No, Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way dedicated image tools do. It can build diagrams, charts and interactive visuals in the chat, save them as artifacts, and create chart image files when code execution and file creation are on. It can also read images you upload. For artwork, ask Claude to write a detailed image prompt and use it in a dedicated image tool.
I get this question from business owners all the time, usually just after they've asked Claude for a picture of something and got a very polite non-answer. So let me save you the confusion. Claude is brilliant at words, analysis and a surprising number of visuals, but it isn't a tool for making photos or artwork.
The rest of this guide covers what Claude can't make, what it can make instead, how to get the most out of those visuals, and how to get a polished image when you need one, with prompts you can copy.
Does Claude generate images?
Not in the way you probably mean. Anthropic says plainly that Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do. So if you type a request for a photo of a cosy coffee shop, a logo concept or a cartoon of your mascot, you won't get a finished picture back.
What Claude does instead is describe, plan and build certain kinds of visual from code and structured instructions, and that's a bigger category than most people realise.
Can Claude make images of any kind?
Yes, in a specific sense. Claude can build diagrams, charts and interactive visuals right inside the conversation, using HTML and SVG, which are the web's own formats for drawing shapes and text. Anthropic lists this as a beta feature on the web and desktop apps. The custom visuals don't show up on the iOS or Android apps, which is worth knowing if you work from your phone.
You ask for them in ordinary language, for example draw this as a diagram or chart this data. Once the visual appears, you can copy it as an image, download it as an SVG or HTML file, or save it as an artifact.
Artifacts are Claude's way of keeping things you've made. Anthropic describes them as persistent and shareable, covering tools, apps and documents as well as visuals. So a flowchart or a dashboard you build in a chat doesn't vanish when you close it.
There's also a file route. With code execution and file creation switched on, Claude can create files such as spreadsheets, documents, presentations and charts as image files. That's handy when you need a chart you can drop straight into a slide deck or a newsletter.
What visuals are useful for a small business?
- Flowcharts for a process, such as what happens from enquiry to invoice.
- Charts from your own data, such as sales by month or enquiries by source.
- Comparison tables and timelines for a proposal or a team update.
- Interactive explainers, such as a simple calculator or a clickable checklist.
- Org charts and customer journey maps for planning sessions.
None of these is a photograph, but they're often what a business owner needs more. A clear diagram in a proposal does more work than a generic stock image.
A tip from my own workflow: ask for the visual and the explanation together. A chart with no commentary leaves you to work out the story yourself, whereas a chart plus three plain sentences about what it shows is something you can drop straight into a client update or a team meeting. If the first version isn't right, say what to change, such as a clearer title, fewer colours or bigger labels, and Claude will rebuild it. It usually takes a couple of rounds to get a result you'd be happy to share.
Can Claude look at images?
Yes, and this is the flip side. Claude can view and analyse images you upload. You can give it a screenshot of a confusing dashboard, a photo of a handwritten whiteboard, a chart from a report or a competitor's flyer, and ask it to explain, summarise or critique what it sees. It reads images well even though it doesn't paint them. That makes it a good partner for improving visuals you've made elsewhere: upload your draft social graphic or slide and ask what's confusing, what's cluttered and what a first-time visitor would notice first. You get a quick, honest second opinion before anything goes public.
How do I get Claude to make a flowchart?
Describe the steps in plain order and say who does what. The more specific you are about the start and the end, the cleaner the result.
Copy this prompt
Draw a flowchart of how my business handles [process, for example a new customer enquiry].
The steps are: [list the steps in order].
Show decisions as questions with yes and no branches, such as [an example decision].
Use simple shapes, short labels and the colours [your brand colours]. Then tell me how to save it as an image.
How do I turn a CSV into a chart?
Export your data as a CSV file, upload it to the chat and say what you want to learn from it. Ask for a chart you can save as an image file.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Copy and paste this prompt
I'm uploading a CSV of [what the data is, for example monthly sales by product].
First, tell me in a few lines what you can see in the data and flag anything that looks wrong or missing.
Then create a [bar / line] chart that shows [the comparison you care about], with a clear title and labelled axes.
Save the chart as an image file I can put in a presentation.
What if I need a real photo or illustration?
Use a dedicated image tool for the picture itself, and use Claude for what it's good at, which is writing the instructions. Image tools respond well to detailed descriptions, and a detailed description is something Claude can write in seconds. Tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Canva all offer image features, so take the prompt you get from Claude and try it in whichever one you already use.
Copy this prompt
Write me a detailed prompt for an AI image tool.
The image is for: [where it will be used, for example a blog header or a social post].
The subject is: [what should be in it].
The mood and style are: [for example bright, friendly and uncluttered], using the colours [your colours].
Include the format, such as [square or wide], and list a few things to avoid, such as [text in the image, extra fingers, cluttered backgrounds].
Give me three different versions to try.
Two cautions. Check any image you generate carefully before using it for your business, because AI image tools can get details wrong. And if the image shows a real product, a real person or a real place, use your own photograph instead.
Tools that work with Claude for visuals
A good everyday combination is Claude for the thinking and the diagrams, a design tool such as Canva for finishing touches, and an image tool for any artwork. Claude's presentation and document add-ins can also help you turn its charts into slides. If you're still deciding which assistant belongs at the centre of all this, my guide to the alternatives to Claude compares them honestly, and if you enjoy playing with image tools, my Gemini photo edit prompts show what a dedicated image tool can do.
If you'd like help building an AI toolkit that covers words, data and pictures for your business, this is how I work with business owners.
Frequently asked questions
Does Claude generate images?
Not photos or illustrations. Anthropic says Claude doesn't generate them the way image-generation tools do. It can build diagrams, charts and interactive visuals using HTML and SVG, and create chart image files when code execution and file creation are on.
Can Claude make images like diagrams and charts?
Yes. Ask it to draw something as a diagram or chart your data. You can copy the result as an image, download it as an SVG or HTML file, or save it as an artifact. Custom visuals are a beta feature on web and desktop.
Can Claude AI generate images for logos or social posts?
Not finished artwork. A better approach is to ask Claude to write a detailed image prompt, then paste it into a dedicated image tool such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Canva.
Does Claude have image generation on the phone app?
Custom visuals don't render on the iOS or Android apps. Build them on the web or desktop app, where Anthropic lists the feature as a beta.
Can Claude read images I upload?
Yes. Claude can view and analyse images you upload, such as screenshots, charts, handwritten notes and flyers, and explain or critique what's in them.
