- Make it at least 8 characters, and longer is better.
- Leave out your name, username, phone number, birthday and other personal details.
- Mix numbers, symbols and upper- and lowercase letters.
- Don't reuse your Snapchat password on any other app or site.
A password manager makes this painless because it remembers the long version for you. And never share your password with anyone: Snapchat says its staff will never ask for it.
Secure your Snapchat account after changing the password
A new password won't help much if someone's still logged in on an old device. Snapchat's security article suggests a few follow-up steps:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Check the Session Management Center for devices or browsers you don't recognise, and end any you don't know.
- Turn on two-factor authentication, so a code is needed each time you log in.
- Add a passkey if your device supports it, as a more secure way to log in.
- Keep your email address and phone number up to date, so you can always reset the password later.
If you got a login code or sign-in alert you didn't ask for, change your password straight away and check those devices. That's the moment to move fast.
When you can't change your Snapchat password
There are a few situations where the Password option won't help:
- Your account is deactivated. Snapchat says you can't change your password while it's deactivated. Log back in with your username within 30 days to reactivate it.
- You've lost access to both the email and phone number on the account, so a reset isn't possible.
- Your account is locked. Snapchat's help says a temporary lock can be lifted by logging in through the app or its accounts site and following the prompt there.
If you deactivated the account on purpose and want to understand that 30-day window, my guide on deleting a Snapchat account explains how it works. And if the app simply won't load or keeps throwing errors, check whether Snapchat is down before assuming the problem is your password.
Changing a Snapchat password for a business or shared account
If more than one person has ever posted for your brand from the same Snapchat login, change the password whenever someone leaves the team. Then check the Session Management Center so their devices are signed out, and make sure the recovery email is one your business controls, not a former staff member's personal inbox.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You know the password and want a new one | Settings, then Password in the app |
| You're on a computer | Accounts Portal, verification code, then new password |
| You've forgotten it | Forgot your password? on the login screen |
| You got an alert you didn't ask for | Change the password and review your devices |
