What Does Aura Mean? Slang, Aura Points and Examples

In slang, aura means a person's coolness or charisma, often counted in imaginary aura points. Smooth moves gain aura and clumsy ones lose it. Wikipedia's glossary of Gen Z slang describes it as a person's current reputation or charisma, and people use it as a light joke in texts and comments.

If someone comments that your outfit has plus aura, or your nephew announces he's lost aura points for tripping over the doormat, you've met one of the stranger bits of slang to land on social media. It sounds mystical, but the idea's simple and quite fun once you've seen it in action. I keep an eye on how my audience talks because the words people use tell you what they find impressive, embarrassing or funny. Here's what aura means, where it comes from, how people use it and whether it belongs anywhere near your business account.

Aura meaning in plain English

In slang, aura is a sort of running score of someone's coolness. Wikipedia's glossary of Generation Z slang describes it as a person's current reputation or charisma. Do something smooth and you gain aura, or aura points. Do something clumsy or cringeworthy and you lose some. Nobody's keeping a real tally, which is the joke, but people do like to announce the result.

The older, spiritual meaning of the word still exists, so context matters. A medium talking about someone's aura means a glow or energy around them. A teenager saying you've got aura means you carried yourself well. If the message sits in a comment section or group chat, it's nearly always the slang one.

The story behind aura and aura farming

Wikipedia's article on aura farming says the phrase was popularised in 2024, largely around anime characters and celebrities, and describes aura farming as cultivating an appearance of effortless charisma, often through repeated actions meant to look cool. The same article treats aura as close to rizz, but notes that rizz carries romantic overtones that aura doesn't. Wikipedia's slang glossary cites a BuzzFeed piece from 2024 describing aura points as viral Gen Z slang.

I can't give you an exact first use, and I haven't found a dictionary source that does, so treat any tidy origin story with caution. What the sources agree on is that it spread through short video, where a calm, confident moment can be shared and scored in seconds.

Aura in the wild: chats, Reels and comments

The most common patterns are easy to spot:

  • Plus aura or minus aura, to rate a moment out of nowhere, as in plus aura for holding the door open.
  • Aura points, gained or lost, usually announced with a straight face.
  • Aura farming, for someone who seems to be working a little too hard at looking effortlessly cool.
  • Low aura or high aura, as a quick description of a person, an outfit or a bit of video.
  • A single word in a comment, such as a lone capital letter A and the word, under a clip of someone doing something impressively calm.

You'll see it on TikTok and Instagram Reels most, often over edits of films, sport or someone walking into a room with great timing. In Snapchat and WhatsApp it's more personal, a way of ribbing a friend.

A few sample aura lines

These are invented to show the tone. None are real messages:

  • Example: "Carried four coffees without spilling one. Plus aura."
  • Example: "Waved at someone who wasn't waving at me. Minus aura, I'm afraid."
  • Example (comment on a video): "The way he just walked off without looking back. Pure plus."
  • Example: "Dad parallel parked first time and now he's insufferable. Aura farming at its finest."
  • Example: "That presentation had so much aura, even the projector behaved."

Notice that it's rarely cruel. Losing aura is a gentle tease, the sort of thing friends say to each other, and that's why it travels so easily.

Is aura safe for brand accounts?

Aura is easy to overuse and easy to get wrong, so here's how I'd think about it as a marketing consultant.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

When it can work: on a lighthearted account aimed at teenagers and people in their twenties, in a short video that's already funny. A bakery showing a baker flipping a tray perfectly, captioned plus aura, is relatable and easy to try. Pair it with sensible hashtags that work on TikTok and Instagram so the right people find it.

When it backfires: a brand announcing its own aura looks like it's trying too hard, which is exactly what the slang makes fun of. It's also a poor fit for serious services, such as law, health or finance, and for audiences who've never heard it. Slang ages quickly, so a post that's clever now can look dated in a few months.

A fair test is to ask whether your audience would say it themselves. If you're not sure, watch how they talk in comments first. The same tip applies when you plan a trending hashtag approach for Facebook Reels: see what's real before you copy it.

Replying gracefully to an aura joke

  • If it's praise, thank them lightly and don't overexplain: "Ha, I'll take it."
  • If it's a tease about losing aura, own it with humour: "Fair, I'll earn it back."
  • If a customer says your product has aura, treat it as a compliment and say thanks.
  • If you don't follow the reference, ask. Most people enjoy explaining their slang to a parent or a boss.

What I'd avoid is firing back with a long list of your own aura points. It kills the joke.
