If X (formerly Twitter) videos have no sound, check your phone's mute switch and in-app sound icon first, then test another video to see if it's a one-off. Most cases come down to muted settings, low volume, autoplay rules, or a slow connection rather than a broken app.
Why X Videos Have No Sound
Video sound issues on X (formerly Twitter) are common, and most of the time it has nothing to do with the app being broken. Videos on the platform often autoplay muted by default, especially in feeds, so you don't disturb people scrolling in public.
On top of that, your phone might have a physical mute switch flipped, your media volume might be turned down separately from your ringer volume, or the app's own sound setting might be switched off. Once you know where to look, fixing it usually takes seconds.
Below I've laid out eight fixes, starting with the quickest checks and moving to the more technical ones.
1. Check Your Phone's Mute Switch and Volume
This sounds basic, but it's the most common cause. On an iPhone, check the physical mute switch on the side. If it's flipped, all app sounds, including video sound, get silenced.
On Android, check your media volume specifically, not just your ringtone volume. Many people turn up the ringer and assume everything is loud, but media volume is a separate slider in most settings menus.
- Press the volume buttons on the side of your phone while a video is playing
- Make sure the volume bar shown is for media, not ringtone
- Check the physical mute switch if you have an iPhone
2. Tap the Sound Icon on the Video Itself
X (formerly Twitter) shows a small speaker icon in the corner of most videos. If it has a line through it, the video is muted at the app level, regardless of your phone volume.
Tap it once to unmute. This resets each time you open a new video in some cases, so you may need to do this more than once per session.
If tapping doesn't seem to do anything, close the app fully and reopen it, then try again.
3. Check In-App Sound Settings on X
The X app has settings that affect whether videos play with sound automatically. Go into your account settings and look for accessibility or media options.
There's usually a setting related to sound on autoplay videos. If this is switched off, every video you scroll past will be silent until you manually tap to unmute it.
Turning this on won't guarantee every video has sound, since some uploaders post silent clips or add captions instead of audio, but it removes one layer of the problem.
4. Update the App
An outdated app version can cause playback bugs, including missing audio. This is more common than people expect, particularly after X pushes a new update and some users are slow to install it.
Go to your phone's app store, search for X, and check if an update is available. Install it, restart your phone, and test a video again.
If you're on desktop using a browser, this doesn't apply in the same way, but keeping your browser updated matters just as much, which I'll cover shortly.
5. Check Your Phone's Do Not Disturb or Focus Mode
Some Focus modes and Do Not Disturb settings on phones silence media audio alongside notifications, depending on how they're configured.
Open your phone's settings and check whether a Focus mode is currently active. If it is, either turn it off or check its settings to see if media sound is being blocked.
This is easy to overlook because the phone still makes other sounds normally, just not always video playback in certain apps.
6. Test on Desktop Instead
If the problem only happens on your phone, try opening the same video in a browser on a computer. This helps you work out whether the issue is with your phone, the app, or the specific video itself.

On desktop, check your computer's volume mixer. Windows and Mac both let you control volume per application, so it's possible your browser has been muted separately from your system volume.
- Right click the speaker icon in your taskbar (Windows) or check Sound settings (Mac)
- Look for a per app volume control
- Make sure your browser isn't muted specifically
7. Clear Browser Cache or Try a Different Browser
On desktop, a build up of cached data can cause media playback problems, including no sound on videos. Clear your browser's cache and cookies, then reload the page.
If that doesn't help, try opening the same video in a different browser entirely. If sound works there, the issue is with your original browser's settings or an extension interfering with playback.
Ad blockers and privacy extensions sometimes block audio elements without you realising, so temporarily disabling them is worth a try.
8. Accept That Some Videos Simply Have No Audio
Not every muted video is a technical fault. Some people upload videos with no sound at all, either intentionally or by mistake on their end during editing or export.
If you've tried every fix above and one specific video still has no sound while others play fine, it's likely that particular clip was uploaded without audio. There's no setting on your end that can add sound to a video that was never recorded or uploaded with any.
I can't say with certainty why any single creator's video lacks audio, since that depends entirely on their upload, but if it's isolated to one clip, the fault sits with the file, not your phone or browser.

Frequently asked questions
Why do X videos autoplay without sound?
By default, many videos autoplay muted so they don't disturb people scrolling in public feeds. You usually need to tap the speaker icon on the video itself to turn sound on, and this may reset each time you open a new clip.
Why does only one video have no sound while others work fine?
If every other video plays sound normally, that specific clip was likely uploaded without audio in the first place. There's no fix on your end for this, since the file itself doesn't contain sound.
Does Do Not Disturb affect video sound on X?
Yes, some Focus modes and Do Not Disturb settings silence media audio alongside notifications, depending on how they're set up. Check your phone's Focus settings and turn it off or adjust it if this seems to be the cause.
Should I try a different browser if desktop sound isn't working?
Yes. Clear your cache first, and if that doesn't help, test the same video in a different browser. If sound plays there, an extension or setting in your original browser is likely blocking audio.
