ChatGPT Prompts for Interior Design: Copy and Paste Ideas

These ChatGPT prompts for interior design help homeowners and interior designers plan room layouts, choose colour palettes, brief mood board images, build materials checklists and write client proposals and social posts. Copy a prompt, paste it into ChatGPT (Claude and Gemini work too) and replace the [brackets] with your room, style and needs. Key tip: upload a photo of the room so the ideas fit the space you have.

Interior design is one of the places where ChatGPT surprises people. It won't replace a designer's eye, but it's very good at the thinking around it: asking how a room gets used, turning a vague feeling into a palette, and writing the brief, the checklist and the caption that follow.

I've written these for two groups: homeowners planning their own rooms, and interior designers who'd rather put less time into admin and more into design. ChatGPT can take image input and generate images, so several prompts ask you to upload a photo or create a visual. If you're planning a workspace, my piece on how a thoughtful home office changes the way you work pairs well with them.

Room planning and layout ideas

Give ChatGPT the shape of the room and how you live in it, and the ideas get far more useful.

Layout options for an awkward room

Copy this prompt

My [room] is roughly [dimensions] with [doors, windows, radiators, alcoves]. It's used for [activities] by [who].
Suggest three furniture layouts, saying where each main piece goes and how much walkway it leaves.

Plan around a photo of the room

Copy this prompt

I've uploaded a photo of my [room].
Describe what's working and what isn't in the current layout, then suggest four changes in order of impact, starting with ones that need no new furniture.

Zone an open-plan space

Copy this prompt

My open-plan [kitchen, living and dining] space needs zones for [activities].
Suggest ways to define each zone with rugs, lighting, furniture and colour, without building any walls.

More storage in a small room

Copy this prompt

I need more storage in a small [room] for [items].
Give me ten storage ideas ordered by how much floor space they save, mixing built-in and freestanding options.

A lighting plan in plain English

Copy this prompt

Help me plan lighting for my [room], used for [activities], mostly in the [morning or evening].
Suggest ambient, task and accent lighting, where each should go and what to put on dimmers.

Finding your style and colour palette

Name my style

Copy this prompt

Tell me which interior styles these have in common, describe each in a sentence, and suggest the one that ties them together.

Build a colour palette

Copy this prompt

Create a colour palette for a [room] facing [north, south, east or west] that feels [calm, cosy, fresh or dramatic].
Give a main wall colour, two supporting shades and an accent, and explain where to use each.

Blend two tastes

Copy this prompt

My partner likes [style] and I like [style].
Suggest a combined look for our [room] that keeps one signature element from each, with colours, materials and two key furniture pieces.

Refresh without redecorating

Copy this prompt

My [room] has [existing colours and furniture] that I'm keeping.
Suggest six changes using textiles, accessories, plants and art to shift it towards a [style] feel.

Mix textures and materials

Copy this prompt

For a [style] [room], suggest a mix of textures and materials for floors, upholstery, curtains and accessories.
Explain how to balance warm and cool finishes so the room doesn't feel flat.

Mood board briefs and room visuals

Write the brief first, then ask for the image. You'll get closer to what's in your head.

Mood board brief

Copy this prompt

Write a mood board brief for a [style] [room] for [client or me].
List the colours, materials, furniture shapes, lighting and art, plus one word that sums up the feeling.

Generate a room visual

Copy this prompt

Create a photorealistic image of a [room] in [style], with [main colours], [key furniture], [flooring] and natural light from [direction].
Show it from the doorway at eye level.

Redesign the room in your photo

Copy this prompt

Using the photo I've uploaded, create an image of the same room redesigned in [style].
Keep the windows, doors and room shape exactly as they are, and change only the furniture, colours and accessories.

Compare two directions

Copy this prompt

Create two images of the same [room], one in [style A] and one in [style B].
Keep the layout and camera angle identical so I can compare the looks side by side.

Give me the headline for each slide and a short caption to go with the post.

A week of posts

Copy this prompt

Write a week of social posts for my interior design business about [focus].
Mix a project story, a tip, a behind-the-scenes moment, a question post and a placeholder for a client quote.

How to get better answers for your rooms

  • Upload a photo. ChatGPT can take image input, so a photo of the real room gives it far more to work with than a description.
  • Give measurements and constraints. Room size, ceiling height, where the radiators sit and what you're keeping all change the answer.
  • Say who lives there. Children, pets, working from home and how often you host matter more than style words.
  • Change one thing at a time. When an image is close, ask for a single change and keep everything else the same.
  • Check sizes in real life. Measure before you order. An image is a direction, not a floor plan.
  • Keep client details private. Leave out names, addresses and anything personal when you paste notes in.

If you'd like your design team to build prompts like these together, this is how my AI workshops run.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT design a room for me?

It can suggest layouts, palettes, materials and styling ideas, and create images of how a room could look. Treat it as a design partner for ideas and planning, then check everything against your real measurements.

Can ChatGPT create interior design images?

Yes. ChatGPT can generate images, so you can ask for a room visual in a chosen style, or upload a photo of your room and ask for a redesigned version that keeps the windows and doors where they are.

What are good AI prompts for interior design?

The most useful ones describe the room's size, light, who uses it and the feeling you want. Prompts for layouts, colour palettes, mood board briefs and shopping lists give the most practical results.

How do interior designers use ChatGPT?

Many use it for the admin around design: discovery questionnaires, design briefs from call notes, proposal scope sections, client update emails and social media captions.

Can I upload a photo of my room to ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT accepts image input, so you can upload a photo and ask for layout feedback, styling ideas or a redesigned image of the same space.
