Do Messages Disappear When You Block Someone on Instagram?

No. When you block someone on Instagram, the chat history usually stays in your inbox, but neither of you can send new messages in it. The old messages don't vanish on their own, so if you want them gone you'll need to delete the chat or unsend your own messages. App menus change between versions, so treat this as a guide and check the app if something looks different.

Blocking is the strongest privacy tool Instagram gives you, so it's natural to wonder whether it wipes the slate clean. It doesn't. What it does is draw a line under the conversation: nothing new can get through, and everything already sent stays where it was. Instagram can change how this works at any time, so I've hedged the details below where it matters.

Plenty of people block someone and then find the old chat still sitting at the top of their inbox. That's normal, and it catches a lot of people out. Here's what blocking does, what it leaves alone, and how to clear the messages if that's what you want.

What changes when you block someone

  • They can't send you new direct messages, either in the existing chat or by starting a fresh one from that account.
  • You can't message them either, unless you unblock them first.
  • Your profile, posts and stories stop appearing to them, and theirs stop appearing to you.
  • Their old likes and comments on your posts generally stop showing on your profile.
  • They don't get a notification telling them you blocked them.
  • The old chat usually stays in your inbox, so you can still scroll back through what was said.

The last point is the one people get wrong. Blocking cuts the connection going forward. It doesn't reach back and delete the history.

What the blocked person sees

Instagram doesn't announce a block, so they won't get a message or alert. They'll usually spot it themselves: your profile no longer shows up when they search, or a message they try to send won't go through.

On their side, the earlier messages generally remain in their inbox too. Your name or picture in that chat may look different from before, and in some versions the thread shows a generic label instead of your username. The exact wording and look vary by app version, so I wouldn't rely on any one sign as proof of a block.

Messages you sent before the block can still be read by them if they open the old chat. That matters if you sent something you'd rather take back, and I'll cover that in a moment.

Block, restrict or mute: which one fits?

Blocking is a big step. If you only want some distance, Instagram has gentler options. This table shows the difference in plain terms.

OptionCan they message you? What happens to old chatsDo they know?
BlockNo new messages either wayThe chat usually stays visible in your inboxNot told, but they may notice
RestrictTheir new messages go to your message requestsOld chats stay; they can't see when you're active or whether you've read thingsNot told
MuteYes, messages still arriveChats stay as they are; you just stop getting alertsNot told

If your goal is simply to stop someone seeing your posts, you may not need a block at all. I've written about how to remove followers on Instagram without blocking them, which is a quieter way to do it.

If you want the messages gone

Because blocking leaves the chat alone, clearing messages is a separate job. There are two different things you can do, and they don't do the same thing.

Delete the chat for you

  1. Open your inbox from the messages icon.
  2. Press and hold the chat, or swipe on it in some versions.
  3. Choose the option to delete the chat and confirm.

This clears it from your side only. The other person's copy isn't touched, so they can still see the conversation if they open it.

Unsend your own messages

  1. Open the chat.
  2. Press and hold one of your own messages.
  3. Tap Unsend.

This removes the message for both of you, but only messages you sent. You can't unsend theirs. If you plan to block someone and you want your own messages pulled back, it's wise to do the unsending first, because after a block you may not be able to reach the chat in the same way.

If a menu name looks different on your phone, open the app's settings or the chat options and search for the word delete or unsend. For a fuller walk-through, see my guide to deleting old Instagram direct messages.

After you unblock

Unblocking doesn't rewind everything. In most cases the old chat is still there and you can message each other again, though a new message from someone you don't follow may arrive as a message request instead of landing in your main inbox.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

You also won't automatically follow each other again. If you followed them before, you'll need to follow again, and they'll need to do the same. If either account was private, the approval step comes back too.

Think twice before unblocking someone who made you uncomfortable. It's your account and your call, and there's no rule that you need to give anyone a second chance.

Safety notes if the block is about harassment

If someone is bothering you, block them and use the report option in the chat or on their profile. If you might want a record, save screenshots of the messages before you delete anything, because deleting a chat on your side can make it harder to find later.

Instagram also has an option, in the block screen, to block new accounts that person might create. Menu names move around, so search your settings for the word block if you can't find it.

If the real problem is strangers filling your inbox rather than one person, blocking each account is slow. Have a look at how to stop message requests on Instagram instead, which deals with the whole stream at once.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking someone delete the chat on Instagram?

No. Blocking stops new messages in both directions, but the old chat usually stays in your inbox. To remove it from your side, delete the chat yourself.

Can a blocked person still see my old messages?

In most cases yes. The earlier messages generally stay in their inbox too. If you want them gone for both of you, unsend your own messages before you block.

Will they know I blocked them?

Instagram doesn't send them a notification. They may work it out if your profile no longer appears in search or their messages won't send.

Do messages come back if I unblock someone?

The old chat is usually still there after you unblock, and you can message each other again. You'll both need to follow each other again if you want that connection back.

What's the difference between blocking and restricting?

Blocking cuts off new messages and hides profiles both ways. Restricting is quieter: their messages go to your requests and they can't see when you're active, but they aren't cut off completely.
