To know if someone read your message on WhatsApp, look for two blue check marks beside it. One grey mark means sent, two grey marks mean delivered, and two blue mean read. For details, tap and hold your message and choose Info. Grey marks can also mean read receipts are off.
You send a message, then you wait. Has it landed? Have they seen it? On WhatsApp the answer is written in tiny check marks next to your message, and once you can read them, you'll stop wondering. I use them constantly when I'm waiting on a client, and they're just as handy if you handle customer chats for a small business. Here's how to read every mark, how to check in a group, and the reasons blue ticks may never appear even when someone has read your words. Everything below follows WhatsApp's own help article on read receipts.
Reading the WhatsApp check marks next to your message
Each message you send shows a small mark in the corner. According to WhatsApp's help pages, they work like this:
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| A clock | The message isn't sent or delivered yet, which can be down to connectivity |
| One grey check mark | The message was sent |
| Two grey check marks | The message was delivered to the person's phone or one of their linked devices |
| Two blue check marks | The person has read your message |
Delivered isn't the same as read. Two grey marks only say the message reached their phone, not that they've looked at it. If the second mark won't appear, WhatsApp says the recipient's phone may be off and the message hasn't reached any of their linked devices. If you're stuck on the clock, my guide to the clock mark on WhatsApp explains what to try. WhatsApp also says you can't change the colour of the check marks or the clock.
How to know if someone read your WhatsApp voice message
Voice notes have their own marks. WhatsApp's message info screen separates three states: delivered, read or seen (the person has seen the voice message but hasn't played it), and played. A blue microphone next to your voice message means it's been played. WhatsApp's help pages say play receipts for voice messages can't be turned off, so you can see this even when someone has switched read receipts off for ordinary messages.
Using message info to see who read your WhatsApp message
The message info screen shows when your message was delivered, read or played. It works in individual chats and in groups.
On Android
- Open the chat.
- Tap and hold the message you sent.
- Tap the info icon. If you don't see it, tap More options, then Info.
On iPhone
- Open the chat.
- Tap and hold the message you sent.
- Tap Info.
WhatsApp adds that if a member leaves a group, the message info screen still shows the original details for everyone, including the person who left.
When a WhatsApp group message counts as read
In a group chat, the second check mark appears when everyone has received your message, and two blue check marks appear when everyone has read it. That means one quiet member can keep the marks grey for the whole group. The message info screen is the quick way to see who that is. Read receipts also reset when you edit a message, so you can see who has viewed your updated version.
Why the WhatsApp ticks stay grey even though they've read it
This is where most of the confusion comes from. If you don't see two blue check marks, a blue microphone or Opened next to your message, WhatsApp's help pages list these reasons:
- You or the recipient might have disabled read receipts in the privacy settings. I've covered how in my guide to turning off read receipts on WhatsApp.
- The recipient might not have opened your conversation.
- You or the recipient might be having connection problems.
- When someone gets a message from you for the first time, a read receipt might not be sent to you.
- The date and time settings are wrong on your phone or theirs.
- The recipient might have blocked you. This is only one possible reason among several, so don't treat it as proof. I've written about the signs in my guide to being blocked on WhatsApp, so I won't repeat it here.
Notice that most of these are harmless. Blue ticks are a hint, not evidence of anything. If the reply matters, a gentle follow-up is more reliable than watching marks.
Which WhatsApp read receipts can't be switched off
WhatsApp's help pages say that turning off read receipts won't disable read receipts for group chats or play receipts for voice messages, and there's no way to turn those off. They also say that if you turn read receipts off, you won't see read receipts from other people either. It's a fair swap, and it explains why two people who both have receipts off never see blue ticks on each other's chats. The same setting affects Status: WhatsApp says you might not be able to see who views your status, and others might not see when you view theirs.

What to do when your WhatsApp message stays unread
- Check your own connection first. If your phone was offline when you sent, the message may be sitting on the clock.
- Look at the marks. One grey mark means it was sent but hasn't been delivered, which fits with their phone being off or offline.
- Two grey marks for a long time is normal for someone who hasn't opened the chat yet.
- Give it a sensible amount of time, then send a short, friendly nudge. Email or a phone call is fine for anything urgent.
The marks tell you about delivery. They don't tell you anyone's intentions.
Using WhatsApp read receipts sensibly if you run a business
If you answer customers on WhatsApp, blue ticks set expectations. A customer who sees two blue ticks and no reply may assume they're being ignored. Here's what I suggest:
- Send a quick acknowledgment even if the full answer will take a while.
- Don't read anything into a customer's missing blue ticks. They may simply have receipts off.
- If you need confirmation, ask for it: 'Could you confirm that works for you?' is far better than watching for ticks.
Being clear about when you'll reply takes more pressure off both sides than any receipt setting.
Frequently asked questions
What do two grey check marks mean on WhatsApp?
Two grey check marks mean your message was delivered to the person's phone or one of their linked devices. It doesn't tell you they've read it.
What do two blue check marks mean on WhatsApp?
Two blue check marks mean the person has read your message. In a group chat they appear when everyone has read it.
Can I see who read my message in a WhatsApp group?
Yes. Tap and hold your sent message and open Info to see the message info screen, which shows when it was delivered, read or played.
Why can't I see blue ticks even though they replied?
WhatsApp says a few things can cause this: read receipts switched off by you or them, a connection problem, wrong date and time settings, or the first message from you not sending a receipt.
Can read receipts be turned off in groups?
No. WhatsApp says turning off read receipts doesn't disable them for group chats or play receipts for voice messages.
