How to Turn Off Active Status on Messenger (Every Device)

To turn off active status on Messenger, open messenger.com, click your profile picture, choose Preferences, then Active status and switch the toggle off. On a phone, use the Facebook app: Menu, Settings and privacy, Settings, Active Status, then turn off Show when you're active. Do both to hide it fully.

Last checked October 2026.

That little green dot next to your profile picture tells people you're online right now. Sometimes that's handy. Other times you just want to read messages in peace, catch up on a client chat without starting three more, or scroll at midnight without anyone thinking you're free to talk. I've put these steps together from Messenger's and Facebook's own help pages, because the setting has moved around and it now lives in more than one place.

Where the Messenger active status setting lives

This is the part that trips most people up. Messenger and Facebook each have their own active status switch, and Facebook's help pages say turning it off in one doesn't automatically turn it off in the other. If you switch it off in Messenger but leave it on in Facebook, you might still appear active. To hide it fully, turn it off in both.

Messenger's help pages also say the setting isn't offered in every version of the Messenger phone app. If you can't find it on your phone, use Messenger on a computer or the Facebook app instead, both covered below.

Turning off active status on Messenger desktop

On messenger.com in a web browser, Messenger's help page gives these steps:

  1. Go to messenger.com and log in as usual.
  2. Click your profile picture in the bottom left corner.
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Select Active status.
  5. Click the toggle to switch it off.
  6. Click Save.

If you also use Messenger on a work laptop, repeat the steps there. It only takes a minute and saves you appearing online when you thought you were hidden.

Turning off active status for Messenger in the Facebook app

On an iPhone or Android phone, the Facebook app is the most reliable place to change it. Facebook's help page describes this path:

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap Menu.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy, then Settings.
  3. Scroll to the privacy section and tap Active Status.
  4. Switch off Show when you're active.
  5. Tap Turn off to confirm if Facebook asks.

On Facebook in a computer browser, select the Messenger icon in the top right, then the options button next to Chats. Click Active Status, use the toggle and click Save. Facebook's help pages say menu labels can vary between app versions, so the wording on your screen may be slightly different.

Messenger has plenty of other settings hidden away in menus like these. My round-up of lesser-known Messenger features covers the ones I find most useful.

What changes once Messenger active status is off

Facebook's help pages explain how the setting works both ways:

  • Others stop seeing your green dot. Friends and contacts won't see you as active or recently active in that app.
  • You stop seeing theirs. With active status off, you won't see when other people are active either. The sharing is mutual.
  • Messages still arrive. Turning it off doesn't stop anyone messaging or calling you. It only hides when you're online.

Facebook's help pages also note that a green dot on a business Page means something different from a person's active status, so you may still see green dots on Pages.

Why someone's Messenger active status may be hidden

Once you've turned yours off, you'll notice everyone else's green dots vanish too. That's expected. But if a particular person never shows as active, Facebook's help pages list a few reasons: they've turned off active status themselves, there's a short delay before the status updates, or that person has blocked you.

A missing dot alone isn't proof of a block. If you're trying to work out what's going on, my guide on how to tell if someone blocked you on Messenger walks through the other signs.

Turning Messenger active status back on

Follow the same steps and flip the toggle back on, then save. Remember to do it in both places if you switched it off in both. Your green dot will return, and you'll see other people's active status again.

Messenger active status tips for business owners

  • Set expectations. If customers message your Page, use your Page's automated replies so people know when you'll reply, rather than relying on a green dot.
  • Separate work and personal time. Switching active status off in the evening stops clients assuming you're available.
  • Check every device. If you use Messenger on a laptop and Facebook on your phone, review the setting on each one.
  • Hide it elsewhere too. Instagram has its own activity status setting. My guide on how to hide your online status on Instagram covers it.

Messenger active status and your account privacy

Hiding your green dot is a privacy step, but it doesn't make your account any harder to get into. While you're in the settings, it's worth spending five more minutes on the basics:

  • Use a strong, unique password for Facebook and Messenger.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication in Facebook's security settings.
  • Review where you're logged in and remove any phone or computer you don't recognise.
  • Ignore messages asking you to log in through a link, even if they look like they come from Facebook.

My guide on how to keep your Messenger account secure goes through each of these in more detail. Your active status choice is about who sees when you're online; security is about who can get in at all. Both matter, and they work best together.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn off active status for just one person on Messenger?

Facebook's help pages don't describe a per-person active status switch. Blocking someone stops sharing your active status with them.

If I turn off active status, can I still see when others are online?

No. Facebook's help pages say that with your active status off, you won't see other people's active status either.

Why do I still look active after turning it off in Messenger?

You may still have it switched on in the Facebook app. Turn it off in both Messenger and Facebook to hide it fully.

Does turning off active status stop people messaging me?

No. Messages and calls still arrive as normal. Active status only controls whether people see when you're online.

Can I turn off active status in the Messenger phone app?

Messenger's help pages say the setting isn't available in every version of the phone app. Use the Facebook app or messenger.com instead.
