To make a WhatsApp call link, open the Calls tab, tap the + icon, create a call link and send it. Since WhatsApp added guest calling, anyone can join from their computer browser without a WhatsApp account: they type their name and wait in a waiting room until you admit them. Guests can share their screen but can't see phone numbers, send messages or add people, and calls are end-to-end encrypted.
For a lot of business owners, the one thing that stopped WhatsApp being a client-call tool was simple: the other person had to have WhatsApp. Some clients do, plenty of others live in email and a calendar invite. That gap has now closed. WhatsApp has added guest calling, so you can send a call link to anyone and they can join from a computer browser without an account.
I've written this guide from Meta's own announcement, so the steps match what WhatsApp says rather than guesswork. You'll find how to make the link, what your guest sees, the controls you keep as the host, and a few messages you can copy to send with the invite.
What is WhatsApp guest calling?
Guest calling lets a WhatsApp user invite people to a WhatsApp call even when those people don't have a WhatsApp account. Meta describes the result as free, end-to-end encrypted calls for everyone, with no time limits.
There's one rule that matters before anything else: only someone with a WhatsApp account can create a call link. So you, as the host, need WhatsApp. Your guests don't.
For a small business, that changes who you can reach with a quick call. A supplier who refuses to install another app, a client who only uses a work laptop, a freelancer in another country: they can all join from a link.
How do I make a WhatsApp call link?
WhatsApp lists four steps:
- Open the Calls tab in WhatsApp.
- Tap the + icon.
- Choose to create a call link.
- Send the link to the people you want on the call.
You can send the link anywhere you'd normally send a message: email, a text, a booking confirmation, a direct message on another platform or a line in your proposal. Because the guest doesn't need WhatsApp, it doesn't matter where the link travels.
I'd always send the link together with the time, the reason for the call and what the guest needs to have ready. It saves a lot of "which link was it again?" on the day.
How does a guest join without WhatsApp?
Meta says guests can open the link in their computer browser, type in their name and wait to be admitted. That's it. There's no account to create and nothing to install.
Once they're in, guests can share their computer screen, react with a thumbs up or a heart, and raise their hand. Screen sharing is the one I care about for business: a client can show you the spreadsheet, the website or the error message they're stuck on, rather than describing it.
Tell your guest to use their name as you know it when they join. You'll be admitting people from a waiting room, and a clear name makes that easy.
What control do I keep as the host?
This is the part that makes guest calls safe enough for client work. According to WhatsApp:
- Anyone joining as a guest always needs the host's approval.
- Guests wait in a waiting room until the host admits them.
- The host can remove a guest from the call at any time.
- Guests can't see other participants' phone numbers.
- Guests can't send messages or add anyone else to the call.
That last pair is worth underlining. If you run a group call with your own team and a client joins as a guest, the client won't see everyone's numbers. That's a real worry for small teams who use personal phones for work, and it's handled.
How many people can join a WhatsApp guest call?
Group calls on WhatsApp support up to 32 people, and Meta says guests count toward that number once they're admitted. For most small business calls, from a two-person consultation to a team briefing with a couple of outside guests, that's plenty.
If you're planning something bigger, such as a webinar or a live class, a dedicated webinar tool is still the better fit. My guide to running a webinar on Google Meet is a good place to compare.
Is a WhatsApp guest call private?
Meta says these calls are end-to-end encrypted. In plain terms, that means the content of the call is protected between the people on it. You still control who gets in through the waiting room, so the main risk is the link itself being forwarded.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Two simple habits help. Don't post a call link in a public place, and admit only names you expect. If someone unknown appears in the waiting room, leave them there.
Five ways a small business can use guest calls
- Discovery calls with new leads. Send the link in your booking confirmation so nobody has to download anything before they've decided to work with you.
- Quick screen-share support. Ask a client to share their screen so you can see what's going wrong in their account, document or website.
- Supplier check-ins. Many suppliers live in email. A link gets them onto a call in a minute.
- Interviews and trial shifts. Candidates join from a browser, and you control the waiting room.
- Team calls with an outside guest. Keep your team's numbers hidden while a freelancer or adviser joins for one agenda item.
Messages to send with your call link
A good invite saves you a no-show. Here are three short messages you can copy and adapt. If you'd like AI to write variations in your own voice, paste one into ChatGPT or Claude with the prompt underneath.
Copy this prompt
Hi [name], here's the link for our call on [day] at [time]: [link].
You don't need WhatsApp. Open it on your computer, type your name and I'll let you in.
If you'd like to show me [the document or screen], you'll be able to share your screen once you're in.
Copy and paste this prompt
Write three short, friendly messages I can send with a video call link to a new client.
My business: [what you do]. The call is for [purpose] and lasts [length].
Each message must say they don't need an app, they join from a computer browser, and they should type the name I know them by.
Keep each one under [number] words and match this tone: [paste a message you've sent before].
If you use a business account, it's worth pairing call links with automatic replies in WhatsApp Business, so anyone who messages outside your hours gets the link to book a call.
What's coming next: calendar invites
Meta has said calendar integration is on the way. The plan it describes is a WhatsApp plugin for Google Calendar or Outlook Calendar: you connect your WhatsApp account, add a WhatsApp call link to an invite, and the people you invite can join with or without a WhatsApp account. It isn't available yet, so for now, paste the link into the invite yourself.
Tools that work with WhatsApp guest calls
You don't need anything extra, but a few tools make the routine smoother. A booking tool such as Calendly, Acuity Scheduling or TidyCal can carry the call link in its confirmation email. Google Calendar and Outlook hold the link until the calendar plugin arrives. For notes, Notion, Google Docs or Otter make it easy to capture what was agreed, and ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini can turn rough notes into a tidy follow-up email.
If your calls are part of a bigger plan for how you sell and support clients, this is how I work with business owners.
