How to Hide Your Followers and Following List on Instagram

The short version: you can't fully hide your followers and following list from Instagram as a company, but you can switch to a private account and control who sees that list, and a business or creator account can hide the follower count number from its public profile. Those are two different problems with two different fixes, and most of the confusion online comes from people mixing them up.

I'll say the uncomfortable bit up front because nobody else seems to want to: if you want a fully public account AND a fully hidden follower list, Instagram will not give you that combination. You get one or the other. Choose which problem you're trying to solve before you touch any settings.

The two things people mean by "hide my followers"

When someone types this into Google, they usually mean one of two completely separate things:

  • I don't want strangers scrolling through my followers and following lists
  • I don't want my follower count number showing on my profile

The first is about privacy and who can view your lists. The second is about vanity metrics and optics. The fix for each is different, so let's take them one at a time.

Hiding your lists completely: go private

This is the only genuine way to stop non-followers seeing who you follow and who follows you. Here's the exact path:

  • Open your profile, tap the three lines top right
  • Tap Settings and privacy
  • Tap Account privacy
  • Switch on Private account

Once that's on, only people you've approved as followers can see your followers and following lists, your posts, and your Reels. Anyone else sees a locked profile with a follow request button and nothing else. I've covered the mechanics and the limits of this in more detail in Hiding Followers on Instagram: What You Can and Can't Do, because the "can't" part trips people up more than the "can."

Here's the bit people miss: going private doesn't hide your lists from the people who already follow you. If you run a small coaching business on Instagram and you flip to private hoping to stop a competitor or an ex-business partner seeing your client list, it won't work if that person already follows you. You'd need to remove or block them specifically. Privacy settings protect you from strangers, not from people already inside the gate.

Hiding just the follower count number

If your account is public and you want to stay that way, but you'd rather the raw number wasn't sitting there for everyone to judge, you have a partial option if you're on a professional account (business or creator).

  • Go to Settings and privacy
  • Tap Account type and tools, then Original settings or Edit profile depending on your app version
  • Look for "Hide follower and following counts" under your profile settings

This hides the number from your public profile for other people. You'll still see it yourself. It does not hide the lists if your account is public, it only hides the counter. People can still tap and scroll if they really want to know who's in there, unless the account is also private. Instagram has shuffled where this toggle lives more than once over the past couple of years, so if you can't find it, check under Settings, then Privacy, then look for Hide Information or search "hide follower count" in the settings search bar, which usually jumps straight to it.

A worked example

Say you run a boutique interiors brand on Instagram with 4,200 followers and you follow 1,100 accounts, a mix of suppliers, other designers, and a few personal friends. You're public because you want new clients to find you through hashtags and the Explore tab. You don't want a nosy competitor cross-referencing who you follow to work out your supplier list. In this case, going fully private isn't realistic, it would kill your discoverability. The right move is the business account route: hide the follower and following count number, keep the account public for reach, and accept that anyone determined enough can still open the following list and scroll. What you've achieved is removing the casual glance, not the determined snoop. That's a realistic, honest outcome, and it's usually enough.

What you cannot do

I want to be blunt about this because most posts on the topic dance around it. There is no setting, no app, and no "secret trick" that lets you keep a public account and hide your lists from everyone, including people who follow you. Any third-party app or browser extension promising this is either lying, scraping your data, or both. Instagram's own transparency pages and developer documentation confirm the platform does not offer granular list-level privacy on public accounts; it's a binary, public or private, when it comes to list visibility. If you see a tutorial claiming otherwise, it's selling you something or it's out of date.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The same binary logic shows up elsewhere on the platform. If you've ever wondered about turning off activity status on Instagram, it's the same pattern: Instagram gives you a toggle, not a custom rule set. You either show your activity status to everyone you message or nobody, there's no halfway list of trusted contacts. Instagram prefers simple binary settings over complex permission systems, probably because support tickets are expensive and nuance creates confusion. Once you accept that pattern, the whole app makes a lot more sense.

Close relationships don't fix this either

People sometimes think the Close Friends list for Stories will also filter who sees your followers and following tab. It won't. Close Friends only controls who can view Story content you post to that list, it has zero effect on your main followers or following list visibility. Don't confuse the two features, they live in completely different parts of the app and serve different jobs.

If you're worried about being watched rather than counted

Quite often the real anxiety behind "how do I hide my followers" isn't about the list at all, it's a broader worry about being watched or tracked by a specific person. If that's your actual concern, the fix usually isn't the followers list, it's elsewhere in your settings. For instance, if you're wondering whether someone can see what you've been looking at, it's worth reading Can People See Your Instagram Search History? and Can People See When You Look at Their Instagram Highlights?, because those cover the actual tracking mechanics people worry about when they say they want to "disappear" from someone's radar. Similarly, if you've been tagged in a friend's Story and you're not sure who else can see that you were mentioned, that's answered separately in Can Instagram Followers See Who Mentioned You in a Story?. Solve the real worry, not the symptom.

What to do, step by step

  • Decide if your priority is discoverability or privacy; you can't maximise both
  • If privacy wins, go private in Settings, Privacy, Account privacy
  • If you need to stay public for business reach, switch to a Professional account and hide the follower and following count under Account type and tools
  • Audit who already follows you if your worry is a specific person, not strangers in general, since a private account won't block people already inside
  • Ignore any app or site promising full list concealment on a public account; it doesn't exist and the ones claiming it usually want your login credentials

If you're running a business account and wrestling with these settings as part of a bigger social strategy, it's worth stepping back and asking whether your Instagram setup is supporting your business goals at all, which is where real AI consultant for small business support earns its keep, auditing not just privacy toggles but the whole content and growth system around them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hide my followers list from only some people?

No. Instagram doesn't offer a selective, person-by-person hide option for your followers and following lists. It's a binary setting tied to whether your whole account is public or private, not a customisable list like Close Friends.

Does going private hide my list from people who already follow me?

No. A private account only blocks non-followers from seeing your lists. Anyone already approved as a follower can still view who you follow and who follows you unless you remove or block them individually.

Will hiding my follower count also hide the actual list?

No, those are separate settings. Hiding the count removes the number shown on your public profile, but the follower and following lists themselves remain visible to anyone who taps into them unless your account is private.

Is there an app that hides my Instagram followers for me?

No legitimate one exists. Any app or website promising to hide your followers list on a public account is either outdated, misleading, or asking for your login details, which puts your account at real risk.
