Ugandan Creators: Facebook Monetisation, Step by Step

Uganda is on Meta's list for Facebook Content Monetization, but the programme is invite-only, so you need an invitation and content in a supported language such as English. Swahili and Luganda aren't on the language list I read.

Good news first, Uganda is on Meta's list. Now the sensible bit: being on the list gets you to the starting line, not to a payout. Here's the route a Ugandan creator takes, step by step, with the places it tends to go wrong.

Step one: confirm Uganda is on the list

Meta's country and language availability page names the countries and territories where Facebook Content Monetization is available, and Uganda is among them. So are Kenya, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which means most of Uganda's neighbours in the region are in the same position. Ethiopia isn't on it, and I've explained what that means in my guide to Ethiopia.

Check the page itself before you rely on me, because Meta edits it. The country list is the first filter and it's the one you can't do anything about.

Step two: check your language, because this one catches Ugandans out

English has been Uganda's official language since 1962, and Swahili became a second official language in 2005. Luganda is the most widely spoken language, especially around Kampala. Meta's language list includes English. I couldn't find Swahili or Luganda on it.

That has a practical effect. A cooking channel in English can go ahead. A Luganda comedy skit might be classed as content in an unsupported language, which Meta lists among the things that may make content ineligible. If your audience loves Luganda, I'd keep making it, but I'd also produce a smaller set of English clips so some of your output sits clearly inside the rules.

Step three: wait for the invitation, and know what it looks like

Content Monetization is invite-only. Meta sends invitations through official in-product channels: the Facebook app, email, Meta Business Suite and the Professional dashboard. There's an interest form for creators who haven't been invited, but Meta is clear that the form isn't an application and doesn't guarantee an invite. Some creators also get in through approved agency partners in the Creator Fast Track.

Ugandan creators are often approached on Messenger by people promising a fast invite for a fee. Don't engage. A real invitation arrives inside Facebook's own tools, and nobody outside Meta can sell you one.

Step four: make content that qualifies

Once you're in, what pays is the performance of your public content, based on qualified views and watch time, as Meta puts it. There's no published rate. These are the rules that decide what counts:

  • Reels must be at least 10 seconds long and stories at least 5 seconds.
  • Watch time under 5 seconds on a piece means it doesn't qualify.
  • Boosted content, deleted content and content with ads turned off are out.
  • Content from another Page that you don't own or manage isn't eligible.
  • Settled copyright claims in favour of someone else make a post ineligible.

My Facebook Reels performance dashboard guide shows which numbers to watch, so you can tell which videos hold viewers past those first few seconds.

Step five: sort out how money reaches a Ugandan bank

The Ugandan shilling, UGX, has had no subdivision since 2013, so you'll see whole shillings only. Meta hasn't published payout methods, thresholds or tax details for Uganda on the pages I could read, so I can't tell you what the dashboard will offer. When you're onboarded, follow what it shows for your account, and ask your bank what it charges to convert and credit a foreign payment.

Common mistakes that cost Ugandan Pages

A few patterns come up again and again, and all of them are avoidable. People boost a post and then wonder why it earns nothing, when Meta lists boosted content as ineligible. They crosspost clips from a Page they don't manage. They delete a video after a bad week, which Meta also lists as ineligible if it's permanently deleted. And they cut their reels to a few seconds to chase views, when a reel needs at least 10 seconds to count.

None of these needs money or special software to fix. They need a little care with how you publish.

If the invitation doesn't come

Plenty of eligible Ugandan Pages wait a long time, and some never hear. That's not a verdict on your talent. Meta says amounts and invitations are decided by Meta alone. In the meantime, local businesses in Kampala, Entebbe and Jinja pay for promotion without needing Meta's say-so. It also helps to spread out: my guide to getting paid on TikTok in Uganda covers another platform's rules, and the Ghana version of this question shows how a similar West African page sets out the same programme.

Frequently asked questions

Is Facebook monetisation available in Uganda?

Yes in the sense that Uganda is on Meta's list for Facebook Content Monetization. The programme is invite-only, so being on the list doesn't mean every Page can earn.

Can I earn from Luganda or Swahili videos on Facebook?

Neither language is on the Content Monetization language list I read, so those videos may be ruled ineligible. English is supported.

How do I get invited to Facebook Content Monetization in Uganda?

Watch for an invitation in the Facebook app, email, Meta Business Suite or your Professional dashboard. You can use Meta's interest form, but it isn't an application.

Are Facebook Subscriptions open to Ugandan Pages?

No. Subscriptions are open to Pages in 37 listed countries and Uganda isn't one of them; elsewhere they're invite-only.

In what currency does Facebook pay Ugandan creators?

Meta hasn't published this for Uganda. Your payout settings will show what applies to your account, and your bank will convert into Ugandan shillings.
