TikTok came out internationally in September 2017. Its Chinese sister app, Douyin, launched on 20 September 2016. ByteDance bought musical.ly on 9 November 2017 and merged it into TikTok on 2 August 2018, bringing the two apps together under the TikTok name.
Last checked October 2026.
TikTok can feel as if it appeared overnight and took over everyone's phone at once. The real story is a little more tangled: there's a Chinese sister app, a separate lip-sync app called musical.ly, and a merger that brought them together. I've taken every date on this page from Wikipedia's TikTok article, so you can see exactly where each one comes from.
If you're a business owner or creator deciding whether TikTok is worth your time, knowing how young the app is helps. It's still changing fast, and that's both the opportunity and the challenge.
Douyin first: where TikTok began in China
TikTok is made by ByteDance. Before TikTok existed, ByteDance launched Douyin in China, and Wikipedia gives its launch date as 20 September 2016. Douyin is the Chinese version of the app, and it runs separately from TikTok.
A year later, ByteDance took the idea abroad. Wikipedia says TikTok launched in the international market in September 2017. It doesn't give an exact day, so September 2017 is the most precise answer you'll find from that source.
If you're comparing it with older apps, Snapchat had been around for years by then; my guide to the Snapchat release date gives the details.
TikTok and musical.ly: the merger that shaped the app
Musical.ly was a separate app where people made short lip-sync and music videos. Wikipedia says it was first released in August 2014, years before TikTok reached the rest of the world.
ByteDance bought musical.ly on 9 November 2017. Then on 2 August 2018, musical.ly was merged into TikTok. From then on, there was one app under the TikTok name. That merger is a big reason TikTok suddenly seemed to be everywhere in the West, and Wikipedia notes it became the most downloaded app in the US in October 2018.
TikTok release history at a glance
Each row below comes from Wikipedia's TikTok article.
| Date | What happened with TikTok |
|---|---|
| August 2014 | Musical.ly is first released |
| 20 September 2016 | ByteDance launches Douyin in China |
| September 2017 | TikTok launches in the international market |
| 9 November 2017 | ByteDance buys musical.ly |
| 2 August 2018 | Musical.ly merges into TikTok |
| October 2018 | TikTok becomes the most downloaded app in the US |
So if someone asks you when TikTok came out, the honest answer has two parts: September 2017 for TikTok outside China, and 2 August 2018 for the version most people in the UK and US first met after the merger.
How TikTok videos and features stretched beyond lip-sync
Musical.ly was mainly about music and lip-syncing. TikTok kept the music library and the vertical, full-screen format, but it grew into far more than that. Today you'll find tutorials, comedy, news explainers, cooking, small business behind-the-scenes clips and product demos.
Video length has stretched too. Wikipedia's article describes TikTok videos ranging from three seconds to 60 minutes. That's a long way from the short clips the app started with, and it means TikTok now competes with long-form platforms as well as short-form ones.

TikTok has also become a place people search. Plenty of people type questions into its search bar, which is why clear titles, captions and on-screen text matter. If you want to find something you watched earlier, my guide to finding your TikTok watch history shows where it's kept.
What TikTok's short history means for brands posting now
TikTok is the youngest of the big social apps, and that shapes how I'd approach it as a small business:
- Expect change. An app that's merged, grown and stretched its video length in a few years won't stand still. Check your settings and formats regularly.
- Lead with the first few seconds. The format came from quick music clips, and people still scroll fast. Get to the point straight away.
- Use sound on purpose. Music was part of TikTok from the musical.ly days. A trending sound can help, but clear speech helps more for how-to content.
- Write for search. Put the words people would type into your caption and on-screen text.
- Learn the creator programme rules before you plan around them. Read up on the follower rules for TikTok's creator programmes so you know what applies to your account size.
Most importantly, be yourself. TikTok rewards people who sound like real people, and small businesses often do better there than polished brands because of it.
How TikTok's age compares with older social apps
It helps to see TikTok next to the apps that came before it. These launch dates come from each app's Wikipedia article, listed in the sources for this page.
- Facebook: launched as TheFacebook on 4 February 2004.
- YouTube: founded on 14 February 2005, with its first video uploaded on 23 April 2005.
- WhatsApp: first released on 3 May 2009.
- Instagram: launched on the iPhone App Store on 6 October 2010.
- TikTok: launched internationally in September 2017, merging with musical.ly on 2 August 2018.
Put like that, TikTok arrived more than a decade after Facebook. It didn't have years of slow growth behind it; it inherited musical.ly's audience and went from there. For a small business, that's a useful reminder that TikTok's audience habits are still forming, and you can help shape how people in your niche use it rather than trying to catch up with rules set long ago.
TikTok, Douyin and musical.ly: clearing up the confusion
People mix these three up all the time, so here's the short version. Douyin is ByteDance's app for China, launched in 2016. TikTok is ByteDance's app for the rest of the world, launched internationally in 2017. Musical.ly was a separate app, released in 2014, bought by ByteDance in 2017 and merged into TikTok in 2018. That's why you'll still hear people call TikTok the app that used to be musical.ly.
