How to See Old Instagram Stories You Posted

The short version: every Story you post is saved automatically to your private Archive unless you've switched that setting off, so you can see old Instagram Stories you posted by going to your profile, tapping the menu icon, and opening Archive. If a Story isn't there, it's either because archiving was turned off when you posted it, it was shared before Instagram added the feature in 2017, or you deleted it manually at the time.

Where your old Stories live

Instagram automatically archives every Story you post, and has done since late 2017. That archive sits in a different place to your main feed, which is exactly why so many people think their old Stories have vanished when they haven't. Here's the actual path:

  • Open Instagram and go to your own profile
  • Tap the three-line menu icon in the top right
  • Select "Your activity" or "Archive" (the exact wording depends on your app version)
  • Choose "Stories archive" from the dropdown at the top

You'll see every Story sorted by date, going back as far as you've had the archive setting switched on. Tap any one of them to view it full screen, exactly as it looked the day you posted it.

Checking your archive setting is on

This is the bit that trips people up. The archive only saves Stories posted while the setting is switched on, and plenty of people turn it off at some point without remembering, usually because they wanted to post something once and not have a permanent record of it. To check, go to Settings, then Privacy, then Story, and look for "Save to archive." If that toggle is off, nothing you post from now on will save, and nothing you posted while it was off ever did.

Say you run a small bakery account and posted daily behind-the-scenes Stories for most of 2024, but switched archiving off for three months that summer because you were testing a few promotional Stories you didn't want kept. When you go looking for those summer clips now, they simply won't be there. That's not a bug, it's the setting doing exactly what you told it to do.

Turning old Stories into something permanent: Highlights

The archive is private and only you can see it. If you want to show old Stories to your followers again, you need Highlights, which sit as circles just under your bio on your profile.

  1. Go to your profile and tap "New" under your bio, or the plus icon on an existing Highlight
  2. Instagram will show you everything in your archive
  3. Select the Stories you want, choose a cover image and a name, and save

Unlike regular Stories, Highlights don't expire after 24 hours. They stay on your profile until you remove them, which makes them useful for things like FAQs, testimonials, or a "start here" guide for new followers. If you're building out a content calendar around Stories, it's worth reading about how to share Memories on Instagram, since Memories and the Stories archive work from the same underlying data but surface it differently.

What to do when a Story isn't there

If you've confirmed archiving was on and the Story still doesn't appear, a few things could have happened:

  • You deleted it manually at some point, maybe months after posting, and forgot
  • It was posted before late 2017, when the archive feature didn't exist yet
  • Your account was deactivated or logged out of for a stretch, and Instagram's syncing had a gap
  • You're searching under a different Instagram account than the one you think you used

There's no official way to recover a Story that was never archived and has been deleted. Third-party "Instagram recovery" tools and browser extensions that promise to pull deleted Stories back are, almost without exception, either useless or a way to get your login credentials stolen. I'd avoid any site asking for your Instagram password outside the official app.

The part most guides skip: your audience can't see your archive, but they can still find traces

Here's something worth knowing if you've ever worried about old Stories resurfacing against your wishes. Even though your Stories archive is private, if someone screenshotted or screen-recorded your Story at the time, that copy exists completely outside Instagram's control, on their phone, possibly already reposted somewhere else. Instagram's own archive has nothing to do with that. If you've ever posted something in a moment of frustration and deleted it quickly, assume it may still exist somewhere you can't check. This matters more for business accounts than personal ones, because a Story meant as a quick joke to your close friends can end up being the thing a journalist or competitor screenshots months later. Worth factoring in before you post, not after.

It's a similar logic to hiding your online status on Instagram: the setting controls what Instagram shows, not what other people have already captured.

Using old Stories for business, not just nostalgia

If you post Stories for a brand or business account, your archive is a useful content library, not just a scrapbook. Pulling an old Story that performed well and reposting it, or turning three old product Stories into a single Highlight, costs you nothing and takes about five minutes. I'd recommend scrolling your archive once a quarter and pulling out anything that still holds up, rather than only ever creating new content from scratch.

If you're running paid Story ads rather than organic ones, the archive works differently again, and it's worth reading through how to create Instagram Story ad campaigns before assuming old organic Stories can simply be repurposed as ads, because they can't without rebuilding them in Ads Manager.

And if you've noticed your Story numbers dropping and you're digging through old Stories trying to work out why, that's a separate issue worth untangling on its own, covered in this piece on why Instagram Story views drop suddenly.

A quick worked example

Say you're helping a local gym rebrand its Instagram and want to show "then and now" progress using old client Stories from 18 months ago. You'd go to Archive, filter by scrolling to the date range, screenshot or save the relevant Stories, then rebuild them into a single Highlight called "Transformations." That takes maybe 20 minutes for a year and a half of content, assuming archiving was switched on the whole time, which for most accounts it is by default. If it wasn't, you're stuck relying on whatever you or the client happened to save manually, which is usually patchy at best.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Instagram Stories I posted years ago?

Yes, as long as the archive setting was switched on when you posted them. Go to your profile, open the menu icon, select Archive, then Stories archive, and scroll by date. The archive has existed since late 2017, so anything posted before that won't appear.

Why are some of my old Stories missing from the archive?

Usually because the "Save to archive" setting was turned off at the time, because you deleted the Story manually, or because it predates the archive feature. Check Settings, Privacy, Story to confirm the toggle is currently on.

Can other people see my Stories archive?

No, your archive is completely private and only visible to you. The only way someone else sees an old Story again is if you add it to a Highlight on your profile, which is public and permanent until you remove it.

Is there a way to recover a Story I deleted on purpose?

Not officially, and no, and third-party tools claiming to recover deleted Instagram content are not worth trusting with your login details. Treat deletion as final unless someone else saved a copy before you removed it.
