What Happens When You WhatsApp Call Someone Who Blocked You

When you WhatsApp call someone who has blocked you, WhatsApp's help centre says the call will not go through. That alone doesn't prove a block, because the article says the same signs can have other causes, and WhatsApp can't tell you whether someone has blocked you.

It's an awkward moment: you try to ring someone on WhatsApp and something feels off. It never connects, nobody answers, and you start to wonder whether they've blocked you. I'd rather you got a straight answer than a guess. WhatsApp's help centre says what happens to calls from someone who has been blocked, and it's honest about what it can't tell you. This page sticks to that, explains the other signs the help centre lists, and covers what a sensible next step looks like if you rely on WhatsApp to reach customers or clients.

What happens when you WhatsApp call someone who has blocked you

WhatsApp's help article about being blocked by someone lists several indicators, and one of them is about calls. It says any calls you attempt to place will not go through. That's the whole official answer: the call doesn't connect, rather than ringing out and being declined.

The article doesn't describe a particular screen, sound or message you'll see, so I can't tell you exactly how it looks on your phone. What it does say is what the result is. The call simply doesn't get through to the person who blocked you.

Why a WhatsApp call not connecting doesn't prove you're blocked

Here's the catch, and it's an important one. The same help article says that if you see all of its indicators for a contact, this could mean they're blocking you, but the signs may also be due to other reasons. It also says WhatsApp can't tell you if someone has blocked you, or who has blocked you.

WhatsApp's own connection advice shows how many ordinary things can stop messages and calls. It calls a poor internet connection the most common reason for problems sending and receiving, and suggests checking your signal and testing Wi-Fi against mobile data. So before you decide anything, make sure your own connection is working, and try the call again later.

The other signs WhatsApp lists when someone has blocked you on WhatsApp

A failed call is only one clue. The help article lists these as well:

  • You can't see their message read confirmation (the double blue check mark), but you can still see the single grey check mark that shows a message was sent.
  • You can't see their status.
  • You don't see updates to their profile photo.
  • Messages to them only show one grey check mark, never a second.
  • You can't add them to a group if you're a group admin.
  • You can no longer see their last seen or online status.

Any single one of these can have an innocent cause. Someone might have switched off read receipts, hidden their last seen, or simply not changed their photo. The help centre's own wording is that seeing all of the indicators for a contact could mean they're blocking you, not that it does. If you want the same question for Facebook, my piece on how to tell if someone blocked you on Facebook takes the same careful approach.

What blocking does on the WhatsApp side of the person who blocked you

It helps to understand what the other person's phone does. According to WhatsApp's help centre, when someone blocks a contact they no longer receive that contact's messages, calls and status updates. Their last seen, online status, status updates and profile photo changes aren't visible to the person they've blocked. Blocking doesn't remove anyone from a contact list on either phone.

The person who blocked you can undo it whenever they like. Blocked contacts are listed in WhatsApp's settings under Privacy, then Blocked contacts, and they can unblock from there. WhatsApp can't block or unblock contacts on anyone's behalf, so there's nothing the company can do for you from its side.

What to do if your WhatsApp calls to someone aren't going through

  1. Check your own connection: try a web page, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and update WhatsApp.
  2. Try again later in case their phone was off or out of signal.
  3. Look at the other signs in the list above, remembering that none of them is proof by itself.
  4. If you still think you've been blocked, accept that they may not want contact on WhatsApp, and don't try to get round it.
  5. If the matter is urgent, such as a delivery or a practical question, use a different route that you were already given, such as a work email.

That last point matters for small businesses. If a customer has blocked your number, the respectful choice is to leave it there. WhatsApp's reporting guidance says that if someone contacts you from new numbers, you can block and report each new number, so a workaround through another number can be reported. Contacting someone who has said no, by a back door, tends to make things worse.

Blocked on WhatsApp and being harassed: what the help centre says

Blocking exists to help people feel safe. If you are the one being contacted and you want it to stop, WhatsApp's reporting and blocking article explains that you can block and report a contact, and that if you feel you or anyone else is in immediate danger you should contact your local emergency services. If you feel unsafe or think a crime has been committed, it says you can contact your local law enforcement. It also suggests keeping screenshots of the relevant messages, calls or profile details as a record.

If you want to understand blocking on another app, my explainer on what a person sees when you block them on TikTok follows the same idea.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when you WhatsApp call someone who blocked you?

WhatsApp's help centre says any calls you attempt to place to a person who has blocked you will not go through.

Does a failed WhatsApp call mean I'm blocked?

Not by itself. WhatsApp says the indicators could mean someone has blocked you, but they may also be due to other reasons, and WhatsApp can't tell you whether you've been blocked.

Will they know I tried to call them?

WhatsApp's help article doesn't say what the blocked person's phone shows, so I can't confirm it. It only states that the calls don't go through.

Can WhatsApp tell me who blocked me?

No. The help article says WhatsApp can't tell you if someone has blocked you or who has blocked you, and it can't remove blocks on your behalf.

Can I message someone who has blocked me from another number?

WhatsApp's guidance says people can block and report each new number that contacts them, so it's best not to try. Respect the block and use another route only if you already have one.
