To report someone on Discord, right-click the message on a computer or press and hold it on your phone, choose Report Message, pick the type of violation and submit. To report a profile, open its three-dot menu and choose Report User Profile. Discord says your identity isn't shared with the person you report.
Reporting on Discord is built around evidence. Rather than reporting a person in general, you report the specific message or the specific part of their profile that breaks the rules, and Discord's safety team reviews that. Once you know this, the process is quick, and your report is far more likely to lead somewhere.
This guide follows Discord's Safety Center article on reporting abusive behaviour. It covers reporting a message, reporting a profile, what happens after you press submit, and what to do when something is too serious to wait.
Report a message on Discord
Most reports start with a message. Discord's steps work the same in servers and DMs:
- On a computer, right-click the message. On a phone, press and hold it.
- Select Report Message.
- Choose the type of violation from the list.
- On the next screen, pick the specific policy it breaks, then submit.
If you choose the wrong category, Discord says you can go back and change your first answer before you send it, so don't worry about getting it perfect on the first tap.
Report someone's Discord profile
Sometimes the problem isn't a message but the profile itself, such as an offensive username, picture or bio. Discord lets you report those parts directly:
- Open the person's profile.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Report User Profile.
- Tick which parts of the profile you're reporting. You can pick more than one.
- Choose the type of violation, then the exact policy on the next screen, and submit.
What happens after you report someone on Discord
Here's what Discord's Safety Center says about the review:
- Your identity isn't shared with the account you reported, even if they appeal. The exceptions Discord names include valid legal process and DMCA requests.
- Review times depend on how serious the report is. Discord targets high-harm reports, such as child safety or imminent harm, for review within 24 to 48 hours, and lower-harm reports such as harassment within about a week. Complex cases can take longer.
- Not every report leads to action. Discord says it'll tell you if it finds a policy violation, and may point you to safety features that could help.
If you'd like a comparison, Instagram works on a similar review system, which I've covered in my guide to how long Instagram takes to review a report.
Reporting illegal content on Discord from the EU
If you live in the European Union, there's an extra route for illegal content under the Digital Services Act. Discord's Safety Center says you can use a web form at discord.com/report after a short verification step. To report a message that way, you'll need its link: right-click the message on a computer, or press and hold it on a phone, and choose Copy Message Link, then paste it into the form. For everyday rule-breaking, the in-app report is still the quickest option.
Reporting someone on Discord in a server you're part of
If the trouble is happening inside a server, you've got two routes, and I'd usually use both. Discord's article points out that you can contact the server's moderators, who may be able to respond straight away, for example by removing the message or the person. Then report the content to Discord too, because moderators can only act inside their own server, while Discord can act on the account.
| Situation | What to do on Discord |
|---|---|
| Rude message in a server | Tell the moderators, and report the message if it breaks Discord's rules |
| Harassment in DMs | Report the messages, then block or ignore the person |
| Offensive username or picture | Report User Profile and tick the parts involved |
| Threat of violence or someone in danger | Contact local law enforcement, then report |
Protecting yourself after reporting someone on Discord
A report doesn't stop someone contacting you while it's being reviewed. Discord's article reminds you that you can ignore or block any user to limit how much you hear from them. After you submit a report, Discord's ignore help says you'll also see an Ignore option in the More you can do menu, which hides their messages and activity without telling them.

Reporting on Discord when you run a community
If you run a server for customers, students or fans, you'll see reports from both sides: members telling you about problems, and you reporting accounts to Discord. A few habits make it smoother:
- Post clear rules and tell members how to reach the moderators.
- Ask members to report rule-breaking messages to Discord themselves, as well as flagging them to you.
- Keep a private log of what happened and what action you took.
- Never pile on. Discord warns against false or malicious reports, repeat reports about the same issue and asking others to report the same content.
When it's too serious to wait for a Discord report
Discord's own guidance is clear: if there's a credible threat of violence, or someone is in immediate danger, including someone who may be thinking about harming themselves, contact local law enforcement. Report it to Discord as well, but don't wait for a review before getting help. If you're in danger, contact the police.
If someone has taken over your account, that's a different problem with its own steps, so head to Discord's help centre and search for the hacked account article.
