You can download a working XML sitemap generator here for free, no signup needed. Paste your list of URLs into the box, click generate, and it builds a valid sitemap.xml file with the correct tags and structure Google expects. I use it for client sites when a CMS plugin is not available or breaks. It handles hundreds of URLs at once and the file downloads straight to your computer, ready to upload to your server's root folder.
This free XML sitemap generator turns a list of URLs into a valid sitemap.xml file you can download and submit to Google in under a minute. Paste your URLs below (one per line), choose your options, click Generate, and download the file. Nothing is uploaded anywhere: the whole tool runs in your browser, so it works for client sites, staging sites and anything private.
Paste your URLs below (one per line), or paste an existing sitemap.xml to clean and rebuild it.
What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a file that lists the URLs on your site you want search engines to know about. Google, Bing and other crawlers read it to discover pages they might otherwise miss, especially on new sites with few backlinks, large sites with deep pages, and sites whose internal linking is thin. The format is set by the sitemap protocol: a urlset element containing one url entry per page, each with a loc element holding the address.
When you actually need one
If your site has a handful of pages and solid internal links, search engines will usually find everything without help. A sitemap starts earning its keep when any of these is true: your site is new and has few links pointing at it, you have hundreds or thousands of pages, you publish often and want new pages discovered fast, or you have pages that are hard to reach through menus and internal links. I publish dozens of posts a day on this site, and the sitemap plus Search Console submission is a core part of how new posts get discovered quickly.
How to use this generator
1. Collect your URLs. Export them from your CMS, copy them from a crawl, or paste an existing sitemap.xml and this tool will pull the URLs out of it, remove duplicates and rebuild it cleanly.
2. Paste them in the box above, one per line. Invalid lines are skipped and counted, duplicates are removed automatically.
3. Pick your options. Keep lastmod on if the list reflects pages that are current today. Google ignores changefreq and priority, so leaving them off is fine.

4. Click Generate, then Download sitemap.xml.
5. Upload the file to your site's root folder so it loads at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.
Submitting your sitemap to Google
Open Google Search Console, choose your property, go to Indexing and then Sitemaps, enter the sitemap URL and press Submit. Google will report how many URLs it discovered from the file. Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools, which also feeds the AI answers in Copilot. Resubmitting after big site changes does no harm, and the lastmod dates tell crawlers which pages changed.

Frequently asked questions
Is this XML sitemap generator really free?
Yes, completely. There is no signup, no email capture and no limit on how many times you use it. Everything runs in your browser, so your URLs are never uploaded to any server.
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
The sitemap protocol allows up to 50,000 URLs per file, and the file must stay under 50MB uncompressed. If your site is bigger than that, create several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index file.
Do I need lastmod, changefreq and priority?
Only lastmod carries real weight, and only when it is accurate. Google has said it ignores changefreq and priority, so you can leave them out. Bing reads lastmod too.
Where do I upload the sitemap.xml file?
Upload it to your site's root folder so it is reachable at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, then submit that URL in Google Search Console under Indexing, then Sitemaps, and in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Does a sitemap guarantee my pages get indexed?
No. A sitemap helps search engines discover your URLs, but indexing still depends on the quality of each page and your site's authority. It is the invitation, not the decision.
If you want to see the structure of an existing site before building your sitemap, my free website mapping tool visualises any sitemap as a tree with depth statistics, which makes orphan sections easy to spot.
