Claude vs ChatGPT: Which One Fits Your Business?

Claude (by Anthropic) and ChatGPT (by OpenAI) are both strong general AI assistants, so neither is better at everything. ChatGPT lists image generation, voice mode and custom GPTs as built-in tools. Claude adds an Excel add-in and Cowork for handing over multi-step tasks. Both have projects, memory and private chat options. Choose by the work you do most, and test both on the same real task.

The short version: Claude and ChatGPT side by side.

Almost every business owner I speak to asks me the same question sooner or later: should I be using Claude or ChatGPT? It's a fair question, and the honest answer is less dramatic than most of the headlines. Both are excellent general assistants. Both will draft your emails, summarise a long document and help you think through a problem. The differences that matter for a small business are in the features around the chat: how each one remembers your work, how it fits into the tools you already use, and how it handles your data.

So rather than crown a winner, I've laid out what each company says its tool does, where they overlap, where they differ, and how I'd decide for your business. Everything here comes from Anthropic's and OpenAI's own help pages, not from rumours or launch-day hype.

What's the difference between Claude and ChatGPT?

Claude is made by Anthropic. ChatGPT is made by OpenAI. Day to day, you talk to both in the same way: you type or paste something in, and you get a written answer back. Where they start to differ is in the extras each company has built around that conversation.

OpenAI describes ChatGPT as an assistant that can answer questions, draft and rewrite content, translate, reason through problems and use built-in tools such as web search, deep research, image generation, file and audio uploads, data analysis, voice mode, memory, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs.

Anthropic has put a lot of its recent effort into Claude doing work rather than just talking about it: Projects for keeping a body of work together, an Excel add-in, and Cowork, which takes on multi-step tasks such as producing formatted documents, organising files and pulling research together while you get on with something else.

Claude vs ChatGPT: side by side

Here's how the main features line up, based only on what each company publishes. Where a row says both, the detail still differs, so read the notes underneath.

What you needClaudeChatGPT
Workspaces for ongoing jobsProjects with their own files, instructions and memoryProjects that group chats, files and context
Standing instructionsInstructions for Claude, plus per-project instructionsCustom instructions in Personalization
Remembering you between chatsMemory, plus search of past chats on Pro and aboveMemory you can view, edit or delete
Chats that aren't savedIncognito chatsTemporary chats
SpreadsheetsClaude for Excel add-in, inside Excel itselfData analysis on spreadsheets you upload
Handing over multi-step workCowork tasks that keep running when you step awayScheduled tasks, one-off or recurring

Two things jump out. If images are a big part of your week, ChatGPT lists image generation as a core tool. If your week lives in spreadsheets, Claude's add-in works inside Excel itself rather than on a file you upload.

Which is better for writing?

This is the question I get most, and it's the one where I'd be wary of anyone who gives you a flat answer. Writing quality depends far more on what you give the tool than on which tool you pick. A vague request gets a vague draft from either of them.

What makes the bigger difference for a business owner is setting each tool up to sound like you. In Claude, that's Instructions for Claude for your whole account and project instructions for each client or offer. In ChatGPT, that's custom instructions. Put your tone, the words you never use and a couple of examples of your own writing in there, and both get noticeably closer to your voice.

My suggestion is simple: give both the same brief and judge the drafts yourself. Here's the brief I'd use.

Copy this prompt

You're writing for [business name], a [type of business] that serves [who you serve].
Write a [email / product description / social post] about [topic].
Tone: [plain and friendly / warm and expert / short and direct].
Words I never use: [list them].
Here are two examples of my own writing to match: [paste them].
Keep it under [length] and end with [the one thing the reader should do].

Which is better for running a small business?

Think about where your work already lives. If your business runs on Google or Microsoft documents, email and calendars, look at which connections each tool offers on the plan you'd be using. If your team needs to share a set of documents and instructions, both have Projects, and on Claude's Team plan you can share a project with colleagues and choose who can view or edit it.

If you want to hand over whole jobs rather than single answers, Claude's Cowork is built for that. Anthropic describes it as letting you describe an outcome, step away and come back to finished work. ChatGPT's scheduled tasks suit recurring jobs such as reminders and regular checks.

And if images, voice conversations on the move or custom GPTs are central to how you'd use AI, ChatGPT's tool list covers all three.

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for privacy?

Both give you controls, and both expect you to use them. In ChatGPT, you can turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings, Data controls, and use temporary chats that aren't saved to your history. In Claude, you can use incognito chats and switch memory off for a single chat or your whole account. On both companies' business plans, the defaults are stricter than on personal accounts.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Whichever you pick, the rule I give every client is the same: never paste in anything you wouldn't want someone else to read until you've checked the settings. I've covered the ChatGPT side step by step in my guide to whether ChatGPT is private.

How do I decide between them for my business?

Here's the shortcut I use with clients:

  • Mostly writing and thinking work: try both on the same three real tasks and keep the one whose drafts need fewer edits.
  • Lots of spreadsheets: look closely at Claude for Excel, because it works inside the workbook.
  • Lots of images or voice: ChatGPT lists both as built-in tools.
  • Whole jobs handed over: look at Cowork in Claude and scheduled tasks in ChatGPT.
  • A team sharing the same files and instructions: compare the team plans side by side, because sharing and admin controls sit there.

And here's a prompt to run in both, so you're comparing like with like on something you do every week.

Copy and paste this prompt

I run a [type of business] with [number] people.
Here's a real task I do every week: [describe it and paste the material].
Do the task. Then tell me in three bullet points what you'd need from me to do it better next time.

If you'd rather see every option before you settle, my guide to the right AI tool for each job sets out where the other assistants fit.

Tools that work with both

Most of the everyday business tools you already use can sit alongside either assistant. Anthropic lists connectors for Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, GitHub, Microsoft 365 and Slack, and Claude's add-ins cover Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook. On the ChatGPT side, OpenAI's custom GPTs can be given selected tools, and you can upload documents, spreadsheets and presentations straight into a chat.

Can I use both?

Yes, and plenty of business owners do. A sensible setup is one main assistant for daily work, with your instructions and projects set up well, and the other kept for a second opinion or for the jobs it handles better. What I'd avoid is spreading your instructions, files and memory across both and keeping neither in good shape.

If you'd like help choosing and setting up the right one for your team, rather than working it out by trial and error, this is how I work with business owners.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

Neither is better at everything. Both are strong general assistants. ChatGPT lists image generation, voice mode and custom GPTs as built-in tools, while Claude offers an Excel add-in and Cowork for multi-step tasks. Pick based on the work you do most.

Can Claude and ChatGPT remember previous chats?

Yes. Both have memory you can turn on, review and switch off. Claude can also search past chats on Pro and higher plans, and both offer chats that aren't saved to your history: incognito in Claude and temporary chats in ChatGPT.

Which is better for writing, Claude or ChatGPT?

It depends more on your instructions than on the tool. Set up custom instructions in ChatGPT or Instructions for Claude with your tone and examples of your writing, then give both the same brief and compare the drafts.

Do Claude and ChatGPT both have projects?

Yes. Both let you group chats, files and instructions into projects. On Claude's Team and Enterprise plans, projects can be shared with colleagues with view or edit permissions.

Can I use Claude and ChatGPT together?

Yes. Many business owners use one as their main assistant and keep the other for a second opinion or for jobs it handles better. Keep your main instructions and files in one place so it stays useful.
