Why Can't I Add Someone on Snapchat? Every Cause and Fix

You can't add someone on Snapchat because they've blocked you, deleted their account, you've reached your friend limit, or you've added friends too quickly, according to Snapchat's help centre. Check your connection first, then log out and back in. If they've blocked you, there's no workaround.

You search for a name, tap Add, and nothing happens, or the person simply isn't there. It's a frustrating one, especially when you're trying to reach a customer, a collaborator or a friend who's just given you their username. Snapchat's help centre has a short troubleshooting article for this exact problem, and it names a handful of causes. Here they are in the order I'd check them, with the fix for each and what the help pages leave unsaid.

The reasons you can't add someone on Snapchat, in order

According to Snapchat's troubleshooting article on adding friends, the first thing to do is check your internet connection and try both wifi and mobile data. After that, there are four named causes:

  1. The person has blocked you. The article gives no workaround, and you can't add someone who has blocked you.
  2. The person deleted their account. A deleted account can still appear in the app for a while. Log out of Snapchat and log back in to clear it.
  3. You have too many friends. Snapchat says to remove old friends to make room for new ones.
  4. You added friends too quickly. Wait and try again later.

That's the full list in the help article. If you can't see the person at all, the cause is usually the first or second one, but I can't tell you which from the outside, and neither can Snapchat's help pages.

Check you're finding the right Snapchat account first

Before assuming something's wrong, make sure you're searching correctly. Snapchat's article on how to add friends lists several routes, and if one fails another often works:

  • By name or username: tap the magnifying glass, enter the name or username, then tap Add next to the result.
  • By Snapcode: ask your friend to open their profile so their Snapcode shows, point your camera at it, press and hold to scan, then tap Add Friend.
  • From your contacts: tap your Bitmoji or Story icon, then Find friends on Snapchat, and tap Add next to a contact.
  • From a Story that mentions them: open the Story, swipe up on the featured Snap and tap Add.
  • On Snapchat for Web: use the person-with-a-plus icon on the Chat screen to open Add Friends, then search.

Menus vary by app version, so a button might be labelled slightly differently on your phone. A single wrong letter in a username is the most common reason a search comes up empty, so double-check the spelling with the person if you can.

What to do if you think you've been blocked on Snapchat

The help centre says you can't add someone who has blocked you, and it doesn't describe anything that tells you it's happened. So the honest answer is that you can't be certain from a failed search alone. A deleted account, a misspelt username and a block can all look similar from your side.

If you're trying to work out whether someone has removed you rather than blocked you, that's a different question, and my guide on how to tell if someone removed you on Snapchat goes through what the app shows. The best approach is to ask the person another way, by text or email, and ask them to send you a fresh request.

Why a friend limit stops you adding someone on Snapchat

The troubleshooting article says that if you have too many friends, you need to remove some to add more. It doesn't give a number, and I won't guess one, because other sites quote different numbers. If your friend list is long, go through it, remove people you no longer talk to, and try adding the new person again.

For small businesses using a personal account to talk to customers, this is worth knowing. If a personal account is your main way of staying in touch, keep the list tidy so there's always room for a new contact.

Adding people too quickly on Snapchat

The help centre says that adding friends too quickly can stop further requests, and the advice is to wait and try again later. The article doesn't say how long. It's easy to hit this when you're adding a whole group in one sitting, such as colleagues or a class, so space them out. If you've been tapping Add on dozens of suggestions, stop, close the app and come back later.

Who can contact you, and why it's different from who you can add

People often confuse two things. Adding a friend is about sending and accepting requests. The Contact Me setting is about who can send you Snaps and chats. According to Snapchat's help on who can contact you, you choose between Friends, and Friends and Contacts, where people in your phone's contacts can also reach you. The option to accept contacts from everyone is no longer available, except for creator and business accounts.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If you set it to friends only, Snapchat says you won't see Snaps sent by people who aren't friends, and you'll just get a notification that they added you. Group members can still message you in group chats. So if someone says they added you but you can't see their Snaps, this setting is the likely reason. The person you want to add isn't affected by your setting in the way you might expect, but it's worth knowing the two are separate.

Quick fixes before you try to add someone on Snapchat again

  1. Check your connection and switch between wifi and mobile data.
  2. Log out of Snapchat and log back in.
  3. Update the app from your phone's app store.
  4. Remove a few old friends if your list is long.
  5. Wait a while if you've added several people in a row.
  6. Ask the person to add you instead, so the request goes the other way.

The first three are general fixes rather than steps from Snapchat's article, but they take a minute each. The last one is handy, because the Added Me section on the Add Friends screen shows people who've added you.

When you can't add someone on Snapchat and nothing works

If every step above fails, the likeliest answers are a block or a deleted account, and neither can be fixed from your end. At that point, stop and contact the person another way. If the issue is with your own account, Snapchat's support pages are the place to report it. Keep your messages polite and brief, because you can't be sure what's happened.

If your Snaps are failing too, my guide on why Snapchat isn't sending Snaps covers the other common faults. And if you're curious how friends differ from people who follow you, I've explained what followers mean on Snapchat. You might also want to see how to hide your Snap Score once you've added everyone.

Yes. Ask them to show their Snapcode from their profile, point your camera at it, press and hold to scan, then tap Add Friend.
