Why Is Telegram Not Downloading Files?

The short version: Telegram stops downloading files for one of five reasons, nearly always something boring: full storage, a dodgy connection, a paused download you forgot about, an app cache that's gone rotten, or auto-download settings quietly switched off. Work through them in that order and you'll fix it in under ten minutes, no reinstalling, no drama.

I use Telegram every day for work, mostly for sending large files to collaborators who can't be bothered with Dropbox links, and the "file won't download" problem has hit me more than once right before a deadline. It's never mysterious once you stop panicking and look at what's happening on the screen in front of you.

Start with the obvious: is your phone or laptop full?

This is the fix nobody wants to hear because it's not glamorous, but it's the single biggest cause. Telegram needs somewhere to put the file. If your phone has 200MB of storage left and someone sends you a 1.2GB video, the download will start, stall, and sit there spinning forever with no error message at all. Telegram is weirdly bad at telling you this is what's happening.

  • On iPhone: Settings, General, iPhone Storage. If you've got less than 1GB free, that's your problem.
  • On Android: Settings, Storage, and check what percentage is used. Above 95% full is a red flag.
  • On desktop: check your C drive or home folder has at least a few GB spare, especially if Telegram's local cache has been growing unchecked for months.

Say you run a small content team and someone sends you raw footage through Telegram because it's quicker than a shared drive. If your laptop is sitting at 98% storage because you never clear your downloads folder, that 4K file is never landing, no matter how many times you tap retry.

Check your actual connection, not just the wifi icon

A full signal bar doesn't mean a working connection. Telegram downloads over your active internet connection, and large files need sustained bandwidth, not just a working ping. If you're on a train, in a lift, or on hotel wifi that's been throttled because forty other guests are streaming Netflix, the download will start and then hang at some percentage, usually somewhere between 40% and 80%, and just sit there.

Quick test: open a browser and try loading a heavy webpage or watching a few seconds of a YouTube video. If that struggles too, it's your connection, not Telegram. Switch from wifi to mobile data or vice versa and try again.

Look for a paused download you've forgotten about

This one catches people out more than they'd admit. Telegram lets you pause a download by tapping the circular progress icon, and it's easy to do this by accident while scrolling. The file then sits there indefinitely, looking stuck, when it's simply paused.

Go into the chat, find the file, and tap directly on the download icon or progress circle. If it shows a pause symbol rather than a download arrow, that's your answer. Tap it again to resume.

Clear the cache, not just "restart the app"

Restarting Telegram fixes almost nothing. What works is clearing the local cache, because Telegram stores a surprising amount of temporary data and on older phones this can corrupt or bloat to the point where new downloads simply fail silently.

  • Go to Settings, Data and Storage, Storage Usage.
  • Tap "Clear Cache" or choose specific media types to clear.
  • This does not delete your messages, only the locally stored media, so it's safe.

I've seen this single step fix a stubborn download problem faster than anything else, and it takes about 30 seconds.

Check auto-download settings haven't been switched off

Telegram has granular control over what downloads automatically by file type, size, and network (wifi versus mobile data). If someone, possibly you, previously turned off auto-download for videos over a certain size to save data, that setting quietly persists and files larger than the threshold simply never download unless you manually tap them.

Go to Settings, Data and Storage, Automatic Media Download. Check both the wifi and mobile data sections. If "Videos" or "Files" is capped at something small like 10MB, any file above that limit won't auto-download, and if the manual tap isn't registering either, that setting combined with weak connection is usually the real culprit.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

A worked example

Say you run a small PR agency and a client in another time zone sends you a 650MB video file through Telegram at 11pm your time. You wake up, open the app, and the file shows 0% with a spinning icon that never moves. Here's the actual sequence to run through:

  1. Check phone storage first. Free up space if under 1GB available.
  2. Switch from wifi to mobile data and back again to force a fresh connection attempt.
  3. Tap the download icon directly to check it isn't paused.
  4. Clear cache in Data and Storage settings.
  5. Check auto-download limits aren't capping you below 650MB.

In most cases it's step one or step five. Those two account for the vast majority of "stuck download" complaints, and both are entirely preventable if you keep an eye on storage and settings rather than assuming the app itself is broken.

The uncomfortable bit nobody writing about this wants to say

Telegram markets itself as the app for sending large files fast, and for small to medium files it is quick. But it's not built as a file transfer tool, it's a messaging app with file sharing bolted on, and it shows under pressure. Files over 2GB, Telegram's stated cap, simply won't go through at all, and even under that limit, large files are far more prone to failing silently than on a purpose-built service like WeTransfer or a shared cloud drive. If your business relies on moving big files reliably between people, routing that through Telegram because it feels convenient is a false economy. Use it for chat and quick exchanges, use a real file transfer tool for anything that matters to a deadline.

When it's still not working

If you've gone through all five fixes and the file still won't download, try these before giving up:

  • Ask the sender to resend the file. Sometimes the upload on their end was corrupted or interrupted.
  • Try downloading on a different device logged into the same account, if the file fails on mobile but works on desktop, it points to a device storage or settings issue rather than Telegram itself.
  • Update the app. Telegram pushes bug fixes regularly, and an outdated version can cause download failures that newer versions have already patched.
  • Log out and back in, as a last resort, which refreshes your session without deleting your chat history (it's stored on Telegram's servers, not just locally).

If I'm advising a client on which business tools to trust for anything mission critical, file transfer is always one of the first things I flag, because the apps people default to for convenience aren't always the ones built for reliability. If you want a real look at which tools deserve a place in your workflow, that's exactly the kind of practical audit I cover when working as an AI consultant for small business setups where tool choice quietly affects how fast teams get work done.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Telegram download say 0% and never move?

This is almost always a connection or storage issue. Check your device has enough free space first, then switch networks to force a fresh connection attempt, and tap the file directly to check it isn't paused.

Is there a file size limit on Telegram?

Yes, Telegram caps individual files at 2GB for free accounts. Anything above that simply won't upload or download no matter what you try, so you'll need a different tool for very large files.

Does clearing Telegram's cache delete my messages?

No, clearing cache only removes locally stored media like photos and videos that have already downloaded to your device. Your actual chat history stays safe on Telegram's servers.

Why do files download fine on wifi but not mobile data?

Check your automatic download settings under Data and Storage, since Telegram lets you set separate size limits for wifi and mobile data, and files above the mobile data limit won't auto-download even if your connection is strong.
