To delete a WhatsApp group, you first have to leave it, then delete it from your chat list. If you're the admin and want the group gone for everyone, remove every member one by one, exit the group, then tap Delete group. WhatsApp has no single "delete for everyone" button for ordinary groups.
That surprises a lot of people, because you can delete a single message for everyone but not a whole group. The steps depend on one question, so let's answer that first.
Are you the admin?
Open the group, tap the group name at the top to reach group info, and scroll to the list of participants. Admins have a small "Group admin" label next to their name. Find yours.
- If you see the label next to your name, use the admin path below. You can end the group completely.
- If you don't see it, you're a member. You can leave and clear the group from your own phone, but the group carries on for everyone else.
One reassuring fact before you start: nothing here deletes anyone's phone, photos or their other chats. It only affects this one group.
Admin path: end the group for everyone
Do this on your phone, not WhatsApp Web, so you can see the full participant list.
- Open the group and tap its name to open group info.
- Scroll down to the participants list.
- Tap a participant's name and choose Remove. Confirm.
- Repeat for every other person until only you are left.
- Scroll down and tap Exit group, then confirm.
- Tap Delete group. This removes it from your chat list.
It's slow in a big group, and I wish there were a faster way, but there isn't one for ordinary groups. If you'd rather not remove people one at a time, you can simply exit and delete it from your own phone and leave the group alive for the others. Whether that works for you depends on whether you need it shut down or just gone from your screen.
Menu labels can differ between versions. If you can't spot "Remove" or "Exit group", search the settings or the group info page for the word.
Member path: leave and delete
- Open the group and tap its name.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Exit group, then confirm.
- Go back to your chat list and open the group again.
- Tap the group name, then Delete group.
The group still exists for everyone else. They'll see a short note that you left, and you won't get any more messages from it.
Save the chat before you delete it
Deleting the group from your list also deletes its chat history on your phone. If there's anything you might want later, such as photos, directions, receipts or a decision the group made, export it first.
- Open the group and tap its name.
- Scroll down and tap Export chat.
- Choose to include media or not, and pick where to send the file, such as your email or a notes app.
Do this before you exit, because once you've left and deleted, there's nothing to export. If your backups seem stuck while you're sorting this out, this WhatsApp backup fix should get them moving again.
What the others see
When you exit a group, the other members see a message that you left. Nothing else changes for them: the group, its history and its photos stay.
- If you leave as the only admin, WhatsApp makes another member an admin, so the group isn't left without one. If you want the group to end, remove the members first.
- Members you removed can still see their own copy of the old messages on their phone. Removing someone doesn't wipe their device.
- Deleting the group from your list doesn't tell anyone. Only the exit message does.
If you manage groups for a team or club, it helps to understand roles before you start removing people. My guide on the add member tag in WhatsApp groups explains a little about how members and admins are shown.
A polite habit if the group matters to others: post a short line before you go, such as "I'm closing this group, so please save anything you need." It takes ten seconds and spares people from losing photos or details they hadn't copied yet.

Groups inside a Community
If the group sits inside a WhatsApp Community, it's a bit different. The community admin can deactivate the whole community, which ends the structure it's built around. Ordinary members can still exit individual groups. If you only run one announcement group, check whether it belongs to a Community before you start removing people, because the buttons you need may be on the Community page instead.
If the buttons don't appear
Sometimes the steps above don't match what's on your screen. These are the usual reasons.
- There's no Remove option. You're probably a member, not an admin. Check the participant list for the admin label next to your name.
- Exit group is missing. Scroll right to the bottom of group info, because it sits below the media and participants sections.
- Delete group doesn't show yet. You have to exit first. The delete option only appears once you're no longer in the group.
- The old version of the app looks different. Update WhatsApp, then open group info again.
Once you've left, you can't just hop back in. You'd need an admin to add you again or send an invite, so be sure before you leave something important, like a family group or a school group.
When you just want some peace
Many people want to delete a group because it's noisy, not because it needs to stop existing. Before you remove everyone, consider these quieter options.
- Mute the group. Open it, tap the name, tap Mute notifications and choose how long.
- Archive the chat so it stops sitting at the top of your list.
- Exit quietly if you're a member. Nobody has to know why.

Frequently asked questions
Can I delete a WhatsApp group for everyone with one button?
No. For ordinary groups there isn't a single delete-for-everyone button. An admin removes every member, exits the group, then deletes it.
What happens if I leave a WhatsApp group as the only admin?
WhatsApp makes another member an admin so the group keeps going. If you want the group to end, remove all the members before you exit.
Will deleting a group delete the chat history?
Yes, deleting the group from your chat list removes its history from your phone. Export the chat first if you need to keep it.
Do other members know when I leave a group?
Yes, they see a message in the group saying you left. Deleting the group afterwards doesn't send anything else.
How do I delete a WhatsApp group inside a Community?
A community admin can deactivate the Community. Members can still exit individual groups from group info.
