How Much Does Wag Pay Walkers and Sitters?

Wag pays Pet Caregivers the rates they set themselves in the app, and caregivers keep 100% of their tips. Wag's help centre says pet parents pay roughly your rate multiplied by 1.67, before tips, booking fees and taxes. Payouts go through Stripe, processed every Wednesday and paid every Friday, with no fee for the standard weekly payout.

Wag is one of the best-known dog walking apps in the US, and walkers, sitters and boarders all earn through it. The question I see most is how much of the booking price ends up with the caregiver. Wag doesn't publish a commission percentage, but its help centre gives you the maths another way, so let's start there.

How Wag works out caregiver pay

On Wag, you're an independent business owner setting your own prices. Wag's Dynamic Pricing guide says you have complete control over your rates on the platform, and that you can set your own rates for services and additional pet fees. The amount you set is what you're paid for the service.

The useful line is the one about what pet parents pay. Wag says that to understand how much Pet Parents will pay for your services, multiply your pricing settings by 1.67. Tips, booking fees and any state taxes aren't included in that estimate. So the price the owner sees is roughly two-thirds higher than your own rate, and the gap is what funds the platform.

That matters for how you price. If you're comparing yourself with local walkers who work privately, remember that an owner on Wag sees your rate after that multiplier, not the number on your screen.

Wag's Dynamic Pricing tool and local averages

Wag's app compares your rates with what other caregivers nearby charge. It shows an Average Price in My Area, which Wag defines as the cumulative average that other Pet Caregivers in your area charge for the same service type. Your area is set by your Available Service Filters: the location you search from and how far you're willing to travel.

Wag warns that pricing well above or below that average may change demand for your services, and the app alerts you when your rates are higher than the typical range. You're free to ignore it, but the alert is a useful nudge when bookings slow down.

Caregivers who subscribe to Wag! Pro see a higher average service pricing, marked with a Pro tag, because Wag says there's higher demand for qualified and dedicated caregivers.

Bidding and locked-in rates on Wag

The app works partly through bids. Before you opt into a service request, you can adjust your bid or pricing. Once you've submitted it and requested the service, the price for that service can't be changed. If you're matched, the booking appears in your Booked tab, and Wag says the service rate and its fees are then locked in.

The only way to change the price on a booked service is for the pet parent to cancel and rebook after you've updated your rates. So set your prices before busy periods, not in the middle of them.

Who can become a Wag Pet Caregiver

Wag's caregiver sign-up page says you must be at least 18 and a US permanent resident. Every prospective caregiver has to complete a background check with Wag's partner, Vetty, using a Social Security Number and a valid US government-issued ID. Wag says the application fee is non-refundable, so be sure before you apply.

How and when Wag pays caregivers

Wag pays through Stripe, and you set up a Stripe Express account the first time you log in to the Wag! Pet Caregivers app. Wag notes that if you already have a Stripe account, you'll need a new one for Wag.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The pay cycle runs Tuesday through Monday. Wag says payouts are processed every Wednesday and paid out every Friday, to a bank account or an eligible debit card. There's no fee for the standard weekly payout. If you're eligible for Instant Pay, you can get your money sooner for an additional fee.

Wag tax forms and costs you carry

Wag is clear that taxes are the independent contractor's responsibility. For the 2025 tax year, Wag says you may receive a Form 1099-K if your gross payments through Stripe are over 20,000 US dollars and you have a minimum of 200 transactions. In rare cases, a 1099-NEC may be issued if non-service payments such as referral income exceed 600 US dollars. Wag also points out that you may still need to report and pay tax even if you don't get a form, so keep your own records and speak to an accountant.

Your running costs sit with you too: travel between walks, supplies and the time spent getting to each booking. Factor those in when you set your rates.

If you're choosing between pet apps, my guide to how Rover takes its cut from sitters explains a different way of taking a cut.

Making Wag pay better

  1. Look at the local average the app shows you, then pick the level of demand you want before you change anything.
  2. Remember owners see roughly your rate times 1.67, so a small change on your side looks bigger to them.
  3. Update rates before peak periods, since booked services are locked in.
  4. Set additional pet fees, because Wag lets you charge for each extra pet.
  5. Use the free Friday payout unless you need the money faster.
