Instagram pays Ugandan creators nothing per view, and Uganda isn't named in Meta's announced lists for Instagram gifts, bonuses or its brand-matching tool, so the platform itself is unlikely to pay you directly. Ugandan creators earn from Instagram through brand deals paid in Ugandan shillings, often over mobile money, while YouTube is the main platform with a partner programme open to creators in Uganda.
Uganda is a tricky place to build an Instagram income, and not for the reasons most people think. The audience is small but growing fast, local brands are paying attention, and yet creators have twice watched access to social media switched off around elections. If you're in Kampala, Gulu or Mbarara and planning to earn from Instagram, I'd plan around all of that from day one.
Access first: Uganda's social media shutdowns
Before talking money, it's worth being honest about reliability. Around the 2021 election, Uganda cut off social media. VOA reported that when the government restored Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp in 2021, Facebook stayed blocked.
It happened again around the 2026 general election. The internet monitoring group OONI recorded a nationwide shutdown from January 13 to 18, and found that after connectivity returned, the Uganda Communications Commission kept social media and messaging apps restricted, with Instagram among those showing blocking. People Daily reported that the UCC's directive covered WhatsApp, TikTok, X, Instagram, Telegram and app stores, that Facebook had remained suspended since 2021, and that a reopening was announced on Monday, January 26. Airtel Uganda said the same day that full connectivity, including social media, was back.
What does that mean for your income? Brands may pause campaigns during election periods, and a sudden block can land in the middle of a paid post schedule. Build a clause into your agreements that lets you move dates if access is cut, and keep a way to reach your audience off Instagram, such as a WhatsApp community or an email list.
Which Instagram earning tools a Ugandan account can expect
Instagram for Creators lists subscriptions, gifts, bonuses, badges, partnership ads and brand partnerships as ways to earn. For Uganda, Meta's own announcements are quiet:
- Uganda wasn't among the 33 countries named when Meta expanded Instagram gifts.
- The invite-only holiday bonus test covered only the United States, South Korea and Japan.
- Meta's brand-matching creator tool was offered first in the US and then to a short list of countries that didn't include Uganda.
- Subscriptions opened in an additional 35 countries, but Meta didn't say which.
Meta does widen access without announcements, so check the Monetisation section of your Professional Dashboard from time to time. If gifts ever appear, Meta's bar is a professional account, age over 18, its Partner Monetization Policies and at least 5,000 followers.
A small audience that's growing quickly
DataReportal reports that Meta's ad tools showed 883 thousand Instagram users in Uganda in late 2025, about 1.7 percent of the population and 3.4 percent of adults. That's modest. The growth is the interesting part: potential ad reach rose by 144 thousand, or 19.4 percent, over the year, and by 58.8 thousand, or 7.1 percent, in a single quarter.
The adult audience was 58.3 percent male and 41.7 percent female. For a creator, a small and fast-growing platform is often an opportunity. There are fewer established names competing for local brand budgets, and the people who are on Instagram in Uganda tend to be urban, connected and exactly who many consumer brands want to reach.
Getting paid in Ugandan shillings
The Ugandan shilling, code UGX, is issued by the Bank of Uganda and has had no smaller subdivision since 2013. Ugandan brands normally pay creators in shillings, and mobile money is the everyday rail: MTN Uganda introduced its Mobile Money service in 2009, and it's now how many small businesses send and receive payments. Agree the amount, the payment method and the date in writing, and keep every transaction message as your record.
If Meta ever pays you directly, the setup lives in the Payouts area of your professional dashboard. Instagram's help centre describes connecting a bank, entering bank details, linking PayPal or adding a debit card, with options varying by country, and adding tax details. Instagram also says that if no payout account is added within 6 months, the earnings are forfeited, so don't ignore the reminders.
Uganda isn't on the IRS list of countries with a US income tax treaty, which matters if a US company ever pays you. For your own tax position, please speak to a Ugandan accountant.

Where Ugandan creators can earn per view
If you want income that grows with views, YouTube is the strongest option. Uganda is on the YouTube Partner Program list and the expanded programme list, so a channel there can earn from ads once it qualifies. My guide to how YouTube pays creators in Uganda explains the thresholds and how AdSense payments reach a Ugandan bank.
Facebook is a more complicated story. Meta lists Uganda as a country where Facebook Content Monetization ads are available, but with Facebook reported as suspended in the country since 2021, I wouldn't build a plan around it until access is clearly restored.
Pricing Instagram brand work in Uganda
I haven't found a reputable named source that publishes Ugandan Instagram rates, so I won't quote a shilling figure. Here's what local brands tend to weigh:
- How many of your followers are in Uganda, and in which towns.
- Your usual Reel reach and comments, not your best week.
- Whether you post in English, Luganda or another local language, and who that reaches.
- Your reliability: brands value creators who deliver on time even when access is patchy.
- Proof from earlier campaigns, such as sales codes used or messages received.
For the bigger picture on what makes an Instagram account commercially valuable, my notes on what I've learned from Instagram marketing cover the habits that win brand trust.
