Partly. When you leave a WhatsApp group, only the group admins are notified, and WhatsApp says you can't turn that notification off. Other members aren't sent an alert, but they can see your name and number in the group's Past members list for up to 60 days. Muting or archiving the group tells no one.
Last checked October 2026.
Most of us are in far too many WhatsApp groups. School parents, a committee you joined once, a networking group that's turned into a stream of promotions, the family chat that never sleeps. Leaving feels like it should be simple, but nobody wants a big announcement saying they've walked out. I've checked WhatsApp's help centre and blog so you know exactly who's told, what's left behind, and the quieter options if you'd rather stay put.
Who WhatsApp tells when you leave a group
WhatsApp's help page on exiting a group as a member says that when you leave, group admins will see a message that you left, shown with your name or phone number. It also says you can't turn that notification off.
Ordinary members aren't sent the same alert. WhatsApp's blog announced this change as part of a set of privacy features: instead of notifying the full group when someone leaves, only the admins are notified. So the people running the group will know; everyone else won't get a message about it.
Past members can still see you left the WhatsApp group
Here's the part many people miss. WhatsApp keeps a Past members list in the group info. After you leave, your profile name and phone number appear there, and your profile photo may show too, depending on your privacy settings. WhatsApp's help centre says group members can see your details in that list for up to 60 days after you leave.
Members can also open the group's member changes view, which shows recent updates such as people who left or were removed. Nobody gets a notification about it, but anyone curious enough to look can find out.
How to leave a WhatsApp group, step by step
The steps are short. From WhatsApp's help centre:
On a phone
- Open the group chat.
- Tap the group name at the top.
- Scroll down and tap Exit group.
- Choose Exit group to keep your chat history, or Exit and delete for me to remove the group from your Chats tab as well.
On WhatsApp Web or desktop
- Open the group, then click the group name.
- Click Exit group, then confirm.
- Or hover over the group in your chats list, open the menu and choose Exit group.
If WhatsApp offers to report the group as you leave, that's optional. Its help pages say reporting sends the last five messages to WhatsApp, and no one in the group is told.
Exit and delete a WhatsApp group: what happens next
Exiting and deleting are two separate steps. Exiting removes you from the conversation. Deleting removes the chat from your phone.
- Exit group: you stop getting messages, but the old chat stays on your phone so you can still scroll back through it.
- Exit and delete for me: the group disappears from your Chats list and its history is erased from your phone. WhatsApp's help page says a deleted group can't be restored.
- Other members aren't affected. Deleting only clears your copy. The group carries on for everyone else.
If you're an admin, it works a little differently. WhatsApp's help page for admins says that to delete a group for everyone, you must remove all the other members first. If you're the only admin and you leave, a member is chosen at random to become the new admin.
Mute or archive a WhatsApp group instead of leaving
If leaving feels too final, WhatsApp gives you two quieter options.
| Option | Who is told | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Exit group | Admins see that you left | You stop receiving messages; you appear in Past members |
| Mute | No one | Messages still arrive, without sound or vibration |
| Archive | No one | The chat moves out of your main list |
WhatsApp's help page on muting says you can mute a group for a set period. You'll still get the messages, but your phone won't buzz. You may still be notified if someone mentions you directly. To mute, open the group, tap the group name, then tap Mute notifications and pick how long.

Archiving hides the chat from your main list without deleting it. WhatsApp's help page says you won't be notified about archived chats unless you're mentioned or replied to. Together, mute and archive make a group almost disappear, and nobody knows.
Leaving a WhatsApp community and its groups
Communities work slightly differently. WhatsApp's help page on exiting a community says that when you leave a community, you also leave every group you're in that belongs to it. You can't leave the community announcements group on its own; you have to leave the whole community or mute the announcements group instead.
WhatsApp's safety guide says you can leave a community quietly, and only the admin will know. If you only want the noise to stop, muting the announcements group is the gentler route.
Leaving business WhatsApp groups politely
If you run a business group or community yourself, people leaving is normal, and admins will see it. I'd take it as feedback rather than a snub. Clear rules, useful posts and a good group name keep more people around, and my ideas on naming a business WhatsApp group can help with the last one.
If you're the one leaving a client or supplier group, a quick thank-you message before you go is a nice touch. And if you're moving your audience to a broadcast-style channel instead, my guide on whether you can see who viewed a WhatsApp channel explains what channel admins can and can't see.
Privacy questions like this crop up across WhatsApp. If you also post statuses, my guide on whether WhatsApp tells people about a status screenshot covers another common worry.
Frequently asked questions
Will the whole group see a message when I leave on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp's help pages say group admins see that you left. Other members aren't sent the alert, but they can see you in the Past members list for up to 60 days.
Can I leave a WhatsApp group without the admin knowing?
No. WhatsApp's help page says admins are notified and you can't turn that notification off. Muting or archiving is the only fully quiet option.
Does muting a WhatsApp group notify anyone?
No. Muting only changes your own notifications. Nobody in the group is told.
If I delete a WhatsApp group, does it delete it for everyone?
No. Deleting only removes it from your phone. An admin has to remove all members first to delete a group for everyone.
Can I rejoin a WhatsApp group after leaving?
You can rejoin if an admin adds you back, or through an invite link if the group shares one.
