Most of the time, X (formerly Twitter) images not loading is down to your browser cache, a shaky connection, or a temporary glitch on X's end. Clear your cache, check your connection, try a different browser or the app, and if nothing works, wait it out. It is rarely anything you have done wrong.
Why This Happens
Images not loading on X (formerly Twitter) is one of those problems that crops up now and then, and it is almost never something you have broken. It is usually a mix of browser issues, connection problems, or X having a wobble on its servers.
Before you panic or start uninstalling things, it is worth knowing that this tends to sort itself out within a few minutes to a few hours. But there are things you can try in the meantime.
Check It Is Not Just You
First thing I do is check whether this is a wider problem or just affecting my device. Open X on your phone using mobile data instead of wifi. If images load fine there, the issue is with your home connection or your browser, not X itself.
You can also ask someone else to check their feed. If they are seeing the same blank boxes where images should be, it is likely a platform-wide issue and there is nothing you personally can do except wait.
Clear Your Browser Cache
This fixes more image loading problems than anything else I know of. Your browser stores old versions of pages and images to load things faster, but sometimes that cache gets corrupted or out of date and causes images to fail.
- Open your browser settings
- Find the privacy or history section
- Choose to clear cached images and files
- Restart your browser
- Log back into X and check your feed
Do not clear your cookies at the same time unless you are happy to log back in everywhere. Just target the cache.
Try a Different Browser
If clearing the cache does not help, try opening X in a completely different browser. If you normally use Chrome, try Firefox or Edge instead.
This helps you work out whether the problem is specific to one browser's settings or extensions, rather than X itself. I have seen ad blockers and privacy extensions block image loading without any obvious warning, so this step also rules that out.
If images load fine in the second browser, go back to your usual one and start disabling extensions one by one until you find the culprit.
Check Your Extensions and Ad Blockers
Ad blockers, privacy tools, and some VPN browser extensions can interfere with how images load on social media sites. They are not doing anything malicious, they are just being overly cautious about what content gets loaded.
Go into your browser's extension manager and disable them one at a time, refreshing X after each one. This takes a bit of patience but it is the most reliable way to find out if an extension is the cause.
Update or Reinstall the App
If you are using the X app rather than a browser, outdated app versions can cause all sorts of display problems, including images refusing to load.
- Check your app store for pending updates
- Update the app if one is available
- Restart your phone
- If images still will not load, delete the app and reinstall it
Reinstalling clears out any corrupted local data the app might be holding onto, which is often enough to fix the problem on its own.

Check Your Connection and Device
Sometimes it really is as simple as a weak connection. Images are data heavy compared with plain text, so a poor signal or slow wifi can mean text loads but images do not.
Try switching between wifi and mobile data to see if one works better than the other. Also worth restarting your router if wifi has been patchy generally, not just on X.
Storage space on your device matters too. If your phone is nearly full, apps sometimes struggle to render new content, including images.
When It Is X, Not You
Sometimes none of the above works because the problem sits with X's own servers. This happens during high traffic periods, during updates on their end, or during unannounced outages.
There is no fix you can apply from your side in this situation. I would check a site that tracks service outages to see if others are reporting the same issue around the same time. If so, the only sensible thing to do is wait.
I cannot tell you exactly how long these outages last because it varies every time, sometimes minutes, sometimes most of a day. Checking back periodically is really the only option.
Frequently asked questions
Why are images not loading on X but text is fine?
Images need more data and processing than text, so a weak connection, full cache, or browser extension can block them specifically while text still comes through fine. Try clearing your cache first, then check your connection strength.
Does logging out and back in fix image loading issues?
Sometimes, yes. Logging out clears your session and forces X to reload your account data fresh. It is quick to try and worth doing before more involved fixes like clearing cache or reinstalling the app.
Can a VPN cause images not to load on X?
Yes, some VPNs route traffic in a way that blocks certain content types, including images, especially on free or restrictive VPN services. Try disabling your VPN temporarily to see if that resolves it.
How do I know if the problem is with X and not my device?
Check X on a different device or network, such as mobile data instead of wifi. If images still fail there, or others report the same issue, the problem is likely with X's servers rather than your setup.
