How to Turn Off Read Receipts on WhatsApp (Blue Ticks Explained)

To turn off read receipts on WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Privacy, and switch off Read receipts. People will see grey ticks instead of blue when you've read their messages. It doesn't apply to group chats or voice message plays, and you'll stop seeing other people's read receipts too.

Blue ticks put pressure on people. The moment you open a message, the sender knows, and a reply clock starts ticking in their head. For busy business owners that's a recipe for answering everything instantly and getting nothing else done. Turning read receipts off takes a few seconds, but it comes with trade-offs that WhatsApp spells out in its help centre, and it doesn't work everywhere. Here's how to do it on each device and what you give up in return.

Turn off WhatsApp read receipts on iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings or your profile picture.
  2. Tap Privacy.
  3. Turn off Read receipts.

Turn off WhatsApp read receipts on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots (More options) at the top.
  2. Tap Settings, then Privacy.
  3. Turn off Read receipts.

Switch off WhatsApp read receipts on the web and desktop app

  1. Click Settings.
  2. Click Privacy.
  3. Turn off Read receipts.

WhatsApp's help pages describe the same Settings, then Privacy path for the web and desktop versions. Menus vary by app version, so if the toggle isn't where you expect, look for the Privacy section first and the setting should be close by.

What the WhatsApp ticks mean once receipts are off

According to WhatsApp, the ticks next to a message mean:

  • One grey tick: sent.
  • Two grey ticks: delivered to the recipient's phone or one of their linked devices.
  • Two blue ticks: read.

With your read receipts off, people messaging you will see two grey ticks when you've opened their message, not blue ones. That's the whole point. They'll know it arrived, not whether you've looked at it.

The trade-offs of hiding WhatsApp read receipts

WhatsApp is upfront that this is a two-way switch. Here's what its help centre says you lose:

  • You won't be able to see read receipts from other people either. No blue ticks on your own sent messages.
  • You might not be able to see who views your status, and others may not be able to see when you view theirs.
  • It doesn't turn off read receipts in group chats. WhatsApp says read receipts are always sent for groups.
  • It doesn't turn off play receipts for voice messages. WhatsApp says there's no way to turn those off.

That status point surprises a lot of people. If you rely on status views to judge interest in your offers, switching receipts off can take that away. I've written about how WhatsApp status views work if that matters to you.

If what you really want is for a chat to stop catching your eye, you might prefer to tuck it away instead. I've covered the options in my guide on how to hide a WhatsApp chat.

Why someone's WhatsApp receipts might be missing

If you're on the other side wondering why your messages never turn blue, WhatsApp's help article lists several reasons that have nothing to do with you being ignored:

  • You or they might have turned read receipts off.
  • They might not have opened the conversation yet.
  • Either of you could be having connection problems.
  • When someone gets a message from you for the first time, a read receipt might not be sent.
  • The date and time settings could be wrong on one of the phones.
  • They might have blocked you. WhatsApp includes this in the list, but it's only one possibility.

I've gone through the full set of signs in my guide to whether someone has blocked you, along with why none of them is proof on its own.

Should a business turn WhatsApp read receipts off?

There's no single right answer, but here's how I'd think about it. If customers message you and expect a quick reply, blue ticks with no answer can feel rude, and switching receipts off removes that awkwardness while you get to it. On the other hand, you lose the reassurance of knowing a client has read your quote or your booking details. Some people turn receipts off on a personal number and leave them on for business. A quick message like "I've seen this and I'll get back to you this afternoon" can do more for a customer relationship than any setting.

Checking who read your message with WhatsApp Message info

If your own receipts are on, you can see the detail for any message you've sent. On iPhone, tap and hold your sent message and tap Info. On Android, tap and hold it and tap the info icon, or More options and Info. On the web, open the message menu and click Message info. WhatsApp says this screen shows when your message was delivered, read or, for voice messages, played.

Frequently asked questions

Do read receipts turn off in WhatsApp groups?

No. WhatsApp says read receipts are always sent for group chats, even if you've turned them off.

If I turn off read receipts, can I still see if others read my messages?

No. WhatsApp says that if you turn off read receipts, you won't be able to see read receipts from others.

They'll see two grey ticks instead of blue ones. WhatsApp lists turned-off receipts as one of several possible reasons for that.
