WhatsApp has no Telugu setting of its own, because it uses your phone's keyboard. Add Telugu to your keyboard (Gboard on Android, or the built-in keyboard on iPhone), switch to it with the globe key, and type in Telugu script or in English letters that turn into Telugu.
That's the whole secret, and it means the same setup works in every app, not just WhatsApp. Once Telugu is added, your messages, group chats, captions and Status text all accept it. The person you send it to sees normal Telugu text, as long as their phone can show the script.
The only real decision is which typing method you want, so let's start there. After that you'll find the steps for Android and iPhone, then fixes for the problems people run into most.
Which Telugu typing method suits you?
There are four ways to write Telugu on a phone. I'd pick one as your main method and keep a second one for moments when the first is slow.
| Method | What you do | Suits you if | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telugu script keyboard | Tap the Telugu letters directly on the keys | You already read and write Telugu comfortably | The layout takes a few days to feel natural |
| Transliteration | Type Telugu words in English letters and pick the Telugu word from the suggestions | You think in Telugu but you're used to the English keyboard | The suggestion strip sometimes picks the wrong spelling, so glance before sending |
| Voice typing | Tap the microphone and speak | You have long messages or your hands are busy | Quiet places work best, and names can come out oddly |
| Handwriting | Draw each letter with your finger | You know the shapes but not the key positions | It's slower than the other three for long messages |
If you're not sure, start with transliteration. You'll type the way you already type in English, so there's almost nothing new to learn. If you want to write without suggestions, move to the script keyboard later.
Android: add Telugu to Gboard
Most Android phones use Gboard, the Google keyboard. These steps assume you do too.
- Open any chat in WhatsApp so the keyboard appears, then open Gboard's settings (tap the small settings icon on the keyboard toolbar, or open Settings on your phone and search for "Gboard").
- Tap Languages, then Add keyboard.
- Search for Telugu and select it.
- Choose the layout you want: Telugu script, Telugu transliteration (type in English letters, get Telugu), or handwriting.
- Tap Done.
Now go back to WhatsApp. Press the globe key on the keyboard to switch between English and Telugu, or hold the space bar for a moment and pick the language from the pop-up. If you added more than one Telugu layout, you'll see them listed there too.
A quick note on menus: apps change their labels now and then. If a name looks different on your phone, search the settings for the key word, such as "Languages" or "keyboard".
If your phone uses a different keyboard app, open its own settings and look for a languages section. The idea is identical. Our guide to WhatsApp keyboard settings on Android explains what the other toggles do, such as suggestions and auto-correct.
iPhone: add the Telugu keyboard
On iPhone, the Telugu keyboard is built in, so you don't need to download anything.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap General, then Keyboard, then Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard.
- Scroll to Telugu and tap it.
- Pick the layout if you're asked.
Open WhatsApp and tap into a chat. Press the globe key at the bottom left of the keyboard to cycle through your keyboards until Telugu appears. Hold the globe key to see the whole list at once.
Same reminder as above: if your version of iOS words something differently, use the search box in Settings and type "keyboard".
Voice typing and handwriting
Voice typing is the quickest way to write a long Telugu message. On Gboard, add Telugu as a language first, then tap the microphone on the keyboard toolbar and speak. On iPhone, tap the microphone key on the keyboard once Telugu is among your languages.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Speak in short sentences and read the result before you send it. Speech tools do well with everyday words and less well with names of people and places, so fix those by hand.
Handwriting is useful when you remember what a letter looks like but not where it sits on the keyboard. On Gboard, choose the handwriting layout when you add Telugu, then draw on the pad. It's slower, but it's a good way to learn.
People in the same family or friend group often write in several languages in one chat, and that's fine. If you also message relatives in other languages, the same setup works. I've written separate guides on typing Malayalam on WhatsApp and setting up a Marathi keyboard, and the steps are nearly the same.
Fixes for the common problems
Letters show as empty boxes
Boxes instead of letters usually mean the phone's font support is old, so it can't draw the Telugu characters. Update your phone's software first, then restart the phone and open the chat again. If a friend sends you Telugu and you see boxes, the same fix applies on your side.
The wrong Telugu word keeps appearing
That's the suggestion strip guessing. Transliteration works by matching the English letters you typed to likely Telugu words, so a slightly different spelling can give a different word. Try typing the word again with other English letters, or tap the exact word you want from the strip before pressing space.
The Telugu option isn't there when I press the globe key
Telugu hasn't been added to the keyboard you're using, or you added it to a different keyboard app. Open the keyboard settings again and check that Telugu has a tick next to it. On Android, make sure Gboard is your selected keyboard in the phone's language and input settings.
Auto-correct changes Telugu into English
Turn off auto-correction for your Telugu layout in the keyboard settings, or switch off the English dictionary while you write in Telugu. Mixed-language chats are where this happens most.
A few habits that help
- Pick one method for a week before you judge it. Typing always feels slow on day one.
- Keep English as your second keyboard so switching takes one tap.
- Read long messages once before you send them, especially after voice typing.
- Ask the other person if the text looks right on their screen when you first try it. It saves guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp have a Telugu language setting?
WhatsApp itself uses your phone's keyboard for typing, so the Telugu setup happens in your keyboard settings, not inside WhatsApp. Add Telugu to Gboard or the iPhone keyboard and it works in every chat.
Can I type Telugu using English letters?
Yes. Choose the Telugu transliteration layout on Gboard, or the transliteration option when you add the Telugu keyboard on iPhone. You type the word in English letters and tap the Telugu word from the suggestions.
Will the other person see Telugu text or boxes?
They'll see normal Telugu text if their phone supports the script. If they see boxes, their phone's software is probably old and updating it should fix the problem.
Can I use voice typing for Telugu in WhatsApp?
Yes. After you add Telugu as a language on your keyboard, tap the microphone on Gboard or the iPhone keyboard and speak. Check the text before you send it.
