How Much Does YouTube Pay per 1,000 Views in Kenya?

YouTube doesn't publish a set rate for Kenya: what you earn per 1,000 views (your RPM) depends on your viewers' location, niche and how many views showed ads. Kenya is on the YouTube Partner Program list, and payouts arrive through AdSense by wire transfer or check, converted into Kenyan shillings by your bank.

If you're filming in Nairobi, Mombasa or Kisumu and wondering what a thousand views is worth, I'll start with the honest bit. YouTube doesn't publish a Kenya rate, and anyone quoting you a fixed figure is guessing. What I can give you is how the money is worked out, what Kenyan creators can switch on, and how the cash lands in your bank account in shillings.

The good news first: Kenya sits on every YouTube monetisation list I checked, including the newer lower-entry tier. That puts Kenyan channels ahead of several neighbours when it comes to fan income.

Kenya is on the YouTube Partner Program list

YouTube's own availability page names Kenya as a country where the YouTube Partner Program is open. To get in, your channel needs 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Once you're accepted, ads can run on your videos and you start earning a share of what advertisers pay.

Kenya is also on the expanded programme list. That's the earlier door: 500 subscribers with 3 valid public uploads in the last 90 days, plus either 3,000 watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days. It doesn't switch on ad revenue, but it does let you start earning from fans sooner, which matters when your audience is loyal but still small.

Fan money Kenyan creators can switch on

Here's where Kenya does well. YouTube's help pages list Kenya for channel memberships, and Super Chat and Super Stickers are available to eligible Kenyan creators too. So a channel that goes live regularly, say a football reaction show or a late-night study stream, can earn from viewers directly, not only from ads.

  • Channel memberships: monthly payments from your most loyal viewers in return for perks.
  • Super Chat and Super Stickers: paid, highlighted messages during live streams and Premieres.
  • YouTube Premium revenue: a share when Premium members watch your videos.

Each of these feeds into your RPM, so a Kenyan channel with an engaged live audience can see a higher figure per thousand views than a channel that relies on ads alone.

Why nobody can give you a fixed Kenya rate

YouTube measures earnings with RPM, which it defines as how much money you've earned per 1,000 video views, after YouTube's revenue share. It counts every view, including views that showed no ad. That's why two Kenyan channels with the same view count can earn very different amounts.

The biggest driver is where your viewers are, not where you are. Advertisers pay for the audience they reach, and YouTube's analytics help notes that geography affects CPM, the price advertisers pay per thousand ad impressions. If most of your views come from inside Kenya, your ads are mostly bought by advertisers targeting Kenyan viewers. If your channel pulls viewers from the UK or the US, you're competing for a different pool of ad money.

Niche matters as well. Personal finance, tech reviews and business explainers tend to attract advertisers with bigger budgets than prank compilations. Video length counts too, because longer videos can carry mid-roll ads.

Shorts are paid differently

Shorts don't earn per ad the way long videos do. YouTube pools ad money from the Shorts Feed each month, then shares it out by each creator's portion of engaged views from monetising creators in each country, and creators keep 45% of their allocated revenue. A viral Short from Kenya can bring subscribers fast, but the money per thousand views is usually a different story from long-form.

How the money gets from YouTube to Kenya

YouTube pays through AdSense for YouTube. For Kenya, Google's payment methods table lists check and wire transfer, with EFT not available. If you pick wire transfer to a local bank, Google's rule is that the bank or branch must be in the same country as the address in your payments settings.

The Kenyan shilling isn't one of the reporting currencies on the AdSense payment thresholds page, so most Kenyan accounts work to the US dollar threshold of 100 US dollars before a payout is released. Your bank then converts it to KES. Before any payment, Google asks you to verify your identity, and address verification kicks in at 10 US dollars or the local equivalent.

US tax on Kenyan YouTube earnings

This trips people up. YouTube asks every creator to submit US tax info, even if you've never been to the US. When you do, withholding only applies to earnings from US viewers, at a rate between 0 and 30% depending on whether your country has a tax treaty with the US. Kenya isn't on the IRS list of US income tax treaties.

If you don't submit tax info on an individual account, YouTube says 24% of your total worldwide earnings will be withheld. That's a painful, avoidable cut, so fill in the form in AdSense for YouTube under Payments. I'm not a tax adviser, so check your personal position with a Kenyan accountant.

What a big video can mean in Kenya

Creators often ask me what a million views pays in Kenya. Honestly, it depends on the mix: how many views showed ads, how many came from outside Kenya, how long people watched, and whether you're long-form or Shorts. YouTube Studio shows your own RPM in the Revenue tab, and that's the only figure worth planning around.

A big video also earns in ways the RPM line won't show: new members, a wave of Super Chats on your next live, and brands who now want to work with you. Local brand deals, where a Kenyan company pays you to feature its product, often pay more than the ads on the same video.

Frequently asked questions

How much does YouTube pay per 1000 views in Kenya?

YouTube doesn't publish a Kenya rate. Your earnings per 1,000 views, called RPM, depend on where your viewers are, your niche, video length and how many views showed ads. You can see your own RPM in YouTube Studio under Revenue.

Is YouTube monetisation available in Kenya?

Yes. Kenya is on YouTube's Partner Program availability list and on the expanded programme list, so Kenyan creators can earn from ads, memberships, Super Chat and Premium once they qualify.

How do Kenyan YouTubers get paid?

Through AdSense for YouTube. Google's table lists check and wire transfer for Kenya, and the bank must be in the same country as your payments address. Your bank converts the payment into Kenyan shillings.

Do Kenyan creators need to fill in US tax info?

Yes. If you submit it, withholding only applies to earnings from US viewers. If you don't, YouTube says 24% of your total earnings can be withheld on an individual account. Speak to a Kenyan accountant about your own tax.

Can I get paid by YouTube through M-Pesa?

YouTube's payment methods table for Kenya lists check and wire transfer only. Brand deals you agree directly can be paid however you and the brand agree, but YouTube payouts go to a bank.
