Facebook Lite is a lighter version of the Facebook app. According to Facebook's help centre, it has only the main Facebook features, uses less mobile data, takes up less space on your phone, and works on all networks, including 2G. You sign in with the same Facebook account.
Facebook Lite is a lighter version of Facebook. If you've seen it mentioned and wondered whether you should be using it, or whether it's a different thing altogether, you're not alone. I'll go through what Facebook's own help pages say about it, who it suits, and what you might miss. One caveat first: I couldn't read the live help article directly, so I'm working from the official page summaries, and what's offered on your phone can differ by device and region.
What Facebook Lite is
Facebook's help centre has an article asking what the difference is between Facebook Lite and the regular Facebook app for Android or iOS. Its answer, in short, is that Facebook Lite has only the main Facebook features, uses less mobile data, and takes up less space on your phone. It says the app works well on all networks, including 2G.
Facebook's Lite page adds that it's designed for areas with slow or unstable connections and can run on older Android phones that the regular app doesn't support. It's the same Facebook account and the same people, in a smaller app.
What you get and what you give up
| Facebook Lite | Regular Facebook app | |
|---|---|---|
| Features | The main features only | The full set |
| Mobile data | Uses less | Uses more |
| Storage on your phone | Takes up less space | Takes up more space |
| Slow connections | Built for them, including 2G | Can struggle |
| Older phones | Can run on older Android phones the regular app doesn't support | Needs a newer phone |
The trade-off is simple. Lite is faster and lighter, but you won't get every feature the full app offers. If you rely on a specific tool, such as a Page management feature, check that it's there before you switch.
Facebook Lite and Messenger are separate
This catches people out. Facebook Lite is a version of Facebook. It isn't the same as the chat app. Messenger is its own app, covered in my explainer on what the Messenger app is. Facebook has also made a lighter Messenger for Android in the past, called Messenger Lite, but I couldn't confirm from the official pages whether it's still offered, so check your app store.
Who Facebook Lite suits
- People with an older or low-storage phone.
- People on a patchy mobile connection or a small data allowance.
- Anyone travelling who wants Facebook to load quickly on a weak signal.
- A small business owner who just needs to check messages and post updates on the go.
If you manage a Page with lots of tools, such as scheduling, insights and ad settings, I'd keep the full app or the website for those jobs.
How to get Facebook Lite
Facebook's help centre has an article called How do I download the Facebook Lite app. It says you can get it from the Google Play Store or from the Facebook Lite website. The help pages also mention iOS in places, but the beta programme and the store listing are described for Android, so I can't promise it's on offer for iPhone. Look in your phone's app store, and only download from the store or Facebook's own page. Avoid files from random websites.
Facebook Lite beta programme
Facebook's help centre describes an Android-only beta programme that gives early access to upcoming versions of Lite. It warns that beta builds may have reliability problems and update frequently. Unless you enjoy testing, I'd stay on the standard release.
What Facebook Lite looks like to use
From the help pages, the idea is a simpler, quicker app. You'll still see your feed, your friends and your groups, but fewer extras around them. Because it keeps things small, pages tend to load faster on a weak signal. If you've used Facebook in a web browser on a basic phone, Lite should feel familiar in spirit, though it's still an app on your home screen.
Questions about Facebook Lite for small business owners
If you run a Page, the main question is whether the tools you need are present in Lite. For replying to customer messages and posting simple updates, a light app is often enough. For anything more involved, I'd use the full app or the website on a computer. It's worth testing one task before you depend on it, such as replying to a message, to see that it behaves as you expect.
Another point: because Lite is aimed at slower networks, it can be a handy backup if your main phone is struggling. Keep it in mind as a second route to your account rather than a replacement, and keep your login details somewhere safe.

Privacy and settings in Facebook Lite
Your privacy choices belong to your account, not to the app. If you set a post to friends only in the full app, it stays that way. That said, menus vary by app version, so if you want to change a setting in Lite, look for the settings area in the app and read the options before you tap.
Do you need to change your account for Facebook Lite?
No. You sign in with the same account. Your friends, groups and Pages come with you. Menus vary by app version, so some things may sit in slightly different places.
If Facebook Lite isn't working
Try the same basics as any app: restart the phone, check your connection, update the app from the store, and reinstall if needed. For the chat side, my guide to updating Messenger walks through the store steps, which are similar.
Should you use Facebook Lite or the full Facebook app?
My view: if your phone runs the full app comfortably, stay with it for the full toolset. If it's slow, full of photos, or you're often on a weak signal, try Lite. You can always switch back, because both use the same account.
