To stop WhatsApp saving photos, open Settings, tap Chats and turn off Media visibility on Android or Save to Photos on iPhone. To do it for one chat only, tap the contact or group name and change the same setting there. It only affects new photos, not ones already saved.
If your phone's gallery is full of memes from the family group, good morning images and screenshots of other people's shopping lists, you're not alone. WhatsApp saves incoming photos and videos to your phone by default on Android, and depending on your settings it can do the same on iPhone. For small-business owners it's worse, because customer photos, supplier documents and product shots end up mixed in with your personal pictures. The fix is quick, and you can do it for every chat or just the noisy ones.
Two places WhatsApp decides whether photos get saved
| Setting | Android name | iPhone name | What it controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| App-wide switch | Media visibility (Settings, then Chats) | Save to Photos (Settings, then Chats) | New photos and videos from every chat |
| Per-chat setting | Media visibility in Contact info or Group info | Save to Photos in Contact Info or Group Info | New photos and videos from one person or group |
The per-chat setting wins for that chat, so you can turn saving off everywhere and back on for, say, your partner, or leave it on and switch off one loud group.
Stop WhatsApp saving photos to the Android gallery
WhatsApp's help centre calls this Media visibility. When it's on, downloaded photos and videos show up in your phone's Gallery.
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap More options (the three dots), then Settings.
- Tap Chats.
- Turn off Media visibility.
Stop saving media from one WhatsApp chat on Android
- From the Chats tab, open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the contact or group name at the top to open Contact info or Group info.
- Tap Media visibility, choose No, then tap OK.
Stop WhatsApp saving photos to the iPhone Photos app
On iPhone, the setting is called Save to Photos on WhatsApp's stop-saving help page. Another WhatsApp help page still calls it Save to Camera Roll, so menus vary by app version. Either label does the same job.
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings or your profile picture.
- Tap Chats.
- Turn off Save to Photos (or Save to Camera Roll).
Stop saving media from one WhatsApp chat on iPhone
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap the contact or group name to see Contact Info or Group Info.
- Tap Save to Photos and choose Never.
WhatsApp lists three options here. Default follows your app-wide setting, Always saves everything from that chat, and Never stops saving from that chat.
What turning off photo saving on WhatsApp doesn't do
- It doesn't delete photos already in your gallery. It only affects new media from that point on, so you'll still want to clear out older pictures by hand.
- It doesn't remove the photos from the chat. You can still open and view them inside WhatsApp.
- It doesn't change what other people see. It's a setting on your phone only.
One catch worth knowing: WhatsApp's help centre says that if a downloaded photo is no longer on your device, it can't be downloaded again, and you'd need to ask the sender to send it again. So if a photo matters, save it on purpose rather than relying on the chat.
View once photos and videos are a separate case. WhatsApp says they aren't saved to your camera roll at all, whatever your settings say.
Keeping business photos out of your personal WhatsApp gallery
Here's how I'd set it up if you use one phone for both. Turn saving off app-wide, then switch it to Always only for the chats where you need every image kept, such as a supplier sending stock photos or a client sending artwork for approval. Everything else stays in WhatsApp, where you can find it in that chat's media section when you need it.
If you manage a busy customer group, this matters even more, because group photos pile up quickly. My guide on creating a WhatsApp group covers the group settings worth choosing at the start.

Picking the right WhatsApp photo saving setup
- You hardly ever want WhatsApp pictures kept: turn the app-wide switch off and leave every chat on Default.
- You want most things kept except one or two noisy groups: leave the app-wide switch on and set those groups to No (Android) or Never (iPhone).
- You use one phone for home and work: switch it off app-wide, then set the few chats you rely on to Yes or Always.
- You share your phone with a child or a colleague: switching saving off keeps chat photos out of the gallery they might scroll through.
Whichever you pick, it's worth checking again after a big app update, because WhatsApp has renamed these options before.
If WhatsApp still saves photos after you switch it off
- Check the per-chat setting. A chat set to Yes on Android or Always on iPhone will keep saving even when the app-wide switch is off.
- Remember it only affects new downloads. Photos that arrived earlier will still be in your gallery.
- Update WhatsApp if you can't find the setting, because the menu names have changed between versions.
- On iPhone, also check your phone's own privacy settings for WhatsApp's access to Photos.
Big media folders also slow down backups, which is one of the things I cover in my guide to slow WhatsApp backups.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp save photos automatically?
On Android, WhatsApp's help centre says Media visibility is turned on by default, so downloaded photos appear in your Gallery. On iPhone it depends on your Save to Photos setting.
Will turning off Media visibility delete my existing WhatsApp photos?
No. It only affects new photos and videos. Anything already in your gallery stays there until you delete it.
Can I stop saving photos from just one WhatsApp group?
Yes. Open the group, tap the group name, then set Media visibility to No on Android or Save to Photos to Never on iPhone.
Can I still see the photos in the chat?
Yes. Turning off saving only keeps them out of your phone's gallery or Photos app. They're still in the WhatsApp chat.
Why can't I open an old WhatsApp photo any more?
WhatsApp's help centre says that once a downloaded photo is no longer on your device, it can't be downloaded again. Ask the sender to send it again.
