The fastest way to chat with an unknown number on WhatsApp is to tap New chat, type the full number with its country code in the search bar, and tap Chat if the number is on WhatsApp. If your version doesn't offer that, send the number to yourself in a chat and tap it, or use WhatsApp's official click to chat link. The number needs a WhatsApp account.
Saving a number first is the usual route, but it's a faff when it's a one-off: a delivery driver, a landlord, someone replying to a classified ad. You don't have to clutter your address book. Three methods work, and I've put them in order from easiest to most fiddly.
One thing applies to all three. The number must be in international format, which means the country code first, then the number. In many countries a leading zero on a local number is dropped when you add the country code, so if a message won't start, check that first.
Method 1: use New chat (the easiest)
- Open WhatsApp and tap New chat.
- Tap the search bar and type the full number, country code first.
- If the number is on WhatsApp, newer versions show a Chat option for it. Tap it.
- Type your message and send.
If nothing appears, the number may not be on WhatsApp, or your version is older and doesn't support this. Update the app and try again, or move on to method two.
Method 2: send the number to yourself
This works in older versions too, and it's my usual fallback because it needs nothing but WhatsApp itself.
- Open a chat where only you will see the message. Many people use a message yourself chat for this.
- Type or paste the full number with the country code, and send it.
- Tap the number in the message.
- Choose Chat with, followed by the number.
WhatsApp opens a fresh chat with that number. If the number isn't registered on WhatsApp, you won't be able to start one.
Method 3: use WhatsApp's click to chat link
WhatsApp has an official click to chat feature, described in the WhatsApp Help Center. Search for click to chat there. It's a web link that opens a conversation with any number without saving it. You add the number after their link address, in international format, with no plus sign, no spaces and no dashes.
I'm not writing the address out here, and that's deliberate. Take it straight from the Help Center page so you know it's the real one. Look-alike links are a favourite trick, and a copied link from a random site isn't worth the risk.
Open the finished link in the browser on your phone and it hands you over to WhatsApp. It's handy if you message the same number again and again, since you can bookmark the finished link.
Which method should you pick?
| Method | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| New chat search | Quick one-off messages on a current version | Older versions may not show the Chat option |
| Send it to yourself | Any version, no browser needed | Needs a spare chat and a few extra taps |
| Click to chat link | Messaging the same number often | Take the link format from the Help Center, not a random site |
What does the other person see?
They'll see your number, and your name and photo depending on your privacy settings. Because you're not in their contacts, they may also see a note that you're not in their contacts, along with a prompt offering to block or report you. That's why the first message matters.
Say who you are straight away. Something like this works: "Hi, it's Sam from the flat viewing on Saturday. Is this the right number?" It's short, polite and gives them a reason to answer instead of reaching for the block button.
Writing a first message that gets a reply
People are wary of messages from numbers they don't recognise, and they're right to be. A good first message does three jobs: it says who you are, why you're writing, and what you need, all in one or two lines.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Start with your name and the link between you, such as the advert, the event or the person who gave you the number.
- Ask one clear question so they can answer in a word.
- Skip the links, the attachments and the long story. You can add detail once they've replied.
If you get no answer, give it a day before you follow up. One polite nudge is fine. Three in an hour looks like spam, and it's the quickest way to get blocked.
Staying safe with numbers you don't know
- Be polite and say who you are in your first message.
- Never share a verification code with anyone, however friendly they sound.
- Don't click links from strangers, and don't send money or personal details to someone you haven't verified.
- If a stranger writes to you first asking for codes or cash, don't reply. Block and report them.
- Remember the number can see your profile photo and name, depending on your settings, so check your privacy settings first.
If you're messaging unknown numbers often for work, say customers or suppliers, think about a dedicated setup. WhatsApp Business is a separate app made for that, and our guide to using WhatsApp Business as a separate app explains how it sits next to your personal account.
The message won't send. What now?
Start with the basics. Check the country code and that you didn't type extra digits. Check your signal. Then see whether the number is on WhatsApp at all, because if it isn't, no method will work.
If a message shows a single tick and never moves on, that's a different problem. Our guides on why WhatsApp isn't sending messages and how to fix WhatsApp messages not delivering cover the usual fixes.
A final tip from me: if a number matters, save it afterwards. Doing a one-off chat without saving is fine, but a number you'll use again deserves a clear name in your contacts so you can find the chat later.
Frequently asked questions
Can I WhatsApp someone without saving their number?
Yes. Use New chat and type the full number with its country code, send the number to yourself and tap it, or use WhatsApp's official click to chat link. The number must have a WhatsApp account.
Why doesn't the Chat option show up when I type a number?
The number may not be on WhatsApp, or your app version may be older. Check the country code, update WhatsApp, and try the send it to yourself method instead.
Will they know I don't have their number saved?
They'll see your number, and your name and photo depending on your privacy settings. They may also see a note that you're not in their contacts, with a prompt to block or report.
Is it safe to message a number I don't know?
It's fine if you're polite and say who you are, but be careful. Never share a verification code, don't click links from strangers, and block and report anyone who asks for codes or cash.
