How to Check Your DMs on Instagram on Phone and Desktop

The short version: on your phone, tap the paper plane icon top right of the Instagram app to open DMs. On desktop, go to instagram.com, log in, and click the paper plane icon or messenger icon near your profile picture. Desktop DMs work but they're clunky compared to the app, and I'll tell you exactly where they fall short.

Checking Instagram DMs on your phone

This is the method 90% of people use, and it takes about three seconds once you know where to look.

  • Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android.
  • Look at the top right corner of your home feed. You'll see a paper plane (send) icon.
  • Tap it. This opens your full inbox, Primary and General tabs included.
  • Unread messages show a blue dot or bold text. Requests from people you don't follow sit in a separate "Requests" folder, tucked under the main inbox, easy to miss for weeks.

Here's the bit people skip: if you've got notifications switched off for Instagram, which a surprising number of business owners do to protect their focus, you won't get a badge count on the app icon. That means DMs sit unread for days. If you run a small shop account and customers message you to ask about stock, that delay costs you sales. Check the icon manually once a morning and once in the afternoon if you can't trust notifications.

Checking Instagram DMs on desktop

Instagram built desktop messaging a few years back, but it still isn't a full replacement for the app.

  • Go to instagram.com in any browser and log in.
  • Click your profile picture or the paper plane icon in the top navigation bar.
  • Your inbox opens in a panel on the left, with the conversation on the right, much like Facebook Messenger.
  • You can send texts, photos, and some reactions, but voice messages and disappearing photos/videos behave inconsistently depending on your browser.

Worked example: say you run a small online jewellery brand and you're sat at your desk answering customer emails. A customer DMs asking whether a ring is still in stock. You open instagram.com, reply in under a minute, and go straight back to email, no phone open up, no app switching. That's the real value of desktop DMs: speed when you're already at a computer, not a better feature set.

Where desktop falls short

Group video calls, Instagram Live replies, and some sticker reactions either don't appear or appear broken on desktop. If a DM contains a voice note, desktop sometimes shows it as a flat grey bar with no play button until you refresh. I'd never run a business entirely from desktop DMs for this reason. Use it for quick text replies, use your phone for anything with media attached.

What most guides won't tell you about message requests

Instagram hides message requests on purpose. If someone you don't follow DMs you, it doesn't show as a normal badge count on your main icon in the same obvious way. Many business accounts have had enquiries, sometimes paying customers, sitting unread in the Requests folder for months because nobody checks it. If you use Instagram for your business, check the Requests folder weekly, not just your main inbox. It's a separate tab and Instagram's design buries it.

Replying once you've found your DMs

Finding the message is half the job, replying is the other half. If you want the full breakdown of sending replies from either device, including attaching media and using quick replies for repeat questions, I've covered that step by step in replying to a DM on Instagram from a laptop or phone.

Managing DM volume without losing your mind

If your account has grown and DMs are piling up, a few practical fixes help more than any app hack:

  • Pin important conversations to the top so client enquiries don't get buried under meme replies.
  • Use the mute function on group chats that aren't urgent.
  • Set a personal rule: check DMs at two fixed times a day rather than every notification, which protects your focus and still keeps response times reasonable.

For content creators juggling Reels alongside DMs, the same discipline applies elsewhere. If you're also managing saved content, my guide on finding your saved Reels on Instagram walks through a similar "it's hidden but not lost" situation, and if you're repurposing video across platforms, downloading Instagram Reels to share elsewhere is worth a read too.

Troubleshooting common problems

If DMs aren't loading on your phone, force-close the app and reopen it. If that fails, log out and back in, this clears a surprising number of sync issues. On desktop, clearing your browser cache or switching from Safari to Chrome fixes the grey voice-note bug I mentioned earlier more often than Instagram's own help page admits. If messages still won't sync across devices, check that you're logged into the same account everywhere, people running a personal and business account often check the wrong one.

If you're thinking about stepping away from Instagram altogether, perhaps because DMs and notifications have become overwhelming, it's worth understanding the full picture first. My post on deactivating your Instagram account on phone and computer covers what happens to your messages and followers if you do.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see my Instagram DMs on desktop?

Usually it's a browser issue. Try clearing your cache, switching browsers, or logging out and back in. If you're using a work computer with restricted cookies, Instagram's messaging panel often fails to load at all.

Do Instagram DMs sync between phone and desktop?

Yes, as long as you're logged into the same account on both. Read receipts and typing indicators sync too, though voice messages and some stickers display inconsistently on desktop.

Where do messages from people I don't follow go?

They land in a separate Requests folder, not your main inbox. Instagram doesn't badge this prominently, so it's worth checking manually every week if you use the platform for business.

Can I check Instagram DMs without the app?

Yes, go to instagram.com on any browser, log in, and click the paper plane or messenger icon. It works for text and photos reliably, but video calls and some media types work better in the app.
