Is Snapchat Down? How to Check and Fix It (2026)

If Snapchat won't load, first check whether other people are reporting the same problem. If they are, the fault is on Snapchat's side and all you can do is wait. If nobody else is affected, it's almost always your connection, an out-of-date app or a stuck cache, and the quick fixes below sort most cases.

The fastest test is to ask one friend to open Snapchat and send you a snap. If it arrives, the service is up and the problem sits on your phone. If they can't send either, you've probably found a real outage.

Check whether it's down for everyone

Before you change any settings, spend a minute finding out whether you're alone. There's no point resetting your phone if the fault is at Snapchat's end.

  • Snapchat Support on X. The company's support account usually posts when something big breaks and again when it's fixed. Check its latest posts, not the pinned ones.
  • Outage-report websites. Search for "Snapchat outage" and open any of the sites that collect user reports. A sudden spike in complaints is a good sign of a wider fault. A thin trickle usually isn't.
  • Friends and family. Ask two or three people on different networks. If it fails for all of them, it's not your phone.
  • Other apps on your phone. If Instagram or a web page won't load either, your Wi-Fi or mobile signal is the problem, not Snapchat.

One thing I'd say about outage-report sites: they only count what people report, so a small fault in one country can look like nothing. Treat them as a hint, then confirm with a friend.

Quick fixes on your phone

If it looks like the problem is only on your side, work through these in order. Stop as soon as Snapchat behaves.

  1. Test your connection. Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way round, and see if a web page loads. A weak hotel or school network often blocks apps that look fine otherwise.
  2. Close the app completely and reopen it. Swipe Snapchat away from your recent apps, wait a few seconds, then open it again.
  3. Restart your phone. It sounds boring, but it clears small glitches that stop the camera, the network and the app from talking to each other.
  4. Update Snapchat. Open the App Store or Google Play, search for Snapchat and update it if the button says so. An old version can stop working when Snapchat changes something on its servers.
  5. Clear the cache. In Snapchat, tap your profile picture, open Settings and look for the option to clear cache. It removes temporary files, not your saved Memories, but read the wording on the screen before you confirm.
  6. Log out and log in again. Only do this if you know your password or can reach the email or phone number on the account. Otherwise you could lock yourself out.

App menus change from time to time. If a menu name looks different on your phone, open Snapchat's settings and search for the word, such as cache or log out.

Specific problems and what to try

Snaps won't send

A snap that sits on "sending" or shows a red or failed mark usually means a weak connection. Switch networks, tap the snap to retry, and if it still fails, save the photo or video to your phone and try again in a few minutes. If a friend's snaps and chats have vanished completely, check that you haven't blocked them by mistake. Here's how to unblock someone on Snapchat if you need it.

You can't log in

First, check you're typing the right username or email, and that caps lock is off. If Snapchat says there have been too many attempts, wait and try again later rather than guessing over and over. If you've forgotten the password, use the reset option on the login screen. Don't use any third-party "login helper" apps or websites. They aren't from Snapchat, and they're a quick way to lose your account.

Stories won't load

Stories are heavy on data, so they're often the first thing to fail on a poor connection. Pull down to refresh, try Wi-Fi, and if only one person's story won't play, it may simply have expired or been removed. If nobody's stories load, that points back to an outage.

The camera shows a black screen

Check that Snapchat has permission to use the camera in your phone's own settings. Make sure no other app, such as a video call, is holding the camera. Close both apps, then reopen Snapchat. If it's still black after a restart, update the app.

What happens to your streak during an outage

A streak depends on the two of you sending snaps to each other within the usual window. If Snapchat itself is down, you can't send, and that's out of your hands. I can't promise a lost streak will come back, because that's Snapchat's decision. What I'd do is note the date, wait until the service is steady again, then contact Snapchat Support from the help section in the app and explain what happened.

When to give it time

Most outages are fixed without you doing anything. If you've checked that others are affected, the best move is to stop tapping, close the app and try again later. Repeated logins and reinstalls can make things worse, and an uninstall may remove anything that wasn't backed up to Memories.

If you're so fed up that you're thinking of leaving Snapchat, a bad day of outages isn't a good reason to do it in a hurry. If you do decide to go, here's how to delete a Snapchat account, and it's worth saving anything you want to keep first.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Snapchat not working today?

The usual causes are a Snapchat outage, a weak internet connection, an out-of-date app or a stuck cache. Ask a friend to send you a snap and check Snapchat Support on X to see which cause applies.

Is Snapchat down right now?

Only a live check can tell you. Look at Snapchat Support on X, search for recent outage reports and ask friends on other networks whether they can send snaps.

How long do Snapchat outages usually last?

It varies. Small faults can clear quickly, while bigger ones take longer. Snapchat Support normally posts when it's fixed, so check there before you reinstall anything.

Will I lose my Memories if Snapchat is down?

An outage shouldn't delete your Memories, but don't uninstall the app or log out to test it if you're not sure they're backed up. Wait until the service is steady and check again.

Why can I use Wi-Fi for other apps but not Snapchat?

Some networks block or slow certain apps. Try mobile data, update Snapchat and clear its cache. If it works on data but not Wi-Fi, your router or network is the likely cause.
