To delete your Threads profile, open the Threads app, go to your profile, tap the menu and find Deactivation or deletion, either under Meta Account or under Account settings and Personal details. Choose Delete profile and confirm. Meta says it's permanent after 30 days, and your Instagram account isn't touched.
Threads launched as Instagram's sister app, and for a while the two were tied together so tightly that leaving one meant leaving both. That's changed. Meta's help pages now say you can delete your Threads profile without touching your Instagram or Facebook accounts, which is good news if you tried Threads, didn't get on with it and want a clean exit.
In this guide I'll walk you through the difference between deactivating and deleting, the steps Meta's help centre gives for each, what happens to your content and how long it all takes. Everything here comes from the official Threads pages on Meta's help centre. Menu names can shift between app versions, so if a label on your screen looks slightly different, follow the closest match. If you're still deciding whether the app is worth keeping for your business, my guide to how the Threads app works might help you decide first.
Deactivate or delete your Threads profile: which one you need
Meta gives you two ways out, and they're very different.
| Option | What happens | Can you undo it? |
|---|---|---|
| Deactivate | Your profile, posts and interactions are hidden until you come back | Yes, by logging back in |
| Delete | Your profile, content, likes and followers are permanently removed | Only during the 30-day window after your request |
If you just need a break, perhaps during a busy season or while you rethink your social media plan, deactivating is the gentler choice. If you're sure you're done with Threads, deletion is the one you want.
Before you delete Threads: save a copy of your information
Meta's deletion page suggests downloading a copy of your information before you delete, because once the deletion goes through you can't get it back. Threads has its own help page on reviewing and exporting your information, and it uses the same export tool as Instagram inside Meta's account settings.
- Open your Threads settings and look for the Meta account area, then your information and permissions.
- Choose the option to export your information and pick your Threads profile.
- Decide whether to save the file to your device or send it to an external service.
- Wait for Meta to prepare the file, then download it from the available downloads section before it expires.
For a business account, this is worth doing even if you never posted much. Your old posts can be useful for content ideas later, and it's a record of what you shared publicly.
How to delete your Threads profile in the app
Meta's help centre gives two routes, depending on whether the newer Meta account settings are available on your profile. Check which menu you see and follow that set of steps.
If Meta account settings are available to you:
- Open the Threads app and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu icon.
- Tap Meta Account, then Manage account.
- Select the Threads profile you want to remove.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion.
- Choose Delete profile, pick a reason and continue to confirm.
If you don't see Meta account settings:
- Open the Threads app and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu icon, then Account settings.
- Tap Personal details.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion.
- Choose Delete profile and follow the prompts to confirm.
Meta also notes that it can't delete a Threads profile for you. You'll need to be logged in to make the request yourself, so make sure you can get into the account before you start.
How to temporarily deactivate Threads instead
Deactivation lives in the same Deactivation or deletion area of your settings, so follow the steps above and choose the option to deactivate your profile rather than delete it. While your Threads profile is deactivated, Meta says your posts and your interactions with other people's posts won't be visible.
To come back, log in to Threads again. Your profile and content reappear, and nothing's been removed in the meantime.

What deleting Threads does to your Instagram account
This is the part people worry about most, so here's what Meta's help pages say:
- Deleting your Threads profile doesn't delete your Instagram or Facebook accounts.
- Deactivating your Threads profile doesn't deactivate your Instagram account.
- It doesn't work the other way round: if you deactivate your Instagram account, your Threads profile is deactivated too.
So if you want to step away from both, handle them separately. My guide on how to deactivate an Instagram account covers the Instagram side.
Threads deletion timing, cancelling and signing up again
- Meta says your profile, content, likes and followers are permanently deleted 30 days after you submit the request.
- You can cancel during those 30 days by logging back in to your Threads profile and confirming that you want to keep it.
- The full deletion process can take up to 90 days once it starts.
- After your Threads profile is deleted, you'll have to wait 90 days before you can sign up again with the same Instagram profile.
- Meta says copies of some information may stay in backup storage for a while after that, for disaster recovery.
That 90-day wait matters for businesses. If you think you might want Threads again in a few months, deactivating is the safer move.
If you shared Threads posts to the fediverse
Threads can share posts to the fediverse, a network of independent servers that talk to each other. If you'd turned that sharing on, deleting your profile switches it off and Meta asks other fediverse servers to delete your Threads profile and content. Meta's help page is clear that it can't guarantee those other servers will do so, so some copies may remain elsewhere.
Troubleshooting a Threads profile that won't delete
- You can't find Deactivation or deletion. Update the app, then check both the Meta account route and the account settings route above.
- You can't log in. Meta can't delete the profile on your behalf, so recover your Instagram login first, then try again.
- Your profile is still showing. Deletion isn't instant. It completes after the 30-day window, and full removal can take longer.
- You logged in by accident. Logging back in during the 30 days can cancel the request, so check your status and submit it again if needed.
- You only wanted to remove some posts. You don't need to delete the whole profile. Meta's help centre has a separate article on deleting a single post on Threads.
If you run Threads for a business and simply want tighter control rather than a full exit, it's worth reading my piece on whether the Threads app is safe for business before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
Does deleting Threads delete my Instagram account?
No. Meta's help centre says deleting your Threads profile doesn't delete your Instagram or Facebook accounts. Deactivating Instagram, however, also deactivates your Threads profile.
How long does it take to delete a Threads account?
Meta says your profile and content are permanently deleted 30 days after you submit the request, and the full process can take up to 90 days.
Can I get my Threads account back after deleting it?
You can cancel the deletion within 30 days by logging back in. After that, your content is gone and you'll need to wait 90 days to sign up again with the same Instagram profile.
What's the difference between deactivating and deleting Threads?
Deactivating hides your profile and posts until you log back in. Deleting permanently removes your profile, content, likes and followers once the 30-day window passes.
Should I download my Threads data first?
Yes. Meta suggests downloading a copy of your information before you delete your profile, because you can't retrieve it once the deletion is complete.
