Not in ordinary chats. Telegram doesn't document any screenshot alert for normal cloud chats, groups or channels. In secret chats, Telegram says it will try to alert the other person, and senders of self-destructing photos and videos are notified if someone tries a screenshot. View Once media and protected channels block screenshots instead.

Telegram has a reputation for privacy, so plenty of people assume it tells the other person the moment you take a screenshot. The real answer depends on which kind of chat you're in and what kind of message you're capturing. I've gone through Telegram's own FAQ and its official blog posts to separate what's documented from what's guesswork. If you run a Telegram channel or group for your business, the last sections cover the settings that stop members saving your content.
Screenshots in ordinary Telegram cloud chats
Most conversations on Telegram are cloud chats: your normal one-to-one messages, groups and channels. Telegram's FAQ explains that these are stored encrypted in the Telegram Cloud and sync across your phones, tablets and computers. Telegram doesn't document any screenshot alert for ordinary messages in these chats, so a screenshot of a normal text message or a regular photo is quiet.
That changes in three situations: secret chats, self-destructing media and chats where the owner has switched off saving. Each works a little differently.
Telegram secret chats and screenshot alerts
Secret chats are Telegram's extra-private mode. The FAQ says they use client-client encryption, aren't stored in the Telegram cloud, and can only be read on the device where they started. They're also where Telegram's screenshot alerts live.
Telegram's FAQ says it will make every effort to alert you about screenshots taken in your secret chats. It's honest about the limits too: the FAQ says it may still be possible to bypass these notifications and take screenshots silently, that there's no bulletproof way of detecting screenshots on certain systems, and that nobody can stop someone photographing their screen with a different device.
So in a secret chat, a screenshot will usually trigger an alert, but you shouldn't treat the alert as a guarantee. Secret chats also let you set a self-destruct timer on every message, and the FAQ says the countdown starts the moment the message appears on the recipient's screen.
Starting a Telegram secret chat
- Open the profile of the person you want to talk to.
- Tap the ... button.
- Choose Start Secret Chat.
- To make messages disappear, tap the clock icon (in the message field on iPhone, in the top bar on Android) and pick a time limit.
Menu labels can vary a little between Android, iPhone and desktop versions, and because secret chats are tied to one device, you won't see them on your other devices.
Telegram self-destructing photos, videos and View Once
You don't need a secret chat to send disappearing media. Telegram's blog announced in July 2017 that you could set a self-destruct timer on photos and videos in private chats, with the countdown starting when the recipient opens them. The same post says that if the recipient tries to screenshot your disappearing media, you'll get a notification immediately.
In September 2023, Telegram added View Once media for any one-to-one chat. Its blog says saving and taking screenshots won't work for view-once media, as with all self-destructing media, and the photo or video is permanently deleted from the chat once the recipient opens it. You choose View Once, or a short viewing time, from the timer icon in the media editor before you send.

| Group or channel with Restrict Saving Content on | Screenshots prevented, forwarding blocked |
Blocking screenshots in Telegram groups and channels
For groups and channels, Telegram gives owners a stronger tool than a notification. A Telegram blog post dated December 7, 2021 introduced Restrict Saving Content. When an owner turns it on, members can't forward messages, screenshots are prevented and saving media from posts is limited.
- Open your group or channel and tap its name to see the Info page.
- Go to Group Type or Channel Type.
- Switch on Restrict Saving Content.
Telegram later brought a similar option to one-to-one chats. Its blog says you can open someone's profile, tap the menu and choose Disable Sharing, which restricts forwarding and prevents screenshots or saving media in that chat. The announcement says this is for Telegram Premium users. It doesn't say whether the other person is told.
What Telegram screenshot rules mean for a business channel
If you use Telegram to share tips, offers or members-only content, Restrict Saving Content is worth switching on for anything you don't want copied straight onto other channels. It won't stop someone photographing their screen with a second phone, as Telegram itself points out, so don't post anything you'd be upset to see shared. For everything else, leave saving on: people forwarding your posts is how a channel grows. If you're weighing up whether Telegram suits your business at all, my explainer on using Telegram as a business channel covers the basics.
Telegram screenshots compared with other messaging apps
Every messaging app handles this differently, and the rules change between chats and stories on the same app. If you use several, see how Snapchat handles screenshots of chats, whether Instagram flags screenshots of DMs, and what happens when you screenshot a WhatsApp status.
