2026 Update: What Has Changed Since I First Wrote This
I wrote the original version of this post back in 2021 and, honestly, some of it has aged well and some of it needed a serious rethink. The startup landscape in 2026 looks quite different. Funding is tighter, competition is sharper, and the tools available to founders have shifted dramatically. So before you scroll down to the original tips, I want to give you my honest, current take on what actually matters right now if you are launching or scaling a business this year.
The biggest shift I have seen working with founders in 2026 is that AI is no longer a nice-to-have, it is baked into the baseline. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are being used daily for everything from customer research to drafting investor decks. But here is the thing nobody tells you: the founders winning are not the ones using AI the most, they are the ones using it the smartest. Knowing when to trust the output and when to bin it entirely is a real skill, and it takes time to develop. Do not outsource your strategic thinking to a chatbot.
I am also seeing a real correction in the "build fast, break things" mentality. In 2021 we were still riding a wave of optimism about growth at all costs. In 2026, investors and customers alike want to see sustainability, not just scalability. If your business model only works when you are burning through cash, that conversation with a funder is going to go badly. Profitability pathways matter now in a way they simply did not five years ago.
Community building has become one of the most underrated growth strategies I recommend to any startup founder. Organic social reach has declined across most platforms, paid ads are expensive, and trust in brands is at a low. But a tight, engaged community around your product or service? That is genuinely difficult to replicate and extremely valuable. Whether you build that on a newsletter, a Discord group, or a private membership, start early and treat it seriously.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
One more thing worth saying plainly: the basics from 2021 still apply. Know your customer. Watch your cash flow. Do not skip market validation because you are excited about your idea. I have updated some specific points throughout this post where the advice needed refreshing, but the fundamentals of building a solid business have not changed as much as the headlines suggest. Read the original tips with that in mind.
