To find someone on Snapchat, tap the magnifying glass, type their name or username and tap + Add. Their username works best because display names repeat. If they don't appear, Snapchat's privacy settings may be hiding them: teens are hidden from search without an existing connection, and anyone can switch off Find Friends.
Finding a friend on Snapchat should take seconds, yet it often turns into scrolling past a dozen people with almost the same name. The trick is knowing which of Snapchat's search routes suits the situation: a username you've been given, a phone number in your contacts, a code on someone's screen, or a name you spotted in a Story.
I'll take you through each one using Snapchat's help centre, then cover why some people simply won't show up. That second part matters, because much of the time that's Snapchat's privacy protection working as intended, especially for teenagers.
Find someone on Snapchat by name or username
If you know their username, this is the most reliable route, since usernames are unique and display names aren't.
- Tap the magnifying glass at the top of the screen.
- Type the person's name or, better, their exact username.
- Tap + Add next to the right result.
If several people share a display name, ask your friend for their username. It saves you adding a stranger by mistake.
Find people on Snapchat from your phone contacts
This works for people whose phone number is saved in your contacts and linked to their Snapchat account.
- Tap your Bitmoji or Story icon at the top to open My Account.
- Tap Find friends on Snapchat.
- Go to your device Settings and choose how much contacts access to allow.
- Tap + Add next to anyone you want to add.
You choose the access level in your phone's settings, so you're in control of how much of your address book Snapchat can see.
Add someone on Snapchat with their Snapcode
When you're standing next to the person, a Snapcode is the fastest option and avoids any spelling mix-ups.
- Ask your friend to open Snapchat and tap their profile icon so their Snapcode shows.
- Open Snapchat on your phone and point the camera at their Snapcode.
- Press and hold on the Snapcode to scan it.
- Tap Add Friend.
For a small business or creator, your own Snapcode is a neat thing to show at events or put on printed material, so customers can scan rather than search.
Find Friends on Snapchat (the feature that used to be Quick Add)
If you remember Quick Add, it's still there under a new name. Snapchat's help article says Quick Add has been renamed Find Friends, to make clear it's for connecting with people you know in real life. Its suggestions can appear on the Chat screen, the Add Friends screen or in Search. Tap Add or Accept to add someone, or tap the X to hide the suggestion.
Prefer not to be suggested to others? Snapchat says all users can turn off showing up in Find Friends in Settings.
Other ways to find someone on Snapchat
- From a Story mention: open the Story, swipe up on the featured Snap and tap +Add.
- On a computer: sign in to Snapchat for Web, open the Add Friends panel from the Chat screen, search by name or username and click + Add.
- From a Public Profile: subscribing to someone's Public Profile works differently from friendship, and my guide to what followers mean on Snapchat explains the difference.
Why you can't find someone on Snapchat
Privacy is built into search, so a missing result doesn't always mean you've done something wrong. According to its help pages:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Accounts are private by default, and friend lists are visible only to their owner.
- Teens are hidden from search results unless there's already a connection, such as mutual friends or each other's numbers in contacts.
- The person may have turned off showing up in Find Friends.
- They may have blocked you, or their account may have been deleted.
Snapchat also says it can't share information about other Snapchatters, so support won't tell you why a particular person isn't appearing. If the search finds them but adding fails, my guide on why you can't add someone on Snapchat goes through the causes, from the friend limit to adding too quickly.
Finding people on Snapchat safely
For parents, this is reassuring. Snapchat's help pages describe extra checks for teen accounts: friend requests to or from teens with no mutual friends can be delayed and reviewed, and teens see a warning when they message someone they share no friends or contacts with. It's worth talking through these settings with your teen together.
Search exists to help you connect with people you know, not to locate people who'd rather not be found. A few safety points from Snapchat's help centre are worth knowing:
- Non-friends can only message you if they're at least 18.
- Your Contact Me setting lets you choose between Friends and Contacts or Friends only.
- Public Profiles are limited to users 16 and older.
- You can block, hide or report anyone who makes you uncomfortable.
If someone you don't know keeps trying to reach you, block them on Snapchat and report the account. If you're ever threatened or in danger, contact the police as well.
