Twitch Payouts in Kenya: No US Tax Treaty and Wire Fees

Twitch pays Kenyan streamers who reach Affiliate or Partner, and I found no Twitch page listing Kenya as unsupported. Kenya has no US tax treaty, ACH and SEPA don't apply, and a wire costs 16.00 US dollars, so the route you choose matters.

If you stream from Nairobi, Mombasa or Kisumu and you're wondering whether Twitch will ever put money in your hands, you deserve a straight answer. Twitch pays Kenyan streamers who reach Affiliate or Partner, as far as I can tell, but the details that change your take-home are different from the ones a South African or Indian streamer faces. Kenya has one particular wrinkle that most guides skip.

Kenya has no US tax treaty, and that shapes your Twitch payouts

Twitch asks every monetized streamer to complete tax information during onboarding. For people outside the United States, the question that matters is whether your country has a tax treaty with the US, because the IRS publishes reduced withholding rates for treaty countries.

I checked the IRS list of US tax treaties and the IRS table of treaty rates. Kenya has no entry in either. Compare that with South Africa, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, which are all listed. I can't tell you exactly what that means for the tax taken from your Twitch earnings, because I couldn't confirm how Twitch classifies streaming income. What I can say is that you shouldn't assume a treaty rate applies to you, and you should ask a Kenyan accountant before your first withdrawal.

Getting Kenyan shillings out of Twitch

The Kenyan shilling is issued by the Central Bank of Kenya and divided into 100 cents. Twitch itself pays in US dollars, so shillings only enter the picture when a payout is converted.

Kenya is outside the US and outside the Eurozone, which rules out two of the routes Twitch lists. ACH direct deposit is for US residents only, and SEPA local bank transfer is for Eurozone residents only. That leaves eCheck or local bank, PayPal, check and wire. Twitch describes the non-US local bank or eCheck option as turning US dollars into the local currency at the wholesale exchange rate, for a fee. The Affiliate Onboarding Guide warns that the methods you're shown can differ by region, so the options on your own screen settle the matter.

I haven't found a Twitch page that confirms or rules out PayPal for Kenyan accounts, so I won't guess. If PayPal isn't offered in your payout settings, that's your answer.

What a small Kenyan balance costs you

Fees hurt most when balances are small, so here is how the numbers stack up:

  • The minimum is 50 US dollars for eCheck or local bank, PayPal and check, and 100 US dollars for a wire.
  • A wire from Twitch to a creator outside the US carries a fee of 16.00 US dollars, according to the Payout Details FAQ.
  • That FAQ also says the fee schedule leaves out the currency exchange fee of 2.50% of the transaction.
  • A balance under the minimum waits until the following month and keeps building.

Put those together and the wire is a poor fit for anybody sitting near the minimum. If a cheaper method is available on your account, take it. If only the wire is offered, let the balance grow well past 100 US dollars first so the 16.00 US dollar fee is a smaller slice.

Why Kenya isn't in the 2022 minimum payout list

When Twitch cut its minimum from 100 US dollars to 50 US dollars in 2022, it did so country by country, naming Argentina, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan first, then Australia, Chile, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Peru. Kenya wasn't named. That's a historical list, not a ban, but it's a reminder that Twitch's payout rules have been uneven between countries. Read the minimum shown to you rather than relying on a blog, mine included.

Kenyan streamer questions about Bits and subscriptions

Bits pay 1 cent each to Affiliates and Partners wherever they live. Subscriptions are split 50/50 after taxes and processing fees. Neither figure changes because you're in Kenya, though what your viewers pay for a subscription can differ from market to market, and I couldn't verify Twitch's own list of local prices for Kenya.

To reach Affiliate in the first place, you need 50 followers, 8 hours streamed, 7 different streaming days and an average of 3 viewers, all within 30 days. Plenty of Kenyan channels get there with a community around one game or one Swahili-language niche, and I'd focus on that before worrying about fees.

Other places Kenyan creators can earn while they grow

Because Affiliate takes time, spread the risk. My guide on what YouTube pays creators in Kenya covers a platform with its own rules for Kenya, and Instagram earnings for Kenyan creators shows what to expect from short video. If you've read my page on Twitch payouts in South Africa, you'll notice the tax picture is quite different.
