To report a scam on Messenger, open the conversation, scroll the right-hand menu to Report, pick a category and click Done or Submit. Don't reply to the message. Meta reviews up to 30 of the most recent messages in a reported conversation. Block the account afterwards so it can't contact you again.
If a message on Messenger feels wrong, trust that feeling. Scammers love Messenger because it looks personal: a friend's name, a friendly opening line, then a story that goes somewhere you didn't expect. Anyone with a business page or a visible profile tends to get approached more. This guide covers the reporting route Messenger's help centre gives, the warning signs it lists and what to do if you've already replied. It isn't legal advice, and menus vary by app version.
Report a scam on Messenger: the official route
Messenger's help centre treats a scam as something you report by reporting the conversation. Its guidance on avoiding scams is short and clear: if you think something is a scam, don't respond, and report it. On a computer, the steps are:
- Open the Messenger conversation you want to report.
- In the right-hand menu, scroll down and click Report.
- Select a category that best describes what's wrong.
- Click Done or Submit, depending on what you see.
On a phone, the help article says the steps are similar and sit under Privacy and support in the conversation's settings. The article has tabs for Android and iPhone, so choose your device there for the exact wording.
What Messenger reviews when you report a conversation
- Meta reviews up to 30 of the most recent messages sent in a conversation that an account reports.
- Reporting an end-to-end encrypted conversation works differently: the help centre says recent messages from that conversation are forwarded and sent securely to Meta for review.
- You can also report a single message. Hover over it, click More and choose Report.
- A report won't be created for every category. The help centre says technical problems and fake news categories don't create a report.
If you want to report a conversation, take a screenshot before you delete anything. The help centre suggests this because deleting the chat removes it from your side.
Warning signs of a scam message on Messenger
Facebook's help pages list patterns to watch for. These are the ones that come up most:
- Someone asks you to send them something of value, or promises you a gift or a prize.
- You're told you've won, but you need to hand over details such as your address or bank information to claim it.
- A person claims to be a friend or relative in an emergency.
- The sender wants to move the chat away from Facebook.
- Threats or urgency, such as 'your account will be closed today'.
- A romance that moves quickly, then turns to requests. The help pages say romance scammers may chat for weeks or months before they ask.
- The account has no friends, no profile photo or no real-looking activity.
One more from Facebook's phishing guidance: don't click links in unsolicited messages, even if they appear to come from Facebook. Meta says its representatives will never ask for passwords or card details over chat.
Block, report and delete: the order to do it in
- Don't reply, and don't click anything in the message.
- Take a screenshot if you may want to keep a record.
- Report the conversation with the steps above.
- Block the account so it can't message you again. My guide to checking whether your Facebook account was hacked is useful if the scammer's message came from a friend's account, because that friend's account may have been taken over.
- Delete the conversation if you don't need it.
Block and report are separate jobs. Blocking stops contact. Reporting is what tells Facebook there's a problem.
What to do if you replied to a Messenger scam
It happens to sensible people, so don't beat yourself up. The help centre's advice for the different cases is:
- If you gave away a password or logged in through a link, change your password straight away and review your account's security.
- If you handed over bank details or sent funds, contact your bank and follow its fraud process.
- If someone is threatening you, report it to the platform and, if you're in danger, contact the police.
- If a friend's account is the sender, tell the friend another way, such as by phone, so they can secure their account.
To make a repeat harder, my guide to locking Messenger on your phone covers the app lock option. It protects against someone picking up your phone, though it won't stop a scam message arriving.

Reporting other Messenger scams: transactions and Facebook buying and selling
Messenger's help centre treats some scams separately. Suspicious transactions on Messenger has its own report page, and scams linked to buying and selling on Facebook have a different route again: stop communicating with the other party and report the suspected scam to Facebook. If your scam came through one of those, use the matching help article rather than the general conversation report.
Protecting a business page from Messenger scammers
If you run a page, expect impersonators. Set a rule for your team: nobody ever asks a customer for a password or card number by Messenger. Tell customers that on your page, and keep it short. If somebody is pretending to be you, report that account and the conversation. It also helps to keep your own account secure with a strong password and two-step login.
